'My songs are targeted at 23-year olds'

Subhash K Jha | January 16, 2006 15:36 IST

For a man who virtually came in from the cold, Himesh Reshammiya's career in 2005 was a rocking roster of chartbusters.

"I don't know how it happened," he says, modestly. "But the journey has been exciting, especially in the last year when the big banners suddenly woke up to me."

Earlier, Reshammiya was one of the also-rans, waiting at the fringes of the charts where Anu Malik, Jatin-Lalit and Shankar-Ehsan-Loy ruled. Tere Naam (2004) was a turning point. "I owe that score and a lot of the other things I compose to Laxmikant-Pyarelal. They are my idols. Unfortunately, that is not what today's average listener wants to hear. I realised that when Just Chill and Aashiq Banaya Aapne hit the charts."

Aashiq Banaya, with Reshammiya handling the nasal sufi vocals himself, was the biggest single of 2005. "It really became big... yes, bigger than I thought it would. It is being played at every pub and party. I'm flattered. The good innings that began with Aitraaz last year really grew this year. But I realise the profile of music listeners has changed considerably. Today, the average listener is 23 years old, and he downloads music. My songs have to be targeted at that group. That's the only way a film score can work."

Hence, the sufi-rock sounds of Aashiq Banaya Aapne. One hears a similar tune in Anant Mahadevan's Aksar. "Yes, I realise that. But I'm not going to pursue that sound this year. I like to create a sound, and then leave it behind. This year, you'll hear a different sound from me in Abbas-Mustan's 36 China Town, Satish Kaushik's Shaadi Se Pehle, Priyadarshan's Phir Hera Pheri, Anil Sharma'a Apne and Dharmesh Darshan's Aap Ki Khatir."

Dharmesh is a significant Reshammiya convert. So far, both Darshan brothers -- Suneel and Dharmesh -- have sworn by the sounds of Nadeem-Shravam. Nadeem had done such chartbusters as Raja Hindustani and Dhadkan for Dharmesh's cinema. Several filmmakers like David Dhawan, who swore by Anu Malik's sounds, have also made a sly switch to Reshammiya. The composer shrugs off the melodist's mantle. "I'm not here to displace anyone. I'd be happy just doing my work. My time has been divided between composing for around six-seven assignments and serving as a judge on the music contest Sa Re Ga Ma Pa."

He is extremely pleased with the quality of singing he has heard on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. "One of the contestants, Vinit Singh, has already sung for me in Rocky. I definitely plan to use other voices, like Himani Kapoor, who is outstanding. We're a nation of singers. Not all Indians watch films, but do you know anyone who doesn't listen to Lataji, Ashaji, Mohd Rafi or Kishore Kumar?"

Himesh to Shoot Rs 4 crore Promo in Switzerland
document.write('Fraidoon Shahryar, ')Fraidoon Shahryar, IndiaGlitz [Friday, October 13, 2006]

Himesh Reshammiya recently organized a press conference where he urged the media to come along with him to London to witness 'Aapka Suroor Live in Concert' at Wembley Stadium in London on 29th October. He repeatedly said that he is going to make a "big announcement" there. When the media personnel enquired that if he is acting in a Rs 100 crore budget film, he kept on denying. Like a true media savvy product, he hyped his Wembley concert announcement.

According to a source very close to Himesh, he is actually going to be starring in a big budget movie. In fact he is going to Switzerland to shoot a promo of the film, even before it has begun its shooting. And hold your breath…The budget of shooting this promo is a whopping Rs 4 crore. This will leave Sajid Nadiadwala red-n-blue for he had hyped his Rs 40 lakh 'Jaaneman' promo. But all that happened once the film was complete. Himesh seems to have gone on an altogether different level. The source also added that he is charging Rs 60 lakhs per show, which is a colossal amount in itself.

You heard it first on IndiaGlitz about Rs 4 crore promo of Himesh Reshammiya's debut as an actor in a huge production.

Himesh chickens out
By: Jhanvi Shah
October 14, 2006

Himesh Reshammiya at Sahar International Airport Amitabh Bachchan
They were all set to create showbiz history together. Amitabh Bachchan and self-proclaimed rock star Himesh Reshammiya were supposed to shoot a music video for the song Mehbooba O mehbooba in Ram Gopal Varma's Sholay. But now Reshammiya and Bachchan will not be doing the song together.

No jugalbandi

The official reason from Himesh's camp is, "Himesh was very keen to do the music video with Amitji, and had even recorded the track.

But the dates for shooting the music video clashed with the dates for the rehearsals of his concerts at Wembley (England) at the end of this month. That's when Ramu changed the song to a female solo sung by Asha Bhonsle, which will be picturised on Urmila Matondkar alone. Earlier it was to be filmed with Himesh too, who had done a marvellous job of imitating R D Burman's timbre from the original song."

