Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa

Subhash K Jha

Priyanka Chopra flew down from Delhi to specially join the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa team to record their Republic Day special. "It was exhausting," Chopra concedes. "But it was worth the effort. I've been a Sa Re Ga Ma Pa fan ever since I can remember. In fact my dad (who likes to sing) and I were on the Baap-Beti special of the show. So when I was invited to be on the show I couldn't refuse. I rushed from Delhi on Monday afternoon and went straight from the airport for the recording." Priyanka had as much fun listening to the contestants as they had having her around. She says, "They were very good! I was supposed to select my favourite amongst them but I just couldn't bring myself to do so. I quietly wrote down one name and gave it to Gajendra Singh for future reference…I'm surprised at the amount of singing talent in this country. Since I'm fond of singing myself I felt so happy being with these truly gifted boys and girls."

The Republic Day special of Sa Re Ga Ma on Thursday with Priyanka will be interspersed with footage of the contestants at the Republic Day parade. While Hemachandra will be seen singing Ae watan tere liye (Karma) and A.R Rahman's 'Bande mataram', Debojit will croon 'Ae mere pyare watan'(Upkar) and Shankar Mahadevan's 'Suno gaur se duniya walo.'

ULFA threats frightened us'

Melodrama and threatened walk outs seem to be the order of the day on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005. The latest, high-tension moment occurred when Debojit won the maximum public votes on Friday, leading to Himani, Vineet and Hemachandra walking up to the stage and telling the judges that they wanted to leave the show. It appears that the ULFA's alleged threats have succeeded in frightening the daylights out of the finalists.
Although Vineet, who was spokesperson for the group, didn't utter the "U" word, instead attributing the decision to the fact that the three felt the process was unfair and demotivating since they also had good voices, the contestants seem to feel that winning is not worth their lives.

Says Hyderabadi boy Hemachandra, "We had read a news report about ULFA activists sending threats to the judges and that really frightened us. We are worried that in case one of us wins the contest instead of Debojit, our families might be targeted. But the judges convinced us to change our mind, saying that since we had reached this far, we couldn't walk out now and it would be a sign of accepting defeat," he says.

He is quick to disassociate Debojit from the ULFA threats. "Personally we don't believe that Debojit could be behind those threats but people think otherwise. I know for a fact that Debojit himself is quite shaken by the threats," he says in an attempt to defend his colleague, adding, "He is nine years older to us and we share a good rapport."

For his part, Debojit maintains that the group holds no animosity towards him and treats him like an older brother. Speaking about what happened behind the scenes after Ismail Darbar confronted Vineet threateningly on stage, he said, "Nothing dramatic took place. I personally feel that it was wrong on Vineet's part to have talked about having a good voice. Who are we to make such sweeping statements in front of such eminent judges? In fact, that was not what the three of us had actually decided to say. I don't know why Vineet said what he did, but yes he apologised to Ismail sir."

When asked about how he felt about Ismail's comments and behaviour, Hemachandra was diplomatic. "Look, we are all freshers and in no position to comment on other people's voices or rate our own skills. We are still raw and Ismail sir is a senior. He was not being rude to us. Whatever he says will only help us in our career and we must take his views in the right spirit," he says.

But now it seems as though only Vineet and Hemachandra will have to take this fight forward for their pal Himani has been eliminated leaving only Hemachandra to keep mentor Aadesh's banner flying high. "I'm feeling very bad. After Pratima and Rajiv left, there was only Himani and I from Aadesh's gharana, now I'm on my own," he says. Hemachandra tries to cover up the on screen drama by saying that everything is fine and hopefully things should progress smoothly now. Let's just hope his confidence is not misplaced.

ULFA's so called threat is 100% fabricated by Himesh & Adesh. Anybody, even with as little education as Adesh & Himesh could understand that it is a COMPLETELY FABBRICATED NEWS. See the news where Gajendra Singh caregorically denied any link of debojit and ULFA.

Mallika drops out of Sa Re Ga Ma at last minute
By IndiaFM News Bureau, January 24, 2006 - 03:24 IST

Just yesterday, there were media reports that Ayesha Takia and Mallika Sherawat were to appear on Sa Re Ga Ma as part of the promotions of the film, Shaadi Se Pehle. However, Mallika Sherawat left the producers of the show in a lurch, when she dropped out of the show at the eleventh hour. Just half an hour before the shoot schedule she sent a text message to the producer saying she was 'unwell.' Not knowing what to do, the producers got in touch with Subhash Ghai.

