The scenario I have dreaded for 4 months has finally arrived. Come next Friday 7.30pm, I will no longer turn on the TV, tune in to Zee and eagerly await Sameer's entry.
The journey began with "O maajhi re"...he won me over with singing style, voice quality, melodic line. At that time I had no clue about his xfactor and other qualities. Then week after week, he made me run through the entire gamut of emotions, laugh with "On the roof in the rain", cry with "Tujhse Naaraz", rock with "Kyun aaj kal", catch my breath with "Chaand Chupa", and marvel at the synergy with HR's music. I cannot bear to think of another week without this little powerhouse.
How an 11 year old can have this effect on me, a mid career professional, I do not know. Yes, his smile, expressions, body language, looks, charisma/stage presence, dancing all added to the effect of his singing. But I have a feeling it goes deeper than that. What bowled me over was his confidence, positive never-say-die attitude, and his sheer joy in performing on the stage.
All good things come to an end. Today, I called my cable company and cancelled my Zee subscription. I would have done that a long time ago, I had hung on just for Sameer's sake. I will keep coming to IF though, and posting once in a while. Though I doubt I could ever support anyone with the same passion.
I can live without Zee, but not without the wonderful folks on IF, especially the dedicated fan club. Ron, I could always count on to crack a joke and lift my spirits; Snowflake and CKY, always ready to take up cudgels on behalf of our cutie pie; Kusum, the most balanced fan I have ever met; Sylvester, Aragon the whole gang; excuse me if I can't remember your names off the top of my head, it doesn't mean your support was any less valuable.
I know a lot of us are hurting inside at the final result even if we don't show it. But we all have faced ups and downs in life, and I know that those who stick by good times and bad, are the ones that make life woth living.
I would like to dedicate this Elton John stanza to you, and of course our little champ
Keep smiling, keep shining
Knowing you can always count on me, for sure
That's what friends are for
For good times and bad times
I'll be on your side forever more
That's what friends are for
