True,Shankar uses his own voice judiciously. That is why we crave for more from him.How can we forget that Tare Zameen Par song Ma?It leaves you spellbound with teary eyes, EL with intruemental expertise are equally imortant for SEL music, and when they join hands with lyricist like Prasoon Joshi we get some of the best music of today.

now listen to this song again...!!

Yes, it is the subtle menace and eeriness brought out by S-E-L which was not there in the original Main hoon Don! Of course, the lyrics also play an important role in creating the fear.
Of course, I know it is an improvisation of the key theme of Kalyanji Anandji's Don - yet, it does not sound like a copy. The very beginning 'Duniya mein logon ne" is so differently done. I love the way the Don theme keeps coming into the song. Then there are the choral music-like interludes. I think this song is a work of genius. Of course, if Shankar had sung, it would have been even better.

I took notice of them in kal ho na ho! They are so great!

I think Shankar is the only one in the industry currently who I admire from every aspect. I get teary eyes when he is with his wife! Their story is so sweet!😳

After hearing Yashita and Shankar singing 'Johny Gaddar', I was prompted to go back to listen to the original. This is the first time I heard the song and I think it is another well-made song by S-E-L. Very reminiscent of the 70's music typified by RDB.
All the beauty of this song lies in the instrumentation. Fantastic! I am glad I watched this episode of SRGMP and discovered this song.

excelent tremolo use over lead guitar, the highlight is combination of chords, weird, just the hallmark of RDB as you said : Dminor/B Flat and then Ab6 (....!!!!!!), these combinations were used by RDB to devastatiing effect.
Shankar has said a few times in interviews that guitar riffs are normally looked after by Ehsaaan Noraani.

If you all love Shanker than hope you all did not miss catching his repeat telecaste of Yeh Sham Mastani couple of weeks back. Fantastic singing 👏 I have recorded it so I can watch him sing over and over.

really nice thread...thanks ID and punjini for your insightful posts.

I really admire Shankar the singer and SEL is my favourite MD currently. I took notice of them first in Dil Chahta Hai and then I found out later that they had also done mission kashmir which I had absolutely loved. I usually look out for their albums too and nowadays even more than ARR.

And about the episode...well this was the first time in many weeks that I actually sat in front of my TV and watched an entire episode of SRGMP. Shankar is my favourite mentor on the show and his gharana is also my favourite as I like his choice of singers such as Pratibha and Naina (unfortunately out now).

Ok now I know what is tremolo thanks to you :-) I remember this in RDB's music too!
You are right in highlighting that all this in not just Shankar's effort but the entire trio. I am sure Ehsaan is enormously talented and so is Loy!! They make a fantastic group which is only out to create using the best available voices.
