OP Nayyar found!
By: Vickey Lalwani

A few years ago, music director O P Nayyar disappeared. He moved out of his Churchgate flat at Shraddha building, where his wife and children continue to stay.

Everyone believed he was homeless and penniless. But now, MiD DAY reveals that the sprightly 80-year-old lives in Thane, with a family he met at a phone booth — the Nakhwas.

A woman in her 30s, ushered us into a room where Nayyar was sitting on a bed. Nayyar had only one condition before the interview. Calling for chilled beer, he said, "I shall answer your questions only if you have a drink with me."

So why isn't he at home, with his own family? "I have always had my way. I can't live the way others want me to. I have three daughters and a son, who stay with their mother in Churchgate. I walked out on them. We had some serious differences."

He explains how he ended up living with the Nakhwas, a Maharastrian family. Eleven years ago, he met Raju Nakhwa (the woman who had welcomed us in) at a phone booth in Thane. For seven years before that, he was staying at Juhu Hotel, courtesy his friend Agarwal, the proprietor of the hotel.

"I used to frequently go to that phone booth. When Raju saw me, she took me to her parents, who asked me to move in with them. They even gave me the master bedroom, while they slept in the hall. They took a nominal rent from me in the beginning, but soon we developed such a bond that they stopped taking anything. Do you get such people these days?"

Nayyar adds that Raju is everything to him today — mother, sister, daughter, grand-daughter. "Agar main jawan hota, to main Raju se shaadi kar leta. Woh meri jaan hai." Raju adds, "If I am out for my aerobics or ayurvedic class and get late, Baba goes and stands outside the building. He gets terribly anxious."

While eating, the topic shifts towards the Mangeshkar sisters who ruled the roost during Nayyar's composing days.

Says Nayyar, clenching his fist, "I never liked Lata Mangeshkar's voice. People came to me with offers where they wanted her to sing. I refused those offers. Asha was unarguably the best. Asha loved not only my music but also me. Therefore, her voice for my tunes was always special."

Out of touch

Nayyar is not in touch with anybody from the film industry. "Film industry mein koi dost nahin hota. Everybody is here with a vested interest. Even Asha Bhonsle has not kept in touch with me. Woh toh mera naam lene se ghabrati hai. Main kisiko thook deta hoon, toh phir chaat-ta nahin."

On money, he says, "I have enough money which comes in the form of royalty from HMV and Indian Performing Arts. Mere paas itna paisa hai ki main bees sal tak kha sakta hoon. But I know that I will not live for 20 years more," he ends with a laugh.

Voices

Asha Parekh:
He is easily the finest musician of the country. Jaiye Aap Kahan Jayenge stands out as his best. He is straight to the point when he talks to you. Until two years back, I was in touch with him.

Khayyam:
He brought in a Punjabi style of music in Hindi songs. He is a very honest and frank person. More importantly, he is very disciplined. I haven't kept in touch with him, but we bump into each other at some programmes.

Nayyar-Asha

Woh Haseen Dard De Do — Humsaaya
Aao Huzoor Tumko — Kismet
Yeh Hai Reshmi Zulfon — Mere Sanam

OP Nayyar Found??

I didn't know he was lost 😕 . I'd seen him in C2005 early stages - in the episode w/ Kavita Krishnamurthy, on the day Aadesh and Ismail had a big fight.

I remember quite well - the guy who looked like AK Hangal in a hat. 😆

thanks Priya ji...

A very nice post about one of my favorites who actually became very popular without using Lata in any of his songs...

A funny coincidence - Mere Sanam is on Zee right now and I was watching it. Reminded me of OP and I ran over to HF. Was actually checking out some of his old songs when I read your post... 😊

He seems to be weird and arrogant! Of course I admire his music. Creative people are usually abnormal, but this is the height! Leaving his own family and moving in with some other family!

He always has had a big ego... Come on now, a person who declared that he would become successful without Lata in the 50's (and actually did it) - some can call it arrogance, others will call it self confidence in his abilities...

Rearding his moving in... Till we know the complete story, I wouldn't judge him based on one article in Mid-day...

Same thoughts Punjini. Thats a bit wierd.

But yes no question about his music. They were just great. The interview will cause a few ripples in the music industry I am sure.... Those were very bold statements.

Thanks Priya for the article.😊

Actually, we dont know under what circumstances he was forced to leave his house. As someone said above, I did not know that he was lost for I used to see him in the earlier SRGMPs.

Surely, at his age, he must have had some valid reasons for doing what he did. He did say in teh article that he could not live with them for various reasons.

Brilliant man, who has given us some wonderful music, who took on the guantlet thrown by Lata Mangeshkar that no one could survive without her, for having given Asha Bhosle the best songs of his career.👏
