I have always regarded Shankar Mahadevan as the one to whom the torch was passed on after the Golden Era of Hindi film music.
Among all the songs I have liked in the past decade, those composed or sung by him form a big proportion. What's more I like that he ensures the lyrics are good too, which is again a hallmark of the Golden Era. I like the way S-E-L group blends music of the west with Indian, classical with rock, Carnatic with pop and so on.
In fact, it was only with Mission Kashmir (Rind Posh Maal, Dhuan Dhuan, Boomro) that I realised that today's music could be good too.

Yes Punjini some time back I started a thread on music of Rock on ( I am happy to see him doing experimentation with rock music so frequently, I have been a rock n roll renegade for long) and quite a few people opined that they liked that music, work of SEL on guitar riffs is always a treat, have you listened to : tu dhoop hai (TZP), that has zabardast riffs. Also there have been albums of SEL whic h went un noticed but was great like

Dil JO Bhi kahey
Marigold
Jhonny Gaddar
Dillagi (yes quite a few songs like dillagi title theme were work of SEL)
Ud Chale(High music school drama)
JBJ
I completely agree they have been particular about lyrics this is where ARR needs to take a lesson or two, in fact he was criticised by subbu for drowning the lyrics like rukmini rukmini shaadi ke baad kya kya hua,
patti rap, dil me sanam dil (...!!!!!!)

Quite a few of SEL songs are influenced by carnatic raaga, Shankar is living example of the fact that how classical training is a must to improve singing/composing etc.

I hope every one is aware that music of Rock on is on top US music page (ranking 13 and now 7th). Following albums have been good one: but not very popular

Rudraksh (2004)

Ye Kya Ho Raha Hai (one song yaar apne ghar jao had great bass guitaring and lead guitar riffs.

Lakshya (of course the great back ground score paved the path for Rock On)

Vanity Fair (2004)

Phir Milenge (2004)

Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute To Love (2007) Great music>>!!
Dil Jo Bhi kahey: title song has great riffs again and chords mixed to bring a youthful energised song, one can listen endlessly, also the title theme is pretty good, excellent and kitni narmi is so good it is all time fav of Sonu Nigam as well. Link for title song: (Please comment)

👍🏼 So happy to get connected with Shankar fans. He commands all the respect and attention only through his talent. Secretly all the contestants must want to belong to his gharana.
Shankar is truely outstanding and the other Gurus graciously accept this fact,I have to say.

I dont know if music of Jhonny Gaddar was noticed by many the song done by Yashita : title theme of Jhonny Gaddar has great chord combination and bassing (did you notice phaser and delay on lead guitar), some thing wrriten and done by Ehsaan in their troop, though Yashita missed lower notes it was great on energy. Also the famous doob ja mere pyar me is based on Lehraa which many though is copy of another song,

This album has some great work like revenge of 70s, other great instrumentals, brass is one section SEL usually avoid but one can listen to some brass work in this album

Thanks Indradhanush, I will listen to the albums you have mentioned. Somehow missed them.
As I said, it was with Mission Kashmir that I took notice of S-E-L. Then I kept a look-out for their movies because I knew that at least one song would be good if not more. That's how I listened to Dil Chahta hain, Lakshya, Don, Bunty aur Babli and Taare Zameen Par.
Did you like the background music of "Main hoon Don"? Though I am not an instrumentation expert like you, I just loved the music in this song! And the guitar in "Agar main kahoon" in Lakshya? Wow!
One song sung by Shankar mahadevan but composed by AR Rahman which stands out for me is from the Tamil movie Kandukondein Kandukondein - "Yenna solla pogirai". There's magic in his voice!

Why Shankar doesn't sing his own compositions?
Singers in west write compose and sing their own compostions
Shankar doesn't need any male singer to sing his compositions, he is such a superb singer, he should sing his own compositions.
I just wonder why he uses male playback singers, when he can sing better than them.

That's exactly what I like about him!! He is not obsessed with his own voice like you know who! He leaves us clamouring to hear more of him rather than less!
Of course, because he is not self-obsessed, he goes out to get voices like Shafqat Amanat Ali. I think he gets time to create because he uses other voices.

abslutely on spot, he gives breaks to new voices , he has recorded some wonderful singers from India and Pakistan which we didnt know before like mitwa. He is not alone is composing and it is a trio of S-E-L so all of them have say which voice suits which songs plus he has sung nearly for all musicians like Jatin Lalit, Ismail Darbar (albela sajan), ARR to name a few.

He said in one interview that his voice doesn't suit all songs.

If you listen to mai hoo don, there is a subtle menace in the song, music is by and large improvisation of background score used by Kalyan ji Anand ji in original Don, remember this?

^S-P-D(komal)-N(Komal)--M-M(teevra)-R(K)-S

now listen to this song again...!!
