Those five minutes he spent at the tea stall, gave me some time to think about the current situation. His sudden appearance at the shop today. What if he wanted to steal from the shop? As lame as the idea sounded my expressions were lamer than that. My father made me realize this. I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn't realize my father had come to the shop 15 minutes early from his regular time. He seemed pretty tensed, but again my realization was late enough. He was already down at his knees, with my foot in his hand, he was scanning it as if it was some alien from another planet.
'How did this happen? What were you thinking? Where is that police officer? Why aren't you replying? You should go and rest at home. I'll manage the shop for today.'
POLICE OFFICER. Rang a bell in my head. And I instantly snapped out of the dizzy world that I was entrapped it.
'No baba, I'm alright. Who told you about this?'
'Chotu. He came running to the house saying DIDI is DEAD, HER FEET is DEAD. We were so scared. I came running to the shop. Your mother will also be here soon.'
Oh no! Gone were those twenty minutes with Saheb due to the stupid broken feet. I looked up at the main door of the shop, someone was standing there. Someone who was dressed in Khakhi. Someone, one look at him and I knew I was smiling. My father looked at the direction I was looking. And he was petrified on seeing Saheb at the door.
'Thankyou Saheb. You saved my daughter's life.' As if I was going to die. Anyways.
'No, no! It was because of me, that this incident happened.'
'What?' my father asked, totally confused.
'I was sitting in front of the shop waiting for it to open when she came. When she was opening the shutter, I went there to help her and due to my sudden appearance she got frightened and dropped the shutter on her foot.'
'Oh! That is your kindness that you are taking this silly girl's blame on yourself. Anyways, How can I help you now?'
'I would like to buy something from the shop, as a sorry present.'
'Oh no! no! no need Sir.'
'Please, I insist.'
'Ok then. what would you like to buy?'
'Actually, I would really feel less burden if she was the one who sold the stuff. I should say sorry to her.' He said pointing at me.
'Me?' I wondered out loud. He chuckled at my expression and nodded his head in positive.
I made my way slowly to the counter, while my father went to get the duster to clean the shop.
'What do you want Saheb?'
'Sorry?'
'Sorry, we don't sell that.'
'Okay! how about that earring you are wearing?'
'Why do you want them? They are my favorites.'
'Please.'
And I gave him those brilliant red jhumkaas with a stone that looked like ruby to him.
'How much?' he asked.
'Free.'
'No, please. Take this.' He said while handing me a five hundred rupees note.
'I bought them for fifty rupees.' I said while laughing at his stupidity.
'Its Ok. Just keep it with you. Don't put it in with the shop's money. And here is another ten rupees. If your father asks what did I buy, tell him I took this Cadbury 5 Star. Okay?'
'Okay? but why?'
'Shh.. you'll know about it soon.' And with that he left the shop.
I tucked the five hundred rupee note into the groove between my saree and waist and went back to the work I was supposed to do at the shop..
.
.
.
It was in the evening while closing the shop, I decided to free the note from my waist. My father had already left and I was free to spend some quality time after a busy day.
Taking out the note, I slowly unrolled it and was shocked to find some ink smudged on it. Flattening the note I found something scribbled on it in a very small dirty handwriting. Meet me at riverside? at 8pm. It said.
A smile breakthrough and I slowly limped my way through the broken road which lead to the river. It was still 7:50. I could reach there by 8:05 easily.
