But, isn't the cost of suing end-users too high at the moment because there are so many of them?

I mean, MS obviously has the money to protect itself and send legal notices, but otherwise, artists can't afford to do the same.

The artistes are now slowly forming their own associations, which are still in its infancy stages, but there is a big movement to protect their works and get them copyrighted.

Bollywood (combined with other regional languages) is producing probably the maximum number of movies.Lot of cultures watch our movies.I was surprized to hear from one of my Jamaican guests that they watch Hindi movies. We cater to lot of people. The sheer number of movies and 6 times the number of songs, it is hard to imagine to create original tunes for each and every one.So it may be kinda of a necessity also for the music industry until we have many original writers and md's who enters and are accepted in the film industry.

Good to know that. They definitely need to collaborate on this matter.

Priya - do you know if the Creative Commons Licenses (http://creativecommons.org/) are valid in India?

I believe it is.

Do not practice this field, so not very uptodate, except on general principals and what is required for IF purposes.

Have many friends/ classmates who are experts in this field and can find out.

No doubt, we cannot go through life, being suspicious of every work we come across to check if it is an original or a copy, but sometimes, we just enjoy listening to something or even reading something which we know is copied. But when we come to know that, how do we view the second author. Will you want to go back and listen to another tune created by him or read another book written by him, knowing that it is possible that this one too is copied from the work of another great.

Well Priya ji,

You have said it all in those few words.

It is THE fear that scares most of our MDs not to give credit to the original man. The inability to generate new stuff combined with false hope of getting away without anyone realising the source makes them steal music- but then you will get into a vicious cycle in quest of the original man.

For all you know the Arab man would have "drawn a little inspiration" from his composer neighbour who in turn would have been "influenced " by a good friend composer from China and so forth.

There is no way you can establish the absolute originality of music as its not exactly like research work.

I think as music lovers you must quietly enjoy what you hear without tarnishing your image of the composer etc. Its not like Himesh, Pritam etc are our best friends who have betrayed us. If what you hear is good- enjoy it and be happy. If you cant beat them ( believe me it would be tough ) -join them

Probably you are right. We generally have more respect for past works than present ones😃.

Well Myths ji (sorry bit of a tongue twister there😳)

We may never be able to establish the originality of anything, as everything goes back to the age of Adam and Eve and the Apple and Snake.

Music to me is a prayer, a faith, a life line, a way of life.

A very personal opinion here again, If someone is unable to respect the purity in that music, has no qualms in just copying verbatim the creative work of another (I am for the moment assuming that he is copying stuff copied by another), I find it difficult to continue to listen to that person thereafter.

Taking the case of Anu Malik or HR or some others, who have blatantly lifted tunes and songs and have NO or ZERO creative work of their own, I find it difficult to listen to their songs without being reminded of the original and believe me, in todays age of internet, it is not so difficult to trace out the one from which the new has been copied.

Why not hear the original, when you can. Why listen to a copy.

Why watch a clone when you can watch Sachin Tendulkar play cricket?

Yes. It is when you watch such greats suffer at the hands of such 😕 (do not want to use any word for them) that you want to put additional efforts to protect their works and ensure that they get their rightful dues for their creativity.
