This is SABOTAGE!

Gajendra Singh says one of the judges is out to nix Sa Re Ga Ma Pa

Subhash K Jha

The plot thickens. After walk-outs, show-downs, tears and trauma, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge producer-director Gajendra Singh now claims that one of the judges on his show is out to sabotage it.

"I haven't slept for more than forty-eight hours," says an anguished Singh. "My show is is in jeopardy. My show is being reduced to one of those cheap reality-television programmes on the other channels where contestants pretend to faint and then they are revived when water is sprinkled on them. I've been doing the show for more than a decade and have never been visited by this kind of trouble before." Singh reveals that the most recent scandal on the show, namely the threat by three contestants Vinit, Hemachandra and Himani to quit and their effort to malign and discredit Debojit, have been orchestrated by one of the judges.

"It was he (refuses to disclose the identity) who instigated those innocent kids into behaving in this fashion. He couldn't bear to see another judge steal all the limelight by staging a walk-out," he says. "So he decided to be a star-judge in his own right. His conspiracy backfired and my show suffered in terms of credibility. I plan to expose this man who abused the guru-shishya relationship after the finals. At present I need to salvage the show and boost the finalists' morale." In a startling revelation, Singh defends controversial contestant Debojit's alleged ULFA links. "What ULFA links? I agree one of the Sa Re Ga Ma assistants did receive a call from someone claiming to be part of ULFA. But has anyone verified Debojit's connection to the call?," he asks. "Are we hounding him just because he has support from his home- state Assam? Vinit's mother has gone on record accusing this particular judge of dubious intentions. I agree, Himani's elimination from the show was tragic. But the show must go on, and it will."

WHODUNIT?

Ismail Darbar:
Stormed out of the sets, on-camera, when his favourite contestant Nihira Joshi was eliminated, only to return to the show later. He stormed out again on the same day, protesting against the alleged partiality displayed by Srivastav and Reshammiya. Darbar alleged that the two gave less marks to his protege Debojit.

Adesh Srivastava: Threatened to quit the show on the grounds of co-judge Ismail Durbar's high-handed behaviour. The two were involved in a verbal dual where neither minced any words.

Himesh Reshammiya: Midway through the contest Reshammiya was awarded a Brahmastra, which enabled him to get two contestants (who've been voted out) back into the show. The two contestants were Paresh and Ujjaini. Reshamiyya also claimed that he had given offers to aspirants, which miffed Jatin-Lalit no end.

Jatin-Lalit: They were peeved by the tall claims Reshamiyya made about giving some of the contestants the much-needed break. They claimed that these so-called offers rarely materialise in the music industry.

* Darbar has been cleared by Singh. So, who do you think it is:

a) Srivastava b) Reshammiya c) Jatin-Lalit. To SMS your reply type MPOLL (space) a, b or c

Vinit, Hema Chandra and Himani said they want to quit

When Vinit's name was announced as the Challenger with the second highest votes, he came on stage with Himnai and Hema Chandra; all three of them apologized and said that they want to quit the show. They apologiesd to Gajjendra Singh, the mentors and the audience. When Shaan asked them why they wanted to quit, Himani said that Nihira's elimination last week was very painful and if one person had to be eliminated every week, they all might as well leave together. Ismail Darbar also said that they are doing this because Debojit got the highest votes. He asked Vinit if he thinks he is a better singer than Debiojit. Vinit said that he is not taking any names.

The studio audience also got involved in this. Some people in the audience said that these 3 want to quit because Debojit got the highest votes and they cannot take it.. Shaan asked them not be diplomatic at this point. There was complete chaos with the audience, the participants, the host, the mentors, the participant's family member all trying to talk and make their arguments. Gajendra Singh finally came on stage and screamed at the participants and the shoot was stopped for some time.

The shoot resumed with Himesh R coming on stage and saying that after whatever has happened, he asked the audience if everyone agrees that some one will be eliminated today. If everyone agrees on this, then Nihira being eliminated last week cannot be called injustice. Vinit performed and afire his performance, his mother apologized to the mentors and the audience. She said that he is very young and if something he did or said has hurt people's feelings, then she apologies on his behalf.

After Hema Chandra's performance, his mother also apologiesd. She said she apologizes for whatever these kids did or whatever/whoever made them do this. At this, Himesh Reshamiya got up and was very upset. He said that she should not have accused him as they are trying to save their chidden. She had not right to accuse him of anything. She said she did not mean that. Hema Chandra also explained to him that there is a language problem. But he did not listen. He said that this was a very manipulated statement and he is not a fool to believe that this is a language barrier. Hema's mother apologized but Hiemsh did not listen. The shoot was stooped again and when the shoot resumed Himesh asked Hema's mother to forget about the whole thing.

Himani was eliminated, she apologized to everyone and was crying. She said she was very happy to have reached where she has. She also apologized to her parents who were there. Aaesh said that everyone knows she is really good and she is extremely popular, so this elimination does not matter. Himesh said that she is the winner as far as the girls are concerned. The Friday episode was not shot.

