'Surmayee Shaam' enthrals music lovers

MUSCAT — As promised, Harmony's Surmayee Shaam turned out to be an evening of spellbinding melody, as Hrishikesh Ranade and Prajakta Joshi have captivated the audience with their soulful singing.
It was an evening of majestic music in a mood and decorum that matched the concept of the show, which was based on the greatest semi-classical songs from Hindi films.
For nearly three hours, a capacity crowd at Le Grande hall of Al Falaj Hotel on November 25 rolled in sweet raptures of lilting melodies and when the encore to the last song of the evening Laaga Chunari Mein Daa reached its famous concerto climax, the audience stood in ovation, applauding the performers for an evening which will be remembered for a long time to come.
Hrishikesh Ranade proved with his flawless performance as to why he is one of the best upcoming singers of India. Prajakta Joshi too won the hearts of the audience with her expressive singing.
The crowd quickly took an affinity for these lovable and obviously young looking stars who were on their first professional performance outside India, thanks to the Harmony group of Muscat who spotted them on Zee TV's popular Sa Re Ga Ma Pa.
The Harmony group, who have also conceived and directed 'Surmayee Shaam', had clearly took all the efforts possible to present the vastly encompassing subject of Hindi film's semi-classical songs in an appealing and palatable way.
This was evident from the fact that almost the entire crowd of more than 1,100 Muscateers was glued to their seats till the end.
Apart from the interesting style of presentation that has become the hallmark of Harmony's concept shows, due credit also goes to the fact that the show started right on time as printed on the ticket.
An element of surprise in the show was the involvement of local singers Debashish, Hari, Kamal, Seema, Suvarna and Vineet, whose theatrical entries were staged interestingly as they joined in to sing with the guest artistes.
The highlight happened to be the song Ek Chatur Naa, performed by Kamal with Hrishikesh, complete with its histrionics.
Otherwise, melody flowed like a stream of a pure mountain spring through Hrishkesh's Poocho Na Kaise, Madhuban Mein Radhika and Prajakta's Baiyaan Na Dharo and Raina Beeti Jaaye.
The talented and highly trained accompanying musicians namely Kedar Paranjpe (keyboard), Prasad Joshi (tabla), Avinash Kulkarni (percussion) and Prasad Gondkar (sitar) gave enough occasions for the audience to celebrate. Local musicians Jayan (guitar/harmonium), Pradeep (flute) and Chetan (side-rhythm) blended well with the orchestra. Light effects by Amitabh Roy added magic to the whole ambience.
The music-loving audience of Muscat proved once again that their appetite for music is vast and that they can enjoy any kind of music provided it is presented well.
