I though that song was based on Raga Basant, since it is uttaranga focused and it hardly ever touches the mandra saptak, if ever.
Roja and Bombay are perhaps his all-time bests. Singing wise, "yeh jo des hai tera swades hai tera" was the best from him, next to Vande Mataram. The lyrics, tune, and his voice will definitely capture you.
One thing I like paying attention to in his songs are his musical interludes. I love the second interlude of Tu Hi Re, where the sarangi plays a bit of Kaushikdhwani in tintal and ends up in Charukeshi. Choti Si Aasha had nice interludes, especially the second interlude where ARR lent his vocals. ARR was maybe one of the very few to incorporate Hindustani/Carnatic classical with Westernized rhythm and instrumentation.
