A.R. Rahman to set up music school
IANS - 1/8/2008

Hyderabad, Jan 8 (IANS) Music maestro A.R. Rahman Tuesday announced that he would soon set up a music school to scout for new talent.

"It has been a long time dream for me. I think the right time has come now," he said after visiting the Ameen Peer Dargah, a Muslim shrine in Kadpa town, about 400 km from here.

Though a formal announcement will come only after three months, Rahman said he was receiving a lot of encouragement and support from various people for the project.

Rahman, whose latest compositions for Ashutosh Gowariker's "Jodhaa Akbar" will be released on Jan 9, expressed his best wishes for Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi, who is planning to join Andhra Pradesh politics.

"I wish Chiranjeevi all the best," said Rahman.

Accompanied by his family members, Rahman offered a 'chadar' at the shrine he visits every year.

A staunch devotee of the saint who is said to have come from Bidar in Karnataka 400 years ago, Rahman has been popularising the shrine among the film fraternity. In November last year, actor Abhishek Bachchan and his actress wife Aishwarya Rai had offered prayers at the dargah

Rahman teams up with Ghai again
24 Jan, 2008 12:02 pm ISTlRenuka Vyavahare/INDIATIMES MOVIES

Ace music composer AR Rahman and renowned filmmaker Subhash Ghai created a masterpiece when they teamed up to create the music of ' Taal '. May be that's the reason why Ghai chose to invite Rahman to launch the music of his forthcoming film, ' Black and White ' in Mumbai. Rahman being Ghai's lucky mascot, only time will tell if his presence will add to the magic of Ghai's trademark soulful music...

"I have introduced so many actresses in my films. This time around I am launching an actor. Anubhav Sinha, a talented youngster who won a TV reality show which was a hunt for budding actors, will be seen in my film. I have cast him with Anil Kapoor. Black and White is a low budget film but directed by me with absolute passion and honesty", said the director.

"As far as the music is concerned, to bring out the colourful music in the framework of ' Black and White ' has been a big test for me this time. But the in-depth melodies composed by Sukhwinder and lyrics by Ibrahim Ashq shall meet the expectations of music lovers and my fans I am sure. You need to listen carefully to the music of Black and White to feel it. It's like ecstasy! It grows on you", added the filmmaker about the music.

Knowing his keen sense of music and the chartbusters that his films have given, we are waiting with baited breath to listen to the music of Black and White .

Rahman sings for G.V. Prakash

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

It is known to everyone that the young music composer G V Prakashkumar is related to the music maestro A.R. Rahman. Prakash is the son of Rahman's elder sister.

Though the young man has won several hearts by his youthful and imaginative tunes, he is yet to receive any appreciation from his uncle.

Rahman, however, has the habit of uttering a few words of appreciation on his nephew, while talking to his sister. Prakash has recently asked Rahman to sing a song in his composing and Rahman is said to have accepted the request. It is believed that the uncle would sing in his nephew's music soon.

'Roja' on Time magazine's 10 best soundtracks list

Music maestro A.R. Rahman's "Roja" has featured on Time magazine's 10 best soundtracks of all times.

Reacting to the news Rahman said that future is unpredictable and you never know what it has in store for you.

"You never know what the world has in store for you. Suddenly you find "Roja" being selected as one of 10 best soundtracks in the world by Time magazine," Rahman told IANS.

The long wait to see one of our popular musicians go west finally seems to be on the verge of ending. Rehman, who scored big points for his Bollywood explosion in Andrew Lloyd W
ebber's staged musical "Bombay Dreams", is all set to make his full-fledged musical in Toronto.

"I like it when what I do here (India) is recognised abroad. The musical stage version of "Lord Of The Rings" happened in Toronto. I scored music for specific characters in the play," he said.

Why such a delayed international impact?

"Actually, Shekhar Kapur got me a couple of Hollywood films three-four years ago. But I wasn't ready then. Now with the Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Bombay Dreams" behind me I'm more confident.

"It's the first time that a musician from the Orient is being called to score in the West regardless of colour and creed. It's not about whether you're an Indian or a foreigner. I was apprehensive whether I could swing it. But it has gone well!"

Rahman sees "Lord Of The Rings" as his natural progression into the West.

" 'Bombay Dreams' did flash A.R Rahman's name. But it was seen as Indian music.

And I'm proud of that. But 'Lord Of The Rings' is very exciting because it's got nothing to do with my being Indian. Composing for a stage play requires 10 time more energy than a film score."

A.R. Rahman
AR Rahman was cleared in a petition filed against him by the General Secretary of the Jebamani Janatha Party, Mohanraj. The petition was disposed of by Chief Justice AB Shah and Justice Jyothimani. The petition alleged that the singer capitalized on India's Independence and intended to make profits off the national Independence Day of the country. He also said in the petition that the National Anthem is to be sung in exactly 52 seconds but the singer prolonged his version of the song to more than six or seven minutes.

After delving into the accusation, that the petition made, the Chief Justice said that it is the right of all citizens to sing the National Anthem. The judges pointed out that in a case disposed of earlier refusing to sing the National Anthem is not a punishable crime. The judge dismisses the petition and advised the petitioner not to file such ridiculous petition in the future.
