'Justaju jiski thi usko to na paya humne..
Is bahane se chalo dekh li duniya humne...'

is a very situational song.. Umrao (Rekha) has bee invited to perform a mujra and she finds out her lover (Farookh Seikh) married to her childhood friend there.. She performs and the pain is truely reflected through Asha'jis voice and Rekha's potryal...

In fact I love all the Umrao Jaan songs.. will particularly mention 'Yeh kya jagah hai doston'

O ghata savari, thodi thodi baavri was simply beautiful... Hema looked absolutely gorgeous.. Another Hema Malini favourite of mine is 'Do naino me aansoo bhare hai, nindia kahaa se aaye' from Parichay... Lovely song sung by Lata'ji.. wonderful composition by Pancham.. and Hema looks great.. Also love the song 'ghar jayegi' from the same movie where Hema is finally ready to go to her sasural after long years..

I think the song you are referring to is from Khushboo. Hema Malini did not work in Parichay.

Song from Sujatha..... the famous Telephone song..

"Jalte hain jiske liye, teri aankhon ke liye, doond laaya hoon wahi, geet main tere liye...."

Sunil Dutt on the phone with a sobbing Nutan on the other end of the phone, again romance at its height.

On page 3 Aparna Vittal gave a nice description of this song situation. I wonder if this was the first 'phone'song in Hindi cinema.

Oh yes, love all the songs in Umrao Jaan. Only one complaint. Rekha has put on too much make up, really overdressed, but I guess its justified since she plays a courtesan.

I like many numbers along with their picturization. many have been mentioned already by others - tum pukar lo and others. (I am sorry I couldnt read all 33 pages of it, cos I thought I might forget the song thats coming to my mind right now).
I like the picturization of 'O mere Pyaari Bindu' from Padosan (laughed my heart out).
And from latest (not so latest) - Main koi aisa geet gaoon from Yes Boss (find it cute). Whenever I feel depressed I just switch on these songs.

You must go back and read the discussions we had on Padosan songs. There was quite a bit of exchange!

But even other makers of yore were greats....but somehow..in this forum all of us seem to like the same chappies....You see.....I do not like Raj Kapoor myself (in Anil Kapoor's lingo....he was like..."yeda bankey peda khana" type of a person...in the movie his character always used to be seedha saadha/bhola bhala and he used to parade the women any which way he wanted in his movies.....according to me this was nothing but hypocracy at it's best.....i.e. be a hypocrite and be praised for it!!!

So it is quite pleasing to see that most of us here are Dev/Vijay Anand/Guru Dutt and Madhubala fans.....

Yeah there is something I don't like about Raj Kapoor, don't know what...

THose days, they used to do all that without much technical advancement. There was a passion, a vision. Guru Dutt is my all time favourite. Next is Vijar Anand.

Talking about music, those days they didn't even have digital rectifiers. And yet such perfection in singing. Look at HR now. Uses heavy rectification in his songs.

Guru Dutt was the absolute master!!! He didn't get his due recognition..If he were born outside India, I think he could have reached the ranks of the great directors of world cinema..

About technology, though you can always find someone like ARR who uses it to such great effect, I have a feeling that in some ways it is actually killing creativity in music.. it has paved way for besura singers, who cannot sing live in sur, also there are just too many effects used in todays music I feel which sometimes just spoils the integrity/beuty of the composition or the virtuosity of the vocalist..digital technology has made mediocrity viable!!!

Digital technology has made mediocrity viable? You said it. My views too! Too many effects camouflaging the real voice of the singer!