Darr gaya

But Ramu's camp has a different story to tell. According to a production source, Himesh didn't want to share the platform with Bachchan.

"He may be a star in his own right, but when it comes to the Big B, Himesh is completely dwarfed. That's why Himesh has been going around claiming that he opted out of the video because of his Wembley concerts. In reality, Himesh was too intimidated by AB's presence to want to share the stage with him."

That's not true

However, sources close to Himesh label this talk as attempts by Ramu's camp to bury the real reason. A source close to Reshammiya says, "Why would Himesh not want to work with Amitabh Bachchan? It is ridiculous that people are talking about him chickening out or being insecure about getting upstaged.

In fact, Himesh was even more excited about Mehbooba than Ramu. He worked very hard on the song and was thrilled that it would be picturised on him, Mr Bachchan and Urmila. However, things didn't work out because Ramu wasn't adjusting dates between him and Mr Bachchan. Ramu is responsible for Himesh falling out of the song."

Himesh, for his part, says, "The music video never happened because the dates couldn't be worked out. Beyond that, I don't want to comment anymore."

Now Himesh Reshammiya School Of Music
By MIO Team
Oct 10, 2006, 08:12

This is the name of the music school that Himesh Reshammiya intends to open all across the country. Himesh has already changed the face of music industry and this is his attempt to change the face of music in the country. He has plans to open music schools and make music accessible to the young and old.

His school will have amateur and the professional musician in an equal place. Telling more about it Himesh says, "I'm opening a hi-tech music school to be called Himesh Reshammiya School Of Music all over the country, starting from Mumbai, Delhi, Madras and Kolkata. There will be two centers in each town. It's a very huge project.

Italian architects have being roped in for their expertise for the interiors. I want to change the face of music schools in this country. With my school I intend to do away with make the process of music learning friendly rather than forbidding. The important thing is to get people interested in music as a career option. The students could range from six to 60, but the bottom line is that I want music to be made both fun and meditative. I want this school to become like shopping mall or a multiplex where people can relax."

Not only this he also has plans to open schools outside India. "In Phase 2 we will take it to the non-metro centers. I intend developing a syllabus, which incorporates different genres of music. My school will endeavor to bring forth the best talent to the film industry. I want to bridge the gap between trained classic musicians and popular cinema. Whatever I've gained from music I want to pass on to the young generations. I had such little guidance when I was starting out. Now I want youngsters to get the opportunities I didn't."

Himesh is truly in his way to become a legend!

By Subhash K. Jha

Mumbai, Aug 29 - Composer-singer Himesh Reshammiya's first American tour, Aapka Suroor, is a resounding success and he is on cloud nine.

'Anything I say will seem like self-projection. You have to be here in the US to know what I'm experiencing. I can't believe I connect so well with the crowds. This one-on-one with a live audience has been the best experience of my career so far,' Himesh told IANS from the US.

The first of the 18-city concerts in Atlanta was held on July 28 and it was an unqualified sell-out. Over 7,000 people attended the concert. And it's been the same story everywhere.

In fact, it has surpassed the last successful Bollywood concert, Temptations, in Atlanta, which was attended by approximately 4,000 people.

Organiser Vijay Tarneja of Elite Entertainment, who last organised Temptations concert for Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta, and Rani Mukerji, discloses that tickets for venues in New Jersey and Miami have already been sold out. Toronto, where Reshammiya and troupe are expected to perform later, wants an encore concert even before the first one has been held.

'I've been organising Bollywood concerts for 15 years. I've never before seen such mass hysteria at any Indian concert. We've started calling Reshammiya the Music God. He generates a collective frenzy that I've never seen before,' said Tarneja.

Tarneja puts Reshammiya's Aapka Suroor Live concerts above the Temptations concerts in terms of audience participation. He sees this as a revival of fortune for Bollywood concerts abroad.

'There has been a slump of late. But this concert proves that the right packaging and right artist can still pack in the audience. Maybe they were just bored of seeing the same thing. Agreed Reshammiya isn't a film star. But he's as visible on the home medium as any Bollywood star.'

Zee TV's 'Hero Hondo Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' finalist Himani Kapoor, who accompanies Himesh on his US tour, is speechless.

'I've never imagined anything like this. For about two hours Himesh-ji just captured the audience. He sang all their favourites live, and they went mad. They jumped on the seats, danced in the aisles, clapped and whistled until the very end. Himesh-ji is India's first true rock star.'

The man at the centre of the frenzy tries hard to be modest.

'This is my first direct connectivity with an American audience. Their response is far beyond anything I had imagined. I'm very proud of what I've achieved. But what really makes me proud is when people tell me I've revived the music industry and now, Bollywood concerts abroad.'
