Asma, one of the top 10 finalists of Zee TV's show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, is facing flak from her mother for pursuing her dream of singing. Ameena Rafi is dead against her daughter's decision to be part of the show and makes no bones about it.

When contacted, Ameena was initially reluctant to talk, but after a lot of convincing said, "We are from Oman and it is not in our custom to do such a public display of any talent by a girl. Asma is no more for us. I do not want to meet her or see her. I have even severed ties with her father for supporting her decision."

When we asked her, if she would change her stance if Asma did well for herself, Ameena disconnected the call and did not pick up the phone in spite of several attempts.

Mohammad Rafi, Asma's father, sounding shattered said, "Yes it is true that Asma's mother is against Asma's participation in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. She said, 'Wo jism ki numaish karti hai'. I divorced my wife two months ago to support Asma. She is not doing anything wrong. I know she will win. I have complete confidence in her. She is a good singer and she has the right to fulfill her dreams."

Mohammad Rafi

When we spoke to Asma, initially she said only good things about her experience. However, when we revealed to her that we knew about her personal trauma, she opened up and said, "I do not know why my mother is doing this to me. I like singing but she is forbidding me to do what I like to pursue. I know she loves me a lot.

All my siblings (three sisters and two brothers) are supporting me, then why not her? But I am thankful to Allah that I was able to reach this level in the contest. Even if I don't win, I will still not give up singing. I plan to stay in Mumbai to complete my studies."

Asma broke down when we asked whether she was still in touch with her parents. "No. It's been five months now but I have not been able to talk to papa properly. My mother does call me up but to abuse me and my father. I am alone in Mumbai. My mother's calls wreck my mental peace. But are you sure she said that I am no more alive for her?" she asked, sobbing uncontrollably.

It is sad to know of her personal trauma. I admire her because she still keeps smiling although things arround her are in a mess.
I may not be a fan of her singing but I like her dedication and will to win. I am happy that her father is supporting her. I am surprised at her mom since she is a Lady and if she will not support her daughter than who will.
I hope the best for her in personal life and may she come out of the crisis like she always does i.e. Smiling.

This is a complicatd case but generally the Dad should first support the mum. The mum is very attached to the daughter and concerned for her. The fact that the Dad is now not around indicates that he is trying to come to a compromise with the mum.

Inshallah everything comes out well.

this is very disturbing for anyone.....if she does not show all these tensions on her face and attitude while on air..then she is really great...hope she reconciles with her mother and all is well again.

In some more conservative societies they do not allow the ladies to move around so freely and expose their bodies. I do not know how it is in Oman though. I think the mum comes from a more conservative family compared to the dad. All this is not good for poor Asma.

Her mother should come out from 14th century. I always supported Asma. Usko gaana aata hai yaa nahi I like her. There are other besura singers in the competition, she atleast humors us.

Now I feel there is nothing wrong if her personal problem is being brought in the show, every one is doing rona gana so she should get equal opportunity as well.
