Shaantanu Sachdev takes his portable coffee mug to the sink and transfers his freshly brewed morning blend from his ceramic one that shot off visible steam puffs. This morning is no different in him grabbing his morning beverage hastily and getting Darya ready for her day. Raina has been on and off her phone, making appointments and cancellations as she had taken her sick day leave from work yesterday. Maintaining relations with New York's elitist is an occupational hazard for her and its nothing new for Shaantanu.
"Daddy…!"
"Yes Munchkin…? Have you got your boots that you wanted to wear…?"
"Yuppp Daddy…! Dari gotch boottts..!" Darya exclaimed meeting him halfway in the kitchen and breakfast area.
Shaantanu got down to her level and helped her with her boots. Darya's tiny hands remained on his right shoulder even after he was done fixing the cute furry detailing around her calf. He smiled at her as he noticed it.
"What will it be for my princess…Hmm…? Pop Tarts or Hot Chocolate…?" He asked picking her up in his arms as he fixed her layered clothing. Mid Decembers in this part of the world were anything but mild.
"Hot Chocooolate…" she stretched her syllables cutely.
"I think Maria has fixed both for you…" He said carrying her in towards the breakfast table where the Rania's hired house help had fixed breakfast.
Raina's phone conversations have taken a formal turn in some matter and she has scattered official papers all over the breakfast table in search for something. Maria isn't fluent in English but she is well aware of her lady employer's nature…or maybe she isn't.
"Maama…Mommyyy…momm!" Darya was seeing Raina for the first time after last night since Shaantanu had told her that she wasn't feeling so well. Her innocent intentions only aimed to wish her mother a good morning with a hug.
Shaantanu had stepped away only momentarily to grab his patient's files and iPad from his study but he wasn't expecting to return to the scene that Raina had created on the table…Darya's hot chocolate was being absorbed by her papers…she had thrown her phone on the kitchen counter…
"What's wrong with you Dari! CAN'T YOU…"
"Raina!" Shaantanu intervened stepping up to her
Maria uses the opportunity to get Darya out of the breakfast area. She might not know much, but she understood when discretion was an absolute must for a child who was only three and a half years old.
"What?!"
"You need to calm down Raina…it's just…"
"It's not just a spill Shaan…these are my important papers…I was on the phone discussing…"
"I don't care what you were discussing Raina…!"
"Damn right! You don't…" Raina looked angrily in Shaantanu's fierce eyes.
"I don't have time for this…" He turns to leave.
"You never have time for anything but her!" She stops him.
Shaantanu walks past her, almost shoving her to the side. Raina's frustration gets taken out on the rolling tall glass of spilled hot chocolate over her papers that she picks up and hurls on the tiled kitchen floor.
Shaantanu notices Darya's labored breathing not too far in to their ride towards the Preschool. He pulls his Lexus over in to parallel parking and reaches back to her in her booster seat. He kept her emergency inhaler in his vehicle's dashboard. It's what his hand reaches for reflexively, even though his attention is 100% on her.
"Hey…hey…it's okay Munchkin…" He tries soothing his little girl while she makes use of her inhaler.
There isn't much in the world that Shaantanu Sachdev feared. His belief in goodness had diminished long back, he barely had faith in him to even consider things called "miracles", but Darya was it. He feared for her like he feared nothing else in the world. Everything had changed the moment he heard her utter the words "Daddy" to him.
"Theek hai mera Munchkin…? Hmm…?" He observed her pale face as he fixed her woolen beanie.
"Mommy mad at Dari…"
"No…no Munchkin…Mom isn't mad….she…she just…"
"Swarry Daddy…Dari sooo Shorry…"
Shaantanu reached out and caressed his daughter's cheeks. The cold weather was not the only factor responsible for her nose and cheeks turning red like tomatoes. Darya sought comfort in his father's arm as he held her close, assuring her that she hadn't done anything to be sorry for. She hadn't done anything at all.

Outside the Preschool
Armaan Malik gave his morning an early start as he insisted on driving his wife to work despite her attempts to save him the trouble. She has grown fond of walking the few blocks it took from the penthouse to get to her work place. The city had finally started to grow on her.
"Thanks…I…"
"Are wives usually always that formal…?" He questioned turning to her as she unfasten her seatbelt in his Corvette's passenger seat.
"Umm…"
"I was kidding…" He smiled fully observing Khanak's search for an answer.
She laughed conservatively, yet it made Armaan grateful for her gesture.
"I was thinking…we could do lunch…" He said overcoming his hesitations.
"Today….?"
"Yeah…12:30…?"
"Art projects…"
"Huh…?"
"With kids…we'll be doing art projects…."
"Right…so that's a "No"…"
"App voh…" She paused.
"Haan kaho…?"
"Aggar app ko bura na lagay toh, kya main app ke liye app ki pasand se Dinner bana sakti hoon…?" She spoke softly; her fluency in Hindi mesmerized him.
"Anything non-veg … grilled …with a side of…"
"Steamed vegetables…?"
"You've noticed…?"
"Yuvraaj Uncle…"
"Ahh…! My messiah…" He said in amusement. She smiled again.
"Main jaao…?"
"Yeah…" He nodded.
Khanak stepped out of the Corvette dressed in royal blue shirt dress touching her knees, her black leather boots matched up with her dress's decorative belt in the middle. She has got her over coat and woolen scarf to keep her warm against the cold. It's bound to snow later in the day.
"Hey…I…" Armaan stopped her from stepping ahead towards the Preschool entrance as he stepped out of the Corvette as well. His attire contrasted her formal wear as he had his Cornell sweatshirt and athletics pants on. The weather didn't feel cold to his native skin at all.
She turned with a curious look and waited him to walk over to her.
"Is it okay if I get the Dessert…?"
"Jee.." She nodded
"Okay…umm…Have a.."
Armaan would have wished her a good day if it wasn't for her favorite little student calling out to her.
"Miss K…!"
Armaan watches Khanak step ahead to meet two little running feet on the pavement halfway. The adorable little girl is dressed in shades of pink from head to toe. Khanak scoops her up in her arms with ease. They exchange nose nudges and bright smiles.
Shaantanu Sachdev walks up seconds later...
His mind puts facial cognition to use. He recalls, Armaan Malik.