Himani sings again...

You will not see it on television though... star judge for Sa Re Ga Ma Pa finals, Subhash Ghai, asked her to croon for him

Subhash K Jha

http://www.mumbaimirror.com/nmirror/mmpaper.asp?sectid=19&am p;articleid=12120062357275001212006235613125

Ousted contestant Himani was thrilled to be recalled to Sa Re Ga Ma Pa for a song – at least during the rehearsals of the show's grand finale, by none other than Subhash Ghai. Ghai will be star judge for the finale. Ghai especially asked about Himani, and requested her to sing one of his favourite songs for him. Pleased at the special attention given to her by Ghai, Himani says, "When I was asked to join the finalists to meet Subhashji I was ecstatic. It was a dream come true to meet him. He asked me to sing Reshmaji's 'Lambi judaai...' from his film Hero. When I sang the song, Subhashji seemed very moved."

Last Thursday the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa finalists got a pleasant surprise when Subhash Ghai dropped in for their rehearsal and stayed on listening to them sing for him for two-and-a-half hours.

"Subhashji is one of the most music-minded film-makers in Bollywood," says producer-director Gajendra Singh. "I had five long sessions with him before he finally met the finalists on Thursday. Apart from the three finalists Debojit, Vinit and Hemachandra, he especially asked about Himani (who was ousted from the show this week). Subhashji made them all sing his favourite songs. He wanted to stay on, and left quite reluctantly." They say Ghai himself is a music composer of sorts. Though you wouldn't catch him admitting it, it is said that Subhash Ghai has personally composed some of the most famous melodies from his huge repertoire of soundtracks.

"We've planned two sections for the finale, when Subhashji will join us." adds Gajendra Singh. "One devoted to old songs and the other to newer melodies. We'll record with him on January 30." The finals will be telecast on February 2 and 3.

Jus'Talking : The wrong tune of a talent contest
Samrat Choudhary
New Delhi, January 21, 2006

A voice from Assam can be the voice of India as much as a voice from Delhi or Mumbai or Chennai

TV these days is so full of low-quality drama that I've given up watching it. A saas or a bahu occasionally registers fleetingly on my TV screen and my consciousness.

Apart from that there are those equally interminable 'talent hunts'. These compete with WWE in their style of building up rivalries and contests. Singers deliver dialogues in the manner of Batista meeting John Cena.

It's all too melodramatic to bear, but apparently it works with most of my country cousins. Now one of these shows, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa on Zee TV, has finally neared its finale. The mode of selection of these contestants was mainly by viewers poll on phone and SMS.

The first contestant who made it to the round of three is Debojit from Assam. He suddenly found himself facing a rebellion from his fellow-contestants, who threatened to walk out of the event without explicitly stating why. I would have changed the channel at all this natak but a statement by one of the 'mentors' in the show stopped me.

Debojit got 80 percent of his votes from Assam, Adesh Shrivastava said. "We want a voice of India, not a voice of Assam", someone in the studio shouted. Fair enough. Except that, firstly, the fellow had polled more votes than other prospective 'voices of India', and secondly, Assam is still despite its several insurgencies a part of India.

A voice from Assam can be the voice of India as much as a voice from Delhi or Mumbai or Chennai. For the past few centuries, the West has dominated the world. So their perceptions of what is 'mainstream' have come to dominate globally.

Today we all speak English, listen to pop and rock, pride ourselves on our knowledge of Hollywood and European soccer, and of course dress in jeans and skirts and such likes. However, the point to note is that the average college or school student in America doesn't know Hindi, or listen to Indian music, or follow cricket, or know who Amitabh Bachchan is.

When Big B was voted the greatest star of stage or screen in a BBC online poll in 1999, there was considerable consternation in the West. The thing that went around then was that India, with its huge population, had voted for Big B and so he won there was no way he could be better than the best of the West.

Which may be true. If the world accepts the definition of what is 'good' cinema. Unfortunately, for me, a song from Chhote Miyan Bade Miyan is better cinema than an hour of Gone With the Wind simply because I enjoy it more. So there are these disparities in the world.

The artists will treat non-artists as charlatans if we try their game. The West will be miffed if our man wins a global award over their icons. Their sense of domination will get jolted. Now think of how the 'centre' treats the periphery in India. If you don't speak Hindi, don't listen to Bollywood music, don't care about cricket, you're an outsider already.

If on top of that you look different say, Mongoloid your status as second-class citizen is almost confirmed. That's the way life is for many people from the Northeast who come to 'mainland India'.

They can either become duplicates of the 'mainstream' people or stay in their ghettoes. And even if they do adopt 'mainstream' ways, the story doesn't always end happily.

Like Debojit, for example, who sings in Hindi, but must now contend with the fact that his support base is from the Northeast and not the cow belt, which is the 'mainstream' merely because it sends more crooks to Parliament.
