She was upset at Shantanu too…………who had ruffled her feathers on the wrong side………. At the wrong time …………

Shantanu entered the lift while talking to Duck on phone………
The lift opened at tenth floor and he was literally 'out-of-his-wits'…………
'What a timing'…………….he murmured to himself …………..!!!
Khanak too……… was shocked to see him in………..
'What's happening today ??!! This is the third time, I'm bumping into this unassuming, rude, insensitive and crazy guy since morning………….. But No, I am not going to spoil my evening now…………I will go to this nice movie and chill out with Sam……… then I'll think how to take care of him tomorrow………… he needs a proper lesson from me……… but not now !!"
She quietly stepped in and kept looking around at the walls of the elevator completely ignoring him. He looked at her and shrugged slightly in a 'who cares' expression and continues talking to Duck………..
While he talks to Duck totally engrossed in his own world………Khanak listens to only one side of his conversation…………….that is what Shantanu is speaking !!
Duck – I know buddy………….it can be quiet boring living all alone, especially when you are new to the city. Shaan, do tell me if you have any problem in my home…… the water is sometimes a problem……..ask Mrs. Patkar to fill it for you in case you don't get up early."
Shantanu – "Yeah………. I'll see what can I do about it………..you don't know how much I try to avoid her…….."
Duck – I understand rey yaar……this Mrs. Patkar is a crazy female…….and she has that nuisance creating cat……… keep all the doors closed…………she enters unawares and creates a mess……"
Shantanu – "I know that………….Boss……….. don't mention her………….. you can't believe it how much she has troubled me since morning…….."
Khanak ( to herself, thinking and getting irritated) – "Is he talking about me? Shameless fellow…………what a sissy ?!!...he complains to his fellas about an interaction with a female…………I feel like killing him now…….."
Oblivious to her, Shantanu continues his conversation with Duck…….
Duck – Really? She troubled you…………"
Shantanu – Don't ask what happened …………she hates me…………is after my life…… and my peace, dude…………as if I care…………I hate her too……….she is a total nuisance………..a complete 'pain in the a**'…………..I don't know how people tolerate her…………"
Duck – True there…………donno how Mrs. Patkar tolerates her and keeps her in her house. I donno how people tolerate cats, as such………..eeksss, they are so creepy…….. That is why I thought I should warn you………….she will enter the house, drink milk, will pee and do shit wherever she feels like and then you will spend the entire day cleaning the mess and the foul-smelling house………"
Shantanu ( making an ugly face with pathetic expressions) -- Arrrghhh………… … yuck !!!!………… next time she does this and I'll see to it that she gets a good kick from me…………"
Duck laughed loudly, "Beware………….Mrs. Patkar will kick you and throw you out of the building dude…"
And Shantanu laughed too at the way Duck spoke……….
Only to be startled by Khanak's, "My God, some people can be so brazen…..!!"
Shantanu looked at her, completely amused…….. shrugged and raised his eyebrows……. Trying to understand her problem…………….actually not realizing the reason for her annoyance.
He gave a confused look and said, "Are you……..by any chance………talking to me?"
"I don't see anyone else in this lift……….unless I am a witch talking to ghosts….."
He shrugged and smiled at the second proposition and turned to his phone…….
"I'll call you later buddy………….and don't worry about her………..I'll keep her in control………."
And they wished their byes………
Shantanu turned back to Khanak……..
"Now……….……………what were you saying?" he asked calmly.
"I didn't say anything………." She shrugged non-chalantly.
"Oh yes !! You said that I am brazen…………." He accused her.
"Oh yeah………..not only brazen………..but shameless……..brash……….and audacious."
"Wow !! but I was not talking to you…….. why are you after my life?"
"I am after your life????!!! It was 'you' who was so cheaply talking about me to some friend of yours…….."
He was confused and angry now…………he pushed the button to stop the lift so that the two can talk ……..
"You are day-dreaming !! 'Me'………..talking about 'you' ??…………..are you out of your mind???"
"Don't act innocent……………..I just heard what you were talking to your friend……… and what was that??...that was so down-market language…………. 'nuisance'………. 'pain-in- so and so'……… how cheap………..how can you talk like that about a girl ?"
"You are not going to decide how cheap or mannerless or brash I am………. You are soon going to watch how much 'cheap'…………..I can be……….."
"I don't need to watch anything, anymore…………….I just had a nice experience……."
He folds his palms making fists, trying to control his anger, "Gosh……………what did I do today………..to have this nightmare visiting me……."
"Nightmare?? Sure……………It's me who is suffering…………I was going for a nice movie to chill out…………but it seems my day is not good today………… why did I even think of going out?"
He smirked in anger, "Your day ??!! Nice one !! when the one who is suffering is me !! I haven't eaten anything since morning……….and here I was, thinking of having dinner at Udipi…………but you know what………….I think my day is cursed………..I might not get food if I go out……………and even if I get…………I will land up having dal with a dead, fried cockroach in it………….I'm so sure of my luck today………..It's better I go back home…………."
He pushed the button of the elevator to go up !!
"Yeah right !! You will definitely follow what I do……………as it is even I am not going for a movie now…………so bad is my day that I'm sure…………I won't get a ticket today………"
They both gritted their teeth and avoided looking at each other………waiting for the elevator to reach their own floors……….
The lift opened at tenth floor…………..she stepped out and he leaned at the door before it closed………..
He shouted at her, "You know something??... me and my friend were talking about our neighbour Mrs. Patkar's cat…………but now I feel that the poor animal is far better than you………..…..you rightly judged yourself……….that's what you are……… 'nuisance'……….'pain in the A**'……………"
She turns back with fire in her eyes………….to throw a really dirty glance at him as some of the neighbours were out in the corridor and she felt annoyed when he spoke those words in front of those teenaged girls and they giggled………
The elevator door closed and she could only swallow back the insult and her pride taken for a royal ride……………..

