This whole ratings thing is intriguing. I'd have imagined that our opinions are standard for the regular audience, but then why do ratings almost always end up in the other direction of the opinion of the online population.

makes perfect sense to me , i have been posting about this since this track began , this shock treatment ignoring the emotions will generate trps and viewership , it is because seeing such promo people will tune in to see what is happening, but that is like trying a coke seeing an AD ,

something new , paro proposed in public , sudden marriage etc , but then what

they are concentrating on the one time users , not sustainable cos it is a daily saop and the only way to retain trps is to retain viewers , not one time sales like coke
but okay once the trps improve , can we now have the story

sorry for being cynical , but the makers should see that they dont lose the regular viewers in this shock promo stunt

@Basantiji: agree..the story is more than marriages..but the CVs seem to be stuck in a rut..they could have got them married once Ashish got well and continued the story from there rather than the merry go round.
And with Thakursa gone for a while and Laila missing too, they need another strong antagonist
KCM doesnt cut it for me anymore..too monotonous..

@ujwala: hopefully I might be wrong, but from past experience, I feel there will be one more wedding..after Rudra realises his folly and has a (in)visible redemption...
coz this one has been done in hatred

Well duh she's obviously not the same Paro now...she went through hell and back in between the beginning and now, so why do you expect her to not have changed?

I am a reluctant critic, primarily because I can't begin to understand the massive effort and sweat that goes into the making of a show. Yet, I can't shake the feeling that many times, the voice and tone of TV producers, actors, writers echoes a self-congratulatory note, as long as the shows they make appease the baser instincts of human existence. All is well in a capitalistic, profiteering market. but with that comes death of art.

I aver that RR creative team is missing a woman's touch. This has been proven time and again by the severe deficiency of Paro's characterization, and monotonic characterization of vamps such as Laila, and KakiCumMasi.

The forced physical intimacy of the leads appears contrived. It can only evoke sexual tension in a pre-pubescent boy, who has discovered his first remotely sexual awakening. The scenes miss a grown woman's perspective. No woman likes her personal space encroached by a man, especially one she does not trust or love and even if she does, she prefers the person follow her body language and cues before forcing any touches on her.

If she is scared, you don't push her to the wall and expect her to fall head over heels in love with you. If she is aroused, you don't call her shameless and expect her to excuse you. A woman who confesses her love in public and gets equally publicly rejected, especially one who is raised in a protective and shielded world, cannot be expected to be nonchalant and persistent. Yet, we watch those scenes, and believe that in some way, its romantic and exactly what a woman would do in that situation. Then we are given justifications such as Rudra's ardent protectionism or Paro's unshaken belief in Shiv-Parvati story somehow qualify Paro, the woman, to accept her station in life and continue to convince the man of her true love, even after he accuses her of being a wanton woman.

The show never convincingly portrayed a woman's helplessness. Paro's angst and orphan status in a strange house have been more eloquently discussed in the forum. Incisive posts (by napster,NB, AyeReKhushi, FLS, tvbug, swetz, eveline to name a few) have done a fantastic job of explaining Paro, where the CVs left off. In the show, one never got to feel Paro's emotional depth and If ever her emotions were considered, they were equated with free flowing tears or naivete.

I am not saying that men are incapable of writing a woman's pov. However, a writer's nuance comes through from rich and varied experiences in life. If you've never had your heartbroken and never sensed the helplessness of a lonely woman cornered in a dark street of an unsafe neighborhood, how do you expect to capture her pain and fear? As a writer, if you have not experienced any of it, then you have to ask those who have and then hope that you can do a close approximation, if not full justice to that person's experience in your narrative.

One does not need to go far to see that stories told from a woman's perspective can be highly successful and effective. take Queen or Blue Jasmine for instance. The stories did complete justice to the listlessness of two broken women, albeit dealing with vastly different crises. Narrating Rudra's story should not compromise Paro's story, because one cannot be told with out the other. We get that Rudra has a disastrous past, but Paro herself has not been spared the pain of losing her parents. His misogyny has to affect Paro's distilled views in life otherwise, it simply shows Paro as a superhuman, or utterly insensitive. She is neither of that.

Debate is whether RR completely misses the target on a woman's perspective?