Being the professional that he is, he reached the studios of Sa Re Ga Ma in half an hour, flat, in order to make up for Mallika's absence. So the final episode will see the showman along with Ayesha Takia. While, they had a bitter experience with Sherawat, the producers only had good things to say about Ayesha. That's some brownie points for her.

We wonder if Mallika's absence had anything to do with the fact that just last week she was on the rival show Indian Idol 2? Go figure!

Is Vinit dating Himani?

Sa Re Ga Ma Pa contestant smitten on the sets or perhaps it is yet another publicity stunt

Kunal M Shah

The speculation over Vinit's mysterious girlfriend on Zee TV's Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005 has fuelled everyone's curiosity. The man in question, Vinit is playing his cards close to his chest and says that he will reveal all only in the last episode.

According to sources, the girl in question is Himani who was voted out a couple of weeks back.

An insider on the show says, "It is Himani and everyone knows it on the sets. Vinit was very upset when she was out of the show. He hugged her and cried. He could not control his emotions. All this made his love for her very apparent."

The cat-and-mouse game continues, with Himesh Reshammiya adding to the confusion. "I am the only person who knows who his girlfriend is, I will announce it in the last episode. He's dating one of the four- Himani, Nihira, Ujjaini or Riktima."

When we contacted Himani for her version, she said, "I am very close to Vinit. I have known him for many years. We first met on the sets of Antakshari and that's how we became friends. I know people think that we are seeing each other but it's not true. In fact, he has a girlfriend in Lucknow but she is yet to confess her love for him. Vinit is my best friend and I can trust him completely."

When we finally contacted Vinit, he initially tried to mislead us saying that he has a girlfriend in Lucknow. "I met my girlfriend four years back at a singing competition. She was here for my birthday." Later, he confessed that his lady love was very much part of the show, "Yes, seeing that you know so much already, I must admit that I am seeing someone on the show. She is my guiding force."

Is it Himani? "No, it's not Himani. Everyone feels so, but it's not her. I agree that she is my closest friend. I cried a lot and was very upset when she was voted out. I think that's why people think that we have a relationship." He adds, "My girlfriend was voted out long back and all I can say is that she is from Mumbai."

Going by what Reshammiya said, the only contestant among the four from Mumbai is Nihira. So is it Nihira or Himani?

• I am very close to Vinit. I have known him for many years and can trust him completely— Himani

• My girlfriend was voted out long back and all I can say is that she is from Mumbai— Vinit

This is not 'Assam ka voice' but 'India ka voice,' yelled a young women
after three brilliant singers decided to quit Zee's popular talent show, Sa
Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005 last week. So why was she furious?

The truth tumbled out when a gentleman from the crowd stated
vehemently, "Home ground 'value' is always there, and even in cricket it
happens." Vineet, a strong claimant for the Challenge 2005 title, feebly
responded, "But this is not cricket." The two others, Himani and Hema,
nodded in agreement, their discomfiture writ large over their faces.

Other voices were lost in the din that followed with the three famous
Bollywood 'mentors' on the show, Ismail, Adesh and Himesh, also losing
their cool. The last that was seen on the channel were parents of the
young singers also joining the fracas. As they gesticulated at each other,
the programme got mired in a controversy that blatantly redefined the old
aphorism, "Music is a language which knows no barriers."

Music buffs who believed in Lata Mangeshkar's words about music being
the 'voice of God' are incensed. To their utter dismay, music has erected
regional boundaries in this country. A contestant, Debu, gets 80 per cent
support from the North-east; Vineet and Himani's support base is Uttar
Pradesh and Haryana and other northern states; while Hema banks on an
overwhelming support coming from the South. So much for national
integration. So is A.R. Rehman now a South Indian musician, and Lata
Mangeshkar a Maharashtrian?

The programme's anchor, Shaan, was proud that 70 lakh people took part
in the programme by sending their vote either through sms or through
phone. But people like me who are music buffs, find all this
'demographic' break-up of aesthetic taste extremely sad. Whatever
happened to music one liked — irrespective of where it comes from?
