Hello Salilu,

Your topic encouraged me to contribut here. I know couple of MDs that are not known to many due to various reasons. My first MD is Chick Chocolate. He was an assistant to few famous MDs such as C.Ramchandra and Shaker Jaikishan. He composed music to 3 songs that I know. Here is the list.

01) Aa teri tasveer banaaloo (Talat in Movie Nadan under the umbrella of Shankar Jaikishan)
02) Koyee Dard hamaaraa kyaa samajhe (Lata in Rangeelaa)
03) Kahate hai pyaar kisako panchee (Lata/Chittalka in movie Baarish under C.Ramchandra)

My second MD is Dattaa Davjekar who was a very famous MD in Marathi film industry. He gave music to only one Hindi movie named "Aapkee Sewaame. His compositions were mostly classically based. There are two songs one by Lata and the other by Mohan Tara and Rafi

My 3rd MD is Keshavrao Bhole who gave music to a very old movie named Amrit Manthan. 2 songs both sung by Shanta Apte.

Sudheer Phadke was by no means a B grade composer. He gave music to numersous Marathi movies and every one of them was a tremendous hit. He gave music to Bhabhiki Chudiyaa and 6 more movies in Hindi. There are other less known Marathi MDs such as Kishori AmoNkar.

If you go to giitaayan and look under Music Directors, there are 100s MDs that are totally unknown.

Govind Kaka,

Thanks for your post. I know all the MDs you listed though I do not know all the songs in your list.

Regarding Sudhir Phadke -- being a Maharashatrian and an ardent fan of Marathi film/non-film music, I know Sudhir Phadke and his capabilities as MD very well. He is lesser known (to non-Marathi Hindi film music lovers) and not less capable. In fact this thread is not about B grade or less capable MDs. It is about lesser known MDs. For example, I consider Kanu Roy to be a great MD, A grade, but he is lesser known to Hindi film music lovers. I think some people did talk about B grade movies but I do not recall anyone calling any MD as B grade but I may be wrong.

Salilu,

Thanks for clarifying. I always read your posts. They are thoght provoking and address to serious music enthusiasts. I am a Nihira Joshi fan and took liberty to put your name in her fan list. If do not like it I am sorry. I am a great fan of Music as a whole. I collected many rare Hindi movie songs and now can boast of having at least 4000 old Hindi Songs as well as vocal classical and instrumental classical collection. Did you know Pritviraj kapoor used to sing too? I have only one of his song.

Govind ji, thats a nice list that you've provided to us here. Just wanted to clarify that we are not suggesting that these are B-grade composers. Its just that some less known MDs (in Hindi Film Music) have composed some very popular songs and we listen to/hum those songs all the time without realizing who the composer is.
This thread by salilu ji is just to bring those names to everyone's attention...

Salilu ji,
I did talk about a movie but classified it as C-grade 😆. There's another one that might fit the bill - The Adventures of Robin Hood. Again a "lousy" movie (C-grade) but had an all time classic by Rafi that I had uploaded some time ago - "maana mere haseen sanam, tu rashke maahtaab hai".

Corvallis ji,
In this thread, we're talking about MDs who're not talked about as much as others just because they had small banners and their movies didn't fare as well at the box office. Please dont take it as an insult to any of these composers...

Talking about superhit songs from B/C grade movies, I always remember Parasmani (Mahipal/Geetanjali) that I saw when I was a little kid. This movie was full of magic and photographic tricks so I enjoyed it then. This movies had some songs composed by the then unknown MD which became superhit

Hasta Hua Noorani Chehra -- Lata

Woh Jab Yaad Aaye Bahut Yaad Aaye - Lata/Rafi

The MD then became very well known -- Laxmikant Pyarelal. It was only their 2nd movie.

Just for information, AAp Ki Sewamein was the first film for Lataji. She was introduced to the hindi film music in this film. It might be fate that the man responsible - Datta Davjekar - gave music to the only hindi film.
