To understand ID it is important to understand his music...afterall they say music is reflection of your thoughts.
ID is a composer whose music is heavily classical, who else would think of using Ustad Sultan Khan today( for Hum dilde chuke sanam in song Albela sajan aayo re..on raag Ahir Bhairav), because of which he fails to connect with masses. Another example is wo na aayenge palat kar (Devdaas, based on raag Khamaj). Now it goes without saying that these songs are very tough to be sung by masses, another example is tera jadoo chal gaya...which is not attempted even by Sonu Nigam on stage.
If these compositions are by any mean reflection of his thoughts, then I can concur that he needs to connect with masses.
It is more difficult to make songs which are classical in nature & still click with people, this is where RD Burman succeeded in striking a balance, this is where JL clicked to good extent.
When ID had to select a song it is obvious that he will go for a heavy classical esp. when he wanted to showcase Nihira's talent, such as Saathi bhool na jana mera pyaar (Kotwaal saab, 1977).
A tough raag based composition may not have a mass appeal & thats what happened here. But to conclude that ID wanted it the other way, might be overanalysing the situation. I'll maintain that he knew that Nihira's exit was almost certain & he wanted to present her in the greatest way.
IMHO when singers like Nihira are voted out or when a rendition like Saathi bhool na jana fail, it reflects a deper pathology, it means somewhere Hindi music is going downhill everyday. It means songs like Dil fitna or Aashiq Banay Aapne will rule the roast for the time being. It means somewhere people are confusing between a dancer & a singer.
