We told you she did, now we tell you how HT City caught up with Parul Mishra (19), the winner of the Fever 104 Voice Hunt upon her return from Chennai. Ecstatic, Mishra shares her experience and her dreams with us. Read on. So, how do you feel? Has it sunk in yet? I thought so, but I just got the news that I'll be fly- ing to Chennai again next week for practice. This time with singers like Kailash Kher: Madhushree, huge, huge, brilliant singers. I am going crazy all over again and frankly, I am dying to go back. What was it like? What were you asked to sing? I sang Main Albeli and Saiyan Chodo Moru Baiyyan from Zubeida and then Rahman sir asked me to sing something 'different', so I sang an old classical Lata Mangeshkar song. I was so sure my audition was bad because Rahman's expressions were blank. I was shivering by the end of it. Who broke the good news? Rahman himself. Actually he didn't want to, he did- n't want to hurt anyone. But finally he came and con gratulated all of us and said we have great voices. And when he said, 'Parul you will sing with me on the 17th, you have a God-gifted voice, use it,' my first reaction was, 'Sir, you have to be joking.' 01-*p-4 * qi I " 1 I 8 ' 0 I VI p Finally there: A series of snapshots of contest- ants at Rahman's studio in Chonnai waiting to sing for the maestro

The golden voice
Damini Purkayastha

Jamming with RAHMAN..
S he started her career as a playback singer in 1984 with Kalyanji Anandji's Pighalta Aasman. Sadhana Sargam, the voice behind superhits like Pehla Nasha and Chupke Se, is hailed as one of Bollywood's best singers.

AR Rahman, it is said, feels that Sadhna is a talent that exceeds expectations. When asked about the compliment, she is humble. "It is always exciting to work with him. People love his songs and he is such a modest human being," she gushes. Rahman and Sadhna have had a hit pairing, with both their Tamil scores and Hindi numbers topping the charts. Some of the songs they have done together include, Chande Re, Chupke Se (Saathiya), Banno Rani (Earth), O Palan Hare (Lagaan).

"It's not just composition. He does a lot of re search into every song. He also welcomes our inputs," she informs.

As part of Rahman's troupe for the past few years, she has performed live with the maestro all over the world. She says, "When he sings live, it's magical. As for the upcoming show in Delhi, Sadhna is excited as ever. "Dilli waale toh dildaar hote hain, artist ki kadar karte hai," she ends.

B efore Roja and Bombay, Hariharan wasn't a very fa- miliar name. I owe a large chunk of my career growth to AR Rahman." That was Hariha- ran, of Colonial Cousins' fame. The music ace confirms that he is looking foward to the concert in Delhi. "More so because it's a Rahman concert and it's sheer pleasure performing with the man," he adds. He can sing in six different Indian languages. He is also the founder of one of the first successful Indian-fusion acts, Colonial Cousins. And he is most certainly a person who takes music very seriously Ac- . tually seriously enough to wor- ry about the missing link that will bring together the coun- try's audience with the im- mense young talent present in the Indian music industry . He has worked with Bolly- wood's fresh crop of composers Vishal-Shekhar and Shankar- Ehsaan-Loy and has also dab- bled with acting. His new album, Waqt Pe Bol- na, experiments with a fusion of Urdu and Blues in a few tracks. He took two years to come up with this album, but then, he's been busy touring for concerts all across the country and the world. "I do things when I feel like doing them. I wanted to draw a parallel be- tween Urdu and Blues, Ghazals aren't just sung on a certain pitch, they are conversed. I don't limit myself to a particu- lar genre, there's an audience for everything." Talking about his audience in Delhi, he laughs, "I've seen various sides of Delhiites. There are all kinds of music lovers; bhangra, pure classical, pop, western genres and much more. Sometimes they are a de- light and on other unlucky oc- casions they have drenched us with water, throwing bottles on stage. I hope at least in this con- cert there are no bottles."
