I dont understand why Gajendra Singh (or whoever else is responsible for the fate of saregamapa) is messing things up towards the final stages of C2005, when it is most crucial and all good singers are up against each other.
First of all, if the hunt is for a playback singer with a new voice, what role does "performance" play in it? The singer has to express the meaning of the song through the song, not swing and dance while recording the song in a studio (which the public will not be able to see anyway). All this "performance" is ruining the songs for the contestants. As many of the judges and mentors had pointed out earlier, first you should be able to sing well, then if you can and if you want, you can swing and dance but it should not affect your singing.
And this "performance" thing should not become part of a competition that is looking for playback singers - its not an Indian Idol, competition, for God's sake.
Secondly, judging should be left to people who understand and are trained in music to be able to identify subtle differences between singers. They should have brought all the judges and mentors together and judged the contestants. It should not be left to the audience voting according to popularity. Again, this is NOT an Indian Idol contest, it is a hunt for a playback singer and should be judged based on the ability to sing only for which a lot of technical stuff have to be taken into account and should not be left to the general masses to judge based on whether they are from their own region, or can dance well or looks good or talks well - these are not the required qualities of a good playback singer. Most people dont vote objectively - they're just too biased and forgot the reason behind their voting and the responsibility involved.
There should definitely be a classical round (saregama used to have it earlier) and it should be judged by people who have been trained by classical music and who can decide whether a raag has been sung correctly. About 80-90% of the masses probably have no training in classical music - how can they ever judge how good it is? You cant leave the fate of good singers in the hands of people, majority of whom dont understand ABC of music technically.
Saregamapa is totally messing up the competition by making the judging process so frivolous.
But I guess, one good thing is the the music directors (mentors) know exactly what each participants' potential is and they will probably be fair to them when giving them breaks later. But this ridiculous judging process has spoilt the competition for the viewers like us, who appreciate good music and want the competition to be fair.
