Did Nihira suffer because of wrong song?

To understand ID it is important to understand his music...afterall they say music is reflection of your thoughts.
ID is a composer whose music is heavily classical, who else would think of using Ustad Sultan Khan today( for Hum dilde chuke sanam in song Albela sajan aayo re..on raag Ahir Bhairav), because of which he fails to connect with masses. Another example is wo na aayenge palat kar (Devdaas, based on raag Khamaj). Now it goes without saying that these songs are very tough to be sung by masses, another example is tera jadoo chal gaya...which is not attempted even by Sonu Nigam on stage.
If these compositions are by any mean reflection of his thoughts, then I can concur that he needs to connect with masses.
It is more difficult to make songs which are classical in nature & still click with people, this is where RD Burman succeeded in striking a balance, this is where JL clicked to good extent.
When ID had to select a song it is obvious that he will go for a heavy classical esp. when he wanted to showcase Nihira's talent, such as Saathi bhool na jana mera pyaar (Kotwaal saab, 1977).
A tough raag based composition may not have a mass appeal & thats what happened here. But to conclude that ID wanted it the other way, might be overanalysing the situation. I'll maintain that he knew that Nihira's exit was almost certain & he wanted to present her in the greatest way.
IMHO when singers like Nihira are voted out or when a rendition like Saathi bhool na jana fail, it reflects a deper pathology, it means somewhere Hindi music is going downhill everyday. It means songs like Dil fitna or Aashiq Banay Aapne will rule the roast for the time being. It means somewhere people are confusing between a dancer & a singer.

Jugalhansraj,
You can always choose to ignore this topic.
Sinha,
I agree with what you said. It seems people can't appreciate intricate compositions anymore. They like simple songs like
"dil keh raha hai..." or "aashiq banaya..."

And yes Sinhaji, I agree with you 100%. But then, if ID was composing music, say 20-25 years ago, then what would've been the scenerio? Has our music taste declined over the years or has the state of music declined over the years?

Is it that our music taste has devolved due to bad composers or is that there are bad composers because our music taste has devolved?

.

IF you recall Salil Chaudhary was also classical & didnt work for a lot of movies still he is counted as one of the best. I think ID will go in the same line. Taste certainly has changed....gradually but then abruptly after 1990, when AM & others started using compu sythesized beats.
I still think ID would have been appreciated if produced music 25 yrs ago.
Hmmm: some where way back mdroy wrote there are 3 factors mainly which determine the music:

1. composer's capability
2. Film producer's pressure..
3. Public taste

I think these factors explain why our tste has changed.

with folk and classical nuances. Shantani Moitra got nominated for Parineeta and Yahaan, but his music is deceptively simple for the masses to relate to. He brings in that element of subtle romanticism, serious fun (pun intended), and deep desolation along with that heavy inkling of silence in his music. S-E-L won the award for Best Music for B&B. I personally would've given it to Shantanu Moitra for parineeta.

This is perhaps hallmark of all Bengali composers.
Im huge fan of RDB but I often think somewhere many of his music is quite melancholic.

If you recall the most memorable performances in SRGM 2005 have been those renditions which were actually compositions of RDB/SDB/ARR...that speaks volume.

Hi, I am not knowledgeble as you guys when it comes to music.. I listen to the music which touches your heart and pleasing to your Ear..

I said in this forum that Nihira is out, Id's fault.. I never heard that song before.. compitaion is getting toucher n tougher he should hv selected a song which is familiar if not popualr, mass simply could not connected to the song...

When we think about the certain singer of the episode we think with a song Ex - Hemu - Hi Rama ...or Vinit - tera chaadu chal gaya or Himani - Jiya dhaka..right.. so just think back that particular episode can u recall Nihira's song.. NO.. that's why she did not get the Vote .. result being one of the best singer of SRGMP.. she is out now.....she did suffered because of wrong selection..

Nihira was terrific . As for the song, Ravindra Jain said it was one of his best compositions. Kavita Krishnamurthy sang it too in "dil vil pyar pyar"