"Ayye Khanakdi, dinner nahi karna toh…………poha kha lo……….shaam ko banaya tha…………."
"Gangu Bai………………I am just not hungry…………" she said putting her bag slowly on the bed."
"Kya hua…………….tabiyat kharraab hai kya?"
"Nahi, Gangu Bai……………..bas thoda thak gayi hu………" she spoke dejectedly.
"Kuch khana ho toh bata dena……….." Gangu bai left after giving her instructions to put poha and food in the fridge.
Khanak lay down on the bed thinking about the day……..tears escaped her eyes as she felt hopeless and helpless…………..she had lost an important work-project………… she felt irritated…………..she had never fought with someone in her entire life………so much …….. ever…….!!!
That too with an entirely unknown person………..she didn't even know his name…….. it was just that the things started on a bad note and went on getting awful………
Her phone rang and she got up disinterested………….it was from Sam !!
"Khanak, where are you?"
"home……"
"Home ??!!!...I'm waiting outside PVR cinemas……….and you are still home !!"
"Awww………." She hit her head ashamed at her sillyness, this day was truly bad….., "so sorry Sam………..I just came back………"
"Why honey? Are you fine?"
"Yeah, I am…………….kind of………."
"What happened?" Sam spoke in a soft voice, "You were alright a while back…….. it was 'you' who made this program……."
"Yeah, I know…………..It's just that I met this guy in the lift………and………."
She was interrupted by Sam's shocked voice, "Which guy? The one you met in the morning??"
"Yeah, I met him in the evening too………….we had another fight……."
"I just can't believe this……………you cancelled your program just because of someone totally unknown to you……….whom you met in the morning for the first time and in the evening for the second time………….."
"Sam, you don't know how much he irritates me………….."
"Come'on baby, how can someone irritate you in just 2 meetings…………. You must have over-reacted………."
"I know, I did………….but I don't why………"
"You were irritated at your landlady giving you rental bills and other bills in the morning……………. At your getting late………..forgetting phone……….and not getting the assignment………….you vented out on the poor soul………."
"Sam, I don't know why I feel so charged up when I see him………..he stimulated me to fight with him….."

"You usually don't fight so much………..you are a sweet soul……….. go and patch up with him………"

"Go Khanak…………….patch up sweetly…………..apologise for your behaviour……. It will give peace to you and lift your spirits ………….. and then take some rest……… ……you'll be fine by morning…………."
Sam disconnected after some more talk……..
'Patch up !!………………….sure !!…………..I know what will give peace to me…… and lift my spirits………..'

Shaan was completely tired and exhausted…………..sitting on the couch and wondering what he should cook to feed himself…….
This had been the worst day since he came to Mumbai………….in fact, the worst day of his life………….
He was trying to ward off negative thoughts and took few deep breaths………..
After some time, he heared the doorbell ring and opened the door to be shocked to see Khanak on the door !!
He became speechless for a while as it was completely unexpected to see her at the door at nearly 10.00 pm in the night………
After regaining composure, he softly murmured, "Err…………….You !!"
She smiled sweetly with an apologetic look on her face……….
"Hi……….." she spoke as sweetly as she could.
"How do you know that I live here…??"
"Actually, you said that you were talking about your neighbour Mrs. Patkar's cat…….. so I guessed this place as your home as this floor has only 3 flats……… one is Mrs. Patkar's………..other is Pooja's home……..she's my friend……….so I know her…….. so the third flat here is this…………but Dakshish lives here…………are you his friend?"
"Yeah, I am his friend………..came from Delhi, 1 week back……….smart of you to guess my home………"
She smiled proudly, "Thanks !! And…………….."
"And……….??" He waited for her answer.
"I'm really sorry for misunderstanding you…………..I was very eccentric………."
"No, it's fine…………..it's alright……….." he spoke confused………..he didn't expect her to apologise after the words he spoke to her before the lift door closed…….
He was in fact expecting another huge fight !!!
"I'm really sorry…………..I behaved very badly………"
"It's fine…………..even I was rude to you……….." he spoke still confused………… he couldn't believe that he saw a 180 degree turn in her………….and was now feeling sorry as he felt that even he behaved badly. He was well mannered and was generally very chivalrous and polite when with girls.
"No, you have to say that you forgave me…………..I apologise sincerely."
"See, there is no need for apology……………I behaved eccentric too………it was very immature…….." he spoke softly.
They still stood at the door.
"You said you haven't eaten since morning………..you cancelled going out for dinner too……….I will think that you forgave me if you take this poha………..I brought for you………."
She took out a small steel tiffin box and gave it to him.
He looked at her completely confused…………..unable to understand her motives.
'There is something, that is fishy……………how come 'Queen Victoria' became 'Princess Nightingale'…………' he thought to himself.
He reluctantly took the box……..
"Are you sure, you didn't mix something in this poha?" he asked jokingly.
She appeared confused, "Yeah, I mixed 'kanda' and 'bhujiya'…….."
He laughed, "No, I meant some laxative………..poison…….??"
"No…………..Gosh !!" she was embarrassed, "I'm not 'that' mean……."
"Thank God………….I will trust you and eat it……….thanks…..!!"
"No problem…….."
She kept standing…………..he kept standing too !!
He finally raised his eyebrows, "Anything else?"
"I wanted that 'dabba' back………….you know my landlady is a bit strict……if you can empty the poha in a plate…………"
"Oh sure !!" he turned towards the kitchen………
Relaxed that he had gone inside leaving Khanak at the door…………Khanak lowered the bag she was carrying……………….
And released Mrs. Patkar's small cat in Shantanu's drawing room…… ………which went ahead and comfortably made home on the couch !!!
