Oh wow! The 'tree swinging' thingy seems to have become the hot topic of discussion "in full swing" 😆 One of my favourite songs picturized on DA, where the swinging is absolutely justified is 'haaye haaye haaye yeh nigaahen' in 'Paying Guest'. Very well put-together piece of dance and song sequence.

But, if you really must see someone, who can emote well without having to do much - so much so, that just one look, one smile and one word from that guy is enough - is Sunil Dutt of the 1950s and 1960s. You should see the way he looks at Nutan in 'Sujata', when that song 'Tum jeeyo hazaaron saal' is on. N is sitting quietly, all alone, lost in her thoughts and pensive. And then our man walks up behind her and looks at her. Oh! My God! I still have weak knees when I see that.

And Sunil Dutt in 'Chaya' is unforgettable. What's more? The name of the character played by Asha Parekh is the same as *cough cough* 😳 Each time he says "Sarita" in that movie, my heart skipped a zillion and a half beats. And that song "itna na mujhse tu pyaar badha"... well the "jal ki dhara" bit is also supposed to be for your's truly's name 😳😳😳

Till recently he was my knight in shining armour. Now of course that post is taken up by someone else 😆

Thanks for the wonderful article and songs Adimoshai!! I always associate Kishorda with Dev saab. There is one song though from Bombay Ka Babu..... Chal Ri Sajni Aab Kya Soche.... its by Mukesh and its in the background but with that song always Devsaab's pic. comes to my mind! 😊

If you go by the songs of 50's,early 60's, there was way too much melody in them, and if one broke into an excercise routine like in the 80's ( jeetendra- sridevi), (Govinda-neelam)etc, or todays kind of absurd techno savvy dance routine..it would kill the mood of the song outright. Somehow walking on the roads, smiling coyly, pulling out a strand of grass, and playing with it when sitting in a park and singing, or imagining a sequence while travelling, or gazing into each others eys around the tree, made it look more authentic, more natural.

Bang on Adi.

I recollect some old movies where often they would show two flowers come together face up ... and as a growing teenager, I have had my share of rants and raves on censorship and how stupid this seemed.....

But one kissing sequence in Dhoom 2 made me convinced that two flowers coming together, or two feet moving in sensuous rhythm or the gentle shaking of the hands, or even the hiding of the face behind the dupatta of the heroine made the heart skip a beat in anticipation or made us go dreamy eyed with the anticipation or promise of romance than the cold blooded action.

The song in Paying Guest - Chod do Aanchal Zamana kya kahega... had some real "tender" moments with Dev Anand and Nutan, with huge leaves meetings, feet playing... the romance was visible ...

The song from Tere Ghar ke Saamne - the title song, where Dev Saab imagines Nutan in a glass of whisky chiding him for drinking was tender love at its most sensitive best.... and the soulful "Sun le tu dil ki sazaa, pyaar se pyaar sajaa".... all Dev Saab did was to wear his suit, look dapper and suave and handsoem and irresistable ... and gaze at Nutan, almost pleading with his eyes, asking her to take that final step.... oh... what romance... the heart sings out

You are absolutely correct priya, the feelings which comes with looking into the eyes or sharma ke bhag jana, mooh chhupana are more superior than kissing and silly dancing which is shown in the movies now a days.

Coming back to Dev saheb, I like the song from Kala Bazar- khoya khoya chand, his hand movements and simply running around in a beautiful moonlight is just perfect.

Well?! 🤢 Aap kyaa jaano adrak kaa swaad 😛😉 Hmm... coming to think of it, interesting to equate SD with 'adrak'. 😳 But on a serious level, SD was at a different level from DA. I don't like DA any less though. He had his talent too. Just that, for serious roles and roles that required some subtle handling of emotions, SD was really good. And now roll your eyes and throw up your hands all you want!! 😉

Actually Sarita, to each his own, is all I would like to say here.

I do like Sunil Dutt Saab, he had his finer moments too, and he was quite different from Dev Anand. Each had their niche, their area of strengths and weaknesses. The same SD who had mesmerising eyes in Sujatha or Chayya also played a bumbling fool in Padosan... where he did go over the top.. But then, thats what was expected of him from the script...

No one is lesser than the other, and all are fabulous actors in their own right.

Maybe we should not get too carried away with our dislikes..... to compare fine artistes with tree swingers
, that was his style and that style was loved by many.

Well, I never liked Sunil Dutt but in Sujata he was just brilliant. I never considered Rajesh Khanna to be a serious actor but in Anand he made me cry. I never thought Jitendra could act maturely until I saw him in Parichay.... And what do you think is common to all this...... well...Sunil Dutt here was directed by Bimal Roy, Rajesh Khanna by Hrishida and Jitendra by Gulzar... the greatest directors of any era. So I guess it takes a good director to bring out the best of any actor.