Please refrain from personal comments, attacks on any CVs, showmakers or posts, simply keep the comments directed at RR and its creative effect.

ok - off to listen to some mindless Yo Yo Honey Singh-eh!! 😉

Firstly, thank you so very much for making this post! I gave up on RR because of the same reasons that you've mentioned, & a couple of others!
The unilateral, rather linear characterisation of the women in this show makes it hard to relate to or even understand any of them! The woman with brains, KcM just HAS to be the vamp(TV stereotype, much!)! The female lead has to be so positive in her outlook that the worst of tragedies, she sails through, instead we have to see Rudra's abandonment issues, misogyny being rubbed in the viewers' faces! There's a need for balance! It cannot be a lovestory with just 1 person! Paro seems to have made a 180 degree turnaround, & is being the one to pursue(I have no issue with a woman proposing a man, except the woman & the man should be on the same page about it, not the woman suddenly dropping a Soulmates thing on the man, out of the blue) & how persistantly, at that-inconsistent characterisation, perhaps? To highlight or make the viewers empathise with Rudra, they seem to have, heavily compromised on Paro's characterisation!
@bold-Word! Two people, 1st mistaking the 2nd for a traitor of the country, & the 2nd mistaking the 1st to be her doom, her husband's murderer, cannot have physical intimacy-that's stretching even the creative liberty! The 1st one-sided mirror scene-now, that was great! It was very poignant! I'm saying romance in a lovestory is necessary, but not without any basis!
@italics-I agree with it, just as I've already mentioned!
@underlined-I agree with this, too & I have added my 2 cents, to this in the post!
I agree a woman's perspective is missing! Maybe, they should look into that!

Really interesting discussion you have going on here, SJ.

"Debate is whether RR completely misses the target on a woman's perspective?"

In one word-- yes, I think it does. And it makes no bones about it. While the promos that had aired had been of a dominant and aggressive man and a quietly resilient woman-- I have NEVER seen the kind of exposition and exploration for Paro as I have for Rudra. I've seen many insightful posts about the characters on this forum, and have enjoyed reading them too.

But the point is, why do I need a guide to understand the characters-- especially Paro? I may be exceptionally dim, but I do watch with close attention. And I already have the advantage of being a woman AND being fond of watching Sanaya on screen-- fond enough to forgive a LOT in terms of characterization and story.

So, if I had never heard of India Forums, was not particulary enamoured with Sanaya, and only watched this show on tv (like a million others do in this country), would I still be watching this show? I don't know. Maybe. More likely not.

I think Rangrasiya shows dangerously inconsistent tones. While I am all for character development-- here it's been abrupt and...well...strange. I don't follow the arc. And if the dreaded TRPs are anything to go by, neither do a lot of other people.

Yes, it's amusing to watch because I find it funny (unintentionally, I'm afraid) and because I like watching kooky Paro make macho Rudra squirm. But various things about the show DO make me very uncomfortable-- much like many other shows on desi TV.
The day the discomfort outweighs the amusement, I stop watching, and that is all.

Because it IS a capitalistic, profiteering market-- as a consumer, I don't OWE the makers anything. All I can offer is feedback and fangirling-- and that too is my prerogative. I reserve the right to withdraw it when the show tips the scale too far. Dekhna hai toh dekho indeed. Only, perhaps Mr Hegde doesn't realize that it works more in our favour than his.

So what IS 'art' anyway? Who are the 'classes' and who are the 'masses'? We all have an answer, but we don't want to say it because we'll come off sounding elitist, superiority complex ridden, and bitchy.

And that is the crux, I guess. How far do the makers WANT this to be considered 'art'?
If they want TRPs (arbitrary though they may be), the content needs to be of a certain kind. If they want critical acclaim, the content and execution need to be of another kind. It is SO rarely in India, that the two meet. And I say this about films as well. One can deride a Rohit Shetty film as much one chooses (or even a Honey Singh song)--- but they ARE laughing their way to the bank. A Queen is INCREDIBLY rare.

