There haven't been many interesting discussions going on currently so I thought of starting this thread on a topic that I never saw on this forum. It is about the lesser known music composers of golden era. Let's discuss your favorite songs by these "lesser known" music composers.

So whom do I categorize into "lesser known" composers of golden era? Composers who gave music in late 50s, 60s, 70s, and early 80s, who did not achieve the the name and fame of the well known composers of their era for various reasons. These composers gave music to either few good movies or to many but mostly B grade and unknown movies. They were never associated with big banners, etc. But they came out with few but very good songs that became very popular. So much so that we get surprised to know that the song is composed by a relatively unknown name.

So my list of "lesser known" composers will include all except ---

Naushad, C Ramchandra, SD Burman, Madan Mohan, Roshan, Shankar-Jaikishan, Hemant Kumar, Khaiyyam, OP Nayyar, Salil Chaudhary, Kalyanji-Ananji, RD Burman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

And for discussion, I would also like to exclude --

1. Composers of 40s and early 50s like Sardar Malik, Anil Biswas, Sajjad Hussain
2. Composers who were leading singers but dabbled into music composition-- Kishore Kumar, Mukesh
3. Composers whose main focus always was/is classical vocal/instrumnetal -- Ravi Shankar, Shiv-Hari, Zakir Hussain
4. Composers who got many opportunities to work with big name banners - Usha Khanna, Vasant Desai, Ravi, Jaidev
5. Composers who started in mid 70s and beyond-- Bappi Lahiri, Ravindra Jain, Rajesh Roshan

So here I start with my list of the favorite songs of the "lesser known" composers----

I was about to start with Shyam Sundar, Bulo C Rani, Khemchand Prakash, Husnalal Bhagatram and Master Ghulam Haider but they're pretty much "disqualified" (40's and 50's).

- Ghulam Mohammad
- Lachiram
- N Dutta
- Hansraj Behl
- C Arjun
- Pt SD Batish
- Daan Singh
- Iqbal Qureshi

There are a couple of others like Robin Chatterjee, Bhola Shreshtha (Poornima/Sushma Shreshtha's dad), Jag Phool Kaushik, Nashaad but I've only heard a couple of songs composed by them so cant write much...

Very good topic Salilji.

One point Sudhir Phadake was not known for Hindi songs but He is famous for marathi songs. He is famous for Marathi light songs (Bhavgeet )

Sudhir Phadke was heart of Marathi light music. He went on to become one of the most popular singers and music directors of all time in Marathi cinema. He acquired his primary tutelage in vocal classical music from the late Vamanrao Padhye in Kolhapur. After beginning his career with HMV in 1941, he joined the Prabhat Film Company as music director in 1946.

He had 111 films to his credit as a music director, 21 of which are in Hindi. Phadke last sang and composed music for the Hindi film Veer Savarkar in 2002.For the last one decade, he was tenaciously involved in a unique project of producing a film on the life of freedom fighter Veer Savarkar through public donations only. He was the main inspiration and founder member of India Heritage Foundation in the United States.

He had also scored the music for Apradhi, Jai Bhim, Maya Bazar, Ram Pratigya, Sant Janabai, Seeta Swayamwar, Aage Badho, Gokul and Rukmini Swayamwar among others.

Winner of numerous awards, Phadke won the [[Rashtrapati Award]] in 1963 for Ha Maaza Marga Ekala. The highlight of his career, however, is the music composition of the Geet Ramayana, rendered in lyrical form by poet G D Madgulkar.

Thanks JuggyE. Ghulam Mohmmed, assistant to Naushad, is really an unknown name. But he made a name for himself with his outsanding score of Pakeeza. All of the songs were composed by him. He passed away before the film was completed and then Naushad finished the film with backgroud score and added 3 more songs (kaun gali gayo shyam - thumari by Parveen Sultana, Nazariya ki mari by Rajkumari and Mora Sajan by Vani Jairam). Unfortunately I see in many places the entire credit for Pakeeza is given to Naushad.

C Arjun is of course known for his super hit Jai Santoshi Maa songs. He gave music to quite a few social movies and I know he has given popular songs but I can't seem to recall. He is the one who used Usha Mangeshkar for quite a few hindi songs.

N Dutta has also gave few popular songs that I can't recall.
