I was just wondering if copying GOOD music from some unheard of locales as in - an obscure Bangladeshi, a rare Arabic or some distant Bulgarian number and bringing it to us, is such a crime?

Beleive me , i love Ya Ali so much, but would have NEVER heard the original if i had lived a hundred years !! , or some of the other plagarised music for that matter.

I feel if the director can pick up good music from somewhere , take appropriate permission from the original composers and bring it to us, then big deal as to where it came from .

Well first of all I see that this is your first post...So welcome to IF!!! I'm sure you'll love it...

Second of all, I do agree with you. As long as the composer who has been "inspired" gives credit to the original, I believe it's okay. We do get to hear some beautiful music, even if it has been "inspired".

However, if the composer does not give credit, then there may be a problem. Thar is true plagiarism from the core...

So I believe that what you're talking about isn't really plagiarism. If it was, the composer wouldn't have credited anyone else.

Take Pritam for example. Now, since Pritam obviously has NOT credited anyone else, he may be in a soup......

Just my 2 cents.

Yes it is a crime, at least for the rest of the world and it is a shame we are still condoning it in India. Maybe that is the reason we are getting the third grade music that we are seeing in India

Plaguirism starts from a basic level

If I were to be writing a document and spending days on it, publishing it. you come in and plaguirize it for your own purpose, where does it leave all my effort?

take it to a higher level

There is a television show, if the entire format is copied with no credits to the original author, it constitues to a felony(why do you think some television programs in India pay huge fees to borrow the concept?)

Plaguirizing is plain wrong and a crime, till we as viewers fans do not accept it as a fact, we will have little talent growth. We have singers mimicing other singers, we have music directors plaguirizing, we have directors doing straight copies out of international films and they become Hits in India

Very soon Bollywood is going to be known as Chorywood

What is the height of Plaguirism?
A Hindi song inspires a popular remix on a international level, hits the top 100 and someone copy the remix and does not credit the original as well as the remix

Itne kasht kyu kare, why not just put subtitles and claim it as our own?(oh wait I forgot we even copy the lyrics and that too in the original language sometimes😉)

Pathetic

No, it is not a crime if the original person behind it is given the proper credit and is mentioned. Whenever someone writes a research paper, it is fine to quote someone and put the name of the original in the reference.

But stealing is a crime. I was watching an interview of Sameer Tandon few days back. Apparently, a director wanted to use the tune of a U2 song and wanted Tandon to use that tune in a song. He refused and somehow managed to contact Bono (U2 member) and acted as a middile man between the director and U2. U2 gave them the rights to use the song and asked for a small royalty. The tune was used for a Hindi song, but Tandon DIDNOT put his name as a music director for that song. He put his name as a Music Organiser for that song. My respect for him grew 10 times after listening the story.

then it wont be called as plaguirizing

It is like, copy karo lekin teacher ko bata ke😉

Main Entry: plagiarize
Pronunciation: 'plA-j&-"rIz
Function: verb
Inflected Forms: -rized; -rizing
Etymology: from plagiary plagiarist, from Latin plagiarius, literally, kidnapper, from plagium netting of game, kidnapping, from plaga net transitive verb : to copy and pass off (the expression of ideas or words of another) as one's own : use (another's work) without crediting the source <the book contained plagiarized material —Smith v. Little, Brown & Co., 265 Federal Reporter Supp. 451 (1965)> intransitive verb : to present as new and original an idea or work derived from an existing source —plagiarism /-"ri-z&m/ noun —plagiarist /-rist/ noun

If I dont put the next line, I am the original author, if I put the next line I am referencing(not plaguiarizing)

Plagiarism is a crime when the original source is not credited or if one does not take permission from the original artist.

What's the point of creating a unique tune only to have it lifted by a freeloader who then earns money on it? If I were a composer and I didn't have copyright protection, I would think twice before bothering to create. There would be no incentive to give it my best.

Plus, what is wrong in giving a royalty to the original composer? There would be no issues and everyone would get to enjoy the music.
