Actually, the judges are also playing favourites and not always judging by sur.
For example: Neha was eliminated before Protik even though she did much better acc. to the aggregate of the grades.
Diwakar was often given a B+ by Alka even though at times he did not deserve that low a grade. However, Armaan would CLEARLY go off sur but get an A+ because of "his age"!
In the Kolkata auditions, Abhijit picked an 8 year old girl who was very cute, but didn't sing so much in sur over other better candidates. Alka and Bappi later eliminated her.
The judges are also human and sometimes end up making judgements based on personality.
Very good points T - the judges have played to other factors, and we have seen that earlier with EMAET too - the veto power was used on SI when the judges felt that a particular region would not have voted for them due to a certain incident there. The veto power was ultimately wasted and SI were eliminated soon after.
I think judges play to emotions at times and so do the public. Hence we need a balance.
Judges are much better ofd on deciding on the musical factors agreed, but ultimately if the program aims at churning out playback singers, the audience involvement is very important. It is to these audience that the winning contestant has to play. So let them also have a say in who they want to listen too.
And again, if audience are somewhat a part of the decision making process, the chances of their getting involved are much higher and hence they would like to contribute to the singers album more enthusiastically when it comes out. After all, it was them who were a part of making this person a singer - human psychology!
But yes, dont leave it entirely to the naive audience - let the 50% weightage of the judes opinion be the correcting and balancing factor to decide the most deserving as well as popular winner
