Well, I am a bengali and I know what you all are meaning! You know when a child is about 4 yrs old, bengali parents put them into singing, dancing and painting classes. This is a must, if the child is a girl! I have learnt all these three (not mastered any though)...

When I go to Kolkata to meet my relatives, we have big addas where we all sing together or make up stories...

It is very true that Bengalis have music within them....

A child growing up in Kolkata has more chances of getting interested in singing, dancing, painting, acting and so on. As I said, this is because of the "mahaul" there. It's a haven for artists.

For example, if I wish to learn classical music in Kolkata, i would find a teacher close to my house and soon I would even get a chance to sing in front of an audience whenever a Puja comes along and the neighbourhood stage gets set up.

In places like Delhi, it is difficult to learn music or even find people who appreciate music. The passion is missing.

Jatin mentioned this in one of the SRGMP episodes. He said Bengalis have contributed immensely to Hindi film music. Classical singing is a part of their tradition. This is exactly why so many participants in SRGMP were from Bengal. I remember Sanchali, Ujjaini, Keka, Abhijit, Saptak, Debojit (yeah he is a Bengali living in Assam).

Maharasthra is another state where classical music is taken seriously and a lot of youngsters are pulled into it.

Somehow this is not happening in other parts of the country.

Classical singing and dancing is pretty dominant in the south also, isn't it? 😊

Oooops! How could I leave out the South. Yes, Carnatic music is definitely well-nurtured in the South, but there is a decline over the years in the sense that more youngsters are going for coaching in other subjects rather than training to be singers or dancers. Also, most of the people who learn music or dance invariably give it up when they get involved in school and college exams, GRE, MBA preparations and so on.

Yes also. Sir this not my saying please ask any elder around you who will tell you the same. Yes thing has changed today due to the in balanced political ratio in India today.

I will try my best to list few name and write few line as much my memory will serve me to think. Musician and singer, Bappi Lahiri, Hemant Kumar, Kishore Kumar, Kumar Sanu, Ravi Shankar, Salil Choudhury, Rahul Dev Burman, Sachin Dev Burman, Shamol Mitro Geeta Dutt, Manna Dey, Bhupen Hazarika, also Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay has been a well known literar figure of Bengal He has also been actively involved with Bengali cinema as well as Hollywood. One of his immortal creations is the fictional detective Byomkesh Bakshi. Later he moved to Pune. Abhijit, Shaan, Syria Ghosal and Babul Supriyo thousands more name to write still it will not finish. Kolkata has been regarded since ages as the cultural capital of India. It is famous for the book-fairs every winter. The International Book Fair held by the Publishers and Booksellers Guild every year is the biggest fair in Kolkata, one of the biggest festivals in Kolkata, and the only truly secular one. People from every walk of life converge on the Fair Grounds to buy books, eat food and celebrate the spirit of books. It is a cultural fiesta.

Bengal is one of the most important cultural hubs of India.

There was a saying by Gopal Krishna Gokhale, "What Bengal thinks today, India thinks tomorrow". It is the birthplace of India's only Nobel laureate in literature, Rabindranath Tagore. The world famous film director Satyajit Ray was also born here. He along with Bhanu Athaiya is one of only two Oscar winners from India, and won an Oscar for Life Time Achievement. Apart from this, Bengal gave birth to innumerable well known poets and writers who enriched the world literature ceaselessly. Some prominent members include Kazi Nazrul Islam, Michael Madhusudan Dutt, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay and Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. Also from West Bengal is the famous Indian singer in films, Kishore DA (a Bengali by lineage but born in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, India), as well as the world-famous sitarist Shankar. One of the unique identifiers of Bengali Culture is Durga Puja. I have tried my best with my very little knowledge to give a better explanation why Bengal is the backbone of Indian culture. Let us not get into any kind of argument let us all learn few good things about Indian Culture and it History as we all know learning has no limitation.

Kishore Bhakta

Since u mentioned so many names, can u add Ut. Allaudin Khan (Pt.Ravi Shankar's teacher) and Ut,Vilayat Khan (Pt.Ravi Shankar greatest contemporary rival) to the list as well (unless if the figures u have to be born in the present day India only)

😊
