Oh no Priya, I don't at all dislike DA. Quite the contrary. Don't get me wrong and like I said in my earlier post, the 'tree-swinging' bit was more by way of a side-remark on a lighter vein, which was taken by many as just that.
Like you rightly pointed, each actor had carved a niche for himself. And like Salil-ji pointed out, it's the director's hand that finally moulds the actor to fit the character in that role. I just feel that DA had more potential and more could have been brought out by directors, like they did in the case of Sunil Dutt (in at least 3 or 4 movies), Dilip Kumar, Ashok Kumar or to move a little ahead in the era, even Amitabh and Shashi Kapoor. Sometimes an actor gets type-cast, for whatever reasons. D.A. fitted the bill of a suave, well-dressed and well-groomed gentleman. And of course that of a lover boy. He didn't choose to go for more versatile roles - except in movies like 'Jaal' and there's one more movie with Nalini Jaiwant (where the song 'ik pal ruk jana ho... jaane waale raahi" is picturised). I just wish we could've had more of these varied roles.
But then, some of the best songs in Hindi cinema are also picturized on Dev Anand. And not many actors can claim to have churned out as many hits as he. Each to his / her own though ... 😊

Actually Sarita, to each his own, is all I would like to say here.
I do like Sunil Dutt Saab, he had his finer moments too, and he was quite different from Dev Anand. Each had their niche, their area of strengths and weaknesses. The same SD who had mesmerising eyes in Sujatha or Chayya also played a bumbling fool in Padosan... where he did go over the top.. But then, thats what was expected of him from the script...
No one is lesser than the other, and all are fabulous actors in their own right.
Maybe we should not get too carried away with our dislikes..... to compare fine artistes with tree swingers
, that was his style and that style was loved by many.
