And what do you think is common to all this...... well...Sunil Dutt here was directed by Bimal Roy, Rajesh Khanna by Hrishida and Jitendra by Gulzar... the greatest directors of any era. So I guess it takes a good director to bring out the best of any actor.

👏👏👏 well put.... and sometimes, we fall in love with the characterisation than the actual man behind the character.

Oh no Priya, I don't at all dislike DA. Quite the contrary. Don't get me wrong and like I said in my earlier post, the 'tree-swinging' bit was more by way of a side-remark on a lighter vein, which was taken by many as just that.

Like you rightly pointed, each actor had carved a niche for himself. And like Salil-ji pointed out, it's the director's hand that finally moulds the actor to fit the character in that role. I just feel that DA had more potential and more could have been brought out by directors, like they did in the case of Sunil Dutt (in at least 3 or 4 movies), Dilip Kumar, Ashok Kumar or to move a little ahead in the era, even Amitabh and Shashi Kapoor. Sometimes an actor gets type-cast, for whatever reasons. D.A. fitted the bill of a suave, well-dressed and well-groomed gentleman. And of course that of a lover boy. He didn't choose to go for more versatile roles - except in movies like 'Jaal' and there's one more movie with Nalini Jaiwant (where the song 'ik pal ruk jana ho... jaane waale raahi" is picturised). I just wish we could've had more of these varied roles.

But then, some of the best songs in Hindi cinema are also picturized on Dev Anand. And not many actors can claim to have churned out as many hits as he. Each to his / her own though ... 😊

Actually Sarita, to each his own, is all I would like to say here.

I do like Sunil Dutt Saab, he had his finer moments too, and he was quite different from Dev Anand. Each had their niche, their area of strengths and weaknesses. The same SD who had mesmerising eyes in Sujatha or Chayya also played a bumbling fool in Padosan... where he did go over the top.. But then, thats what was expected of him from the script...

No one is lesser than the other, and all are fabulous actors in their own right.

Maybe we should not get too carried away with our dislikes..... to compare fine artistes with tree swingers
, that was his style and that style was loved by many.

Yes, both Rafi and Kishore sounded good for Dev Anand. But I didn't like it when MDs used Kishore and Rafi on an actor in the same movie. It is unrealistic to expect a man to sing in two completely different voices. I guess the MDs did not care much about realism.

On the subject of Dev Anand's mannerisms, I don't think Sarita expressed dislike for him at all! If at all, one can only express repugnance about his later movies when he wore a wig. His gait was definitely peculiar, no one could miss it..I think it was a physical defect, but that doesn't take away the fact that he suited all the roles he played perfectly, especially under the superb direction of Vijay Anand (incidentally, I regard Vijay Anand as the man responsible for Dev's success. Without Vijay Anand, Dev might not have reached the heights of success)

Sahana and Sarita, I guess we are all being over cautious these days with comments. Personally, either as a fan or a member or even a moderator, I see nothing wrong with the tree swinging comment, but there are many who may not, many who may not like comparisons to tree swingers or ancestors, my reply was merely to keep the discussion on track, lest another fine topic goes awry.

I don't like DA any less though. He had his talent too. Just that, for serious roles and roles that required some subtle handling of emotions, SD was really good. And now roll your eyes and throw up your hands all you want!! 😉

Hey CB, try to get the following movies of our fave adrak:
Ek Phool Chaar Kaante (Sunil Dutt is absolutely adorable in this first rate movie)
Chhaya
Sujata
Railway Platform (don't know which is better, the movie or the actor)
Mujhe Jeene Do
Sadhana
Chiraag

You might forget Padosan then! 😃

Sorry for deviating from the topic Adi!

Sahana and Rahul, can we please stick to topic. Maybe we can just open another topic on Sunil Dutt, I would love to participate in them.... with addition of movies like Reshma Shera, Milan, Jaani Dushman, Mera Saaya, Dard ka rishta etc.

For now, it is Dev Anand wooing Asha Parekh with the "teri zulfon se judaai toh nahi maangi thi, quaid maangi thi, rihaae toh nahi maangi thi"

The lyrics are so simple, so beautiful, and so so so meaningful. Rafi and Dev Anand in this song is a combination that just melts my heart..... And that was the beauty of many a Dev Anand song.... he in a suit, standing quietly and a song on his lips. The eyes and words did the talking...

There are 100s of Dev Anand songs I adore but let me mention the song "Din dhal jaaye" in Guide. It is so well picturised that one feels like crying along with Dev and Waheeda. The last scene in that song remains in my mind with Waheeda quietly listening to the song from the staircase, looking into space while Dev sings with glass in hand. And the haunting line "tu mujhse main dil se pareshaan, dono hain majboor, aise mein kisko kaun manaaye" - these are moments that lead one to call those times the Golden Era of Hindi films. Of course all the songs in Guide are gems of picturisation, lyrics and music. It's as if some magical hand has created such beauty.

SDB, Mohd. Rafi and Dev Anand were such an irresistible combination, isnt it, Sahana. I agree, that song moves me to tears everytime I hear it or see it.

Madan Mohan, Rafi and DA combination in the movie 'Baarish' is also lovely. Two songs from this movie come to my mind. 'Mujhe le chal'. 'Saawan ke mahine mein' and 'Kabhi na kabhi, koi na koi to aayega'. All were wonderful, but I consider the former nothing less than brilliant!