So when it comes back to a simple question of what sells, RR is losing. Unfortunate it is, but TRPs have been average at best. And I think that's because the makers themselves can't decide the sort of line they want to take. They fluctuate so much trying to strike that balance between TRPs and a gritty, unusual story-- in the end, appeasing neither audience. If some of us want to see a man's story, obviously a larger chunk don't. You can't really argue with that, can you? To say that 'TRP aunties' don't appreciate 'good content' and are 'regressive', is not just terribly condescending, but also feels overly simplistic. There are SO many factors at play when it comes to what plays on TV. And frankly, even if it these TRPs were accurate and gave you a greater picture of the likes and dislikes of the Indian audience at large (which one can argue, movie ticket sales do), chances are that we'd still be disappointed.

Desi tv in general treats most issues at face value and distinctly superficially. So, I am not overly surprised when I see lack of depth here. Heck, I am a superficial person who watches because the leads are good looking. And I genuinely expect nothing better.

Inspite of, or maybe BECAUSE of the sort of reach TV has, and the number of channels, the content and handling is mind-numbingly predictable.
And therefore, much like you, I choose to not take this show seriously. I choose to only laugh about it. And even then it can be frustrating. And if I tried to take this seriously, heli mhari sunle Ramji will happen.

@semanti
very nice post
the art of story telling is not in making it seem complex , but in making complex story comprehensive
any classic we take , the characters are never like us , anything like us , but it is written with conviction that you understand their action

and it is not rare , to be very frank , i dont think the writers are bad , it is this mad comparison with the neighboring show's trps that is causing the trouble
it is made bigger than it actually is
like i posted many times , i refuse to believe the channel is completely trp driven, then channels cant survive , they are evolved unlike these new production houses , they have other priorities , subscription is their major revenue , popularity driven

it is not a dead end and in which field do you get customers like in TV , everybody watches TV ,the entire globe is your audience , you make it and if you can put it across nicely you can find a target group

Queen was an extraordinary movie why?
lets see, rani she is the definition for mediocre , she is not so good looking , not confident , not strong not damaged , not daring more regular than regular can be ... how can her story be interesting

it was, how, that is extraordinary story telling such subtle and beautiful moments
that i would not expect a tele soap to do , but here we can have strong characters atleast
i feel the strength of any story is 20% story and 80% storytelling , the issue i have with RR is storytelling
most of us dont get any of the characters

PS Dekhna hai toh dekho that does the work to me same as that the word koobsurat aurat does to rudra , i get into cv bashing mode , okay jokes apart to put it simply doesnt work like that

SJ - whattay profound post ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ - did the allergies finally get to you? 😉

When I got kabootar notification about your post - I was initially reluctant to respond, given that I barely manage to catch one or two episodes a month and probably shouldn't comment. But then - lack of better sense prevailed, so here I am. 😃

This be malaise of desi TV - not just RR, and its pretty much endemic. When bitiya goes running after bitwa in her previous janam to explainiya, even after hearing "you don't have A character" - or when bitiya-in-current-janam says, "I'll stand on one leg and blow bubbles all day to prove my devotion", because she believes the object of said devotion is practically a reincarnation of Shiva - then you've pretty much jumped the shark when it comes to modern day drama. Anyone who has even the slightest concept of that new fangled notion called "equality of the sexes" will find something like this hard to rationalize, no matter how much we explain it away by saying "this is soap duniya, and dekhna hai to dekho"

The problem with that now immortal statement is that many of the people who choose to dekho get influenced by it. Tis the same reason why we rail against abuse depicted on shows, be it kalai twisting, or a roundhouse slap.

The only point I'll differ with is that it has NOTHING to do with the gender of the writers. This is more to do with what you believe, and I've seen many men write with far more sensitivity and understanding than they would get credit for, and many women who make me go "you're a prime candidate for a gender transplant" 😡

And now I gotta go write something really snarky to get over the indigestion this little post of mine has given me. 😈

Ahhh SJ, just saw this post and wanted to thank you for saying what really needed to be said. 👏 A course correction in terms of sensitivity is really the need of the hour, and especially after the last few episodes. I wonder if the CVs/Screenplay are on holiday and someone else has stepped in, actually. Can't explain Friday otherwise. 😕.

I really hate to say this but another wedding track would be probably suicidal... and "redemption" hopefully is not also an epiphany!
