Part Nineteen: Hona Tha Pyaar

Manali: 8:00 AM

Adi was busy fixing up his shop before he opens the door for the weekly sale; he was in extra early as there was no reason to linger in an empty house with his Chutki's infinite memories all over the place. He avoided staying in his empty home as much as he can because he knew that he didn't have enough courage to face the stillness to the place that was once peaceful and alive.

He had thought about Khanak and Shaantanu multiple times ever since the day they both left town. Their gang from the University also came by asking for them and all he could say was that they were gone for now and had no intentions of returning for the time being. Sir.Shekhar was the only person whom Shaantanu informed before leaving for Delhi. Although Shekhar was a bit confused at his refusal for Mumbai which had one of the nation's greatest record labels, he didn't question him any further once he revealed that he was leaving with Khanak. Their phone conversation had lasted only a few minutes before Shaantanu hung up from the post office where he was faxing the signed contract to Delhi.

Adi and the other employees at the shop were bombarded with clientele soon after they flipped the open sign on the door. As the only store manager Adi interacted with several customers around the store without limiting himself to one area, keeping busy all the time until Mohit informed him of his phone call in the back office.

"Kaun hain Mohit?" he questioned wondering who could be at this time as he was not expecting any calls.

"Pata nahi…lakin shayad Mumbai ka number hain…"

The first thing that came to his mind was Khanak and Shaantanu but before his thoughts could linger on aimlessly he picked up the receiver and answered.

"Hello…?"

"Additiya Mathur main Sunil Khandelwal bol raha hoon..Shaan kahaan hain?"

"Jee…?"

"Save the pretense Mathur…I need to know where my son is…"

"Sir main nahi jaanta voh kahaan hain…Mumbai mein he…"

"Voh yahaan hota toh main iss phone call per apna aur tumhara time waste nahi karta…"

"Lakin voh yahaan bhi nahi hain Sir…I don't know.."

"Toh phir tumhari behn toh hogi na…uss ko bataya ho ga uss ne, mujhe usse khud baat karni hogi…phone number…"

"Nahi Sir…Khanak bhi nahi hain Manali mein…"

"Kya.! Do you mean to say that tumhay apni khud ki behn ka kuch pata nahi hain?"

"Jee nahi…abb voh meri zindagi ka hissa nahi hain…Shaantanu jahaan bhi hain voh uss ke saath hain..."

"How irresponsible of you Additiya! Tum ne apni behn ko itni asaani se jaane diya…mere careless betay per blindly trust kar ke tum ne bahut bari galti ki hai..."

"Shayad ki hain…lakin iss mein app kay betay ki puri marzi shaamil thi…"

"Voh jazbaati hain per tum toh…"

"Please Sir…galti kar denay ka blame de chukay hain app aur isse agay apnay flaws mein main koi aur addition nahi karna chahta..."

"Tum chahtey toh ussay rook saktey thay…"

"Nahi…jub aik bahi ho kar rook nahi saka toh phir kuch din ka dost ya employer ban kar Shaantanu ko kaise rook leta…"

"Kamzoor ho tum Additiya…bahut kamzoor…!"

"Haan bahut kamzoor…" He hangs up after silently agreeing with Sunil Khandelwal declarative tone. New roots of doubts and suspicions were planted in his mind as he stared at the receiver on the phone. Where were they if not in Mumbai?

Delhi: 12:00 PM in Sadar Bazaar

"Shaantanu yeh couch mujhe pasand hain…app isse final kar de…"

"Nahi Khanak yeh itna odd sa hain..half metal type and half weird cushion like…kuch aur dekho na…"

"Nahi yeh perfect hain living area kay liye…" She had already checked around the crowded furniture shop and was convinced that it was the right choice within their budget. Shaantanu was least bothered about the price tag because he didn't want her to worry.

"Tum nahi mano ge meri baat…dekho beht kar dekh lo aik baar..." He pulls her by her shoulders and makes her sit on the small couch with dark brown iron skeleton and huge coffee colored cushions. She feels the softness and leans back; Shaantanu joins her as she closes her eyes while resting her head for a moment.

"Shaantanu perfect hain…! app iss per beht kar apni puray din ki thakaan bhool jaaye gay…" She had no idea he was already sitting next to her as she still had her eyes closed. He smiled softly at her serene expression and then leaned in closer just in time for her to feel his presence and open her eyes.

"Khanak aggar tum mere saath ho na toh phir meri har mushkil, har thakaan khud he durr ho jaaye gi…"

"Main aap ke saath ho Shaantanu hameesha and forever…!" She placed her hand on his and held it tightly before continuing with "…main bhi aur abb se yeh perfect couch bhi…please final kar le…" She pouted cutely as Shaantanu shook his head amazed at her transition from intensity to cuteness within the last few seconds.

"Fiineee! Lakin voh dresser jo tumne peechay choora hain voh bhi add kar de gay…"

"Shaantanu voh bahut expensive hain…fazool mein…"

"Dekho yeh tumhari pasand hain aur voh meri…dresser acha hain, uss kay saath voh lamps bhi free hain…"

"Lamps ka double charge unho ne dresser ki price mein jo add kar diya hain…" She rolled her eyes and folded her arms in protest.

"Wifey samjha karo na… yeh bechaare bhi toh apna business kar rahay hain na…"

"Toh iss mein humari kya galti hain…app inn se keh kar thodi aur bargaining kar le…"

"Khanak yeh sub installments mein lena hain humay iss liye price toh final hogi… aur phir 6 months mein sub payments ho jaaye gi… "

Shaantanu finally got Khanak to agree with the whole installment plan for the furniture they had bought from the small but reasonable store in the market. The salesman promised to deliver and settle everything in the apartment the following day.

They spent the rest of the afternoon shopping for various things off the small stalls where Khanak could easily bargain for crockery and decorative items like wall art, pottery, and rugs. Shaantanu had never seen the smart shopper side of his wife before; she was a pro at getting her way when people tried to convince her for a higher or an unfair rate. He simply watched and helped her pick out things which will adorn their home.

"Thank God! Finally hum ghar aagaye…" Shaantanu sighed in relief as they entered their apartment around five in the evening.

"App yeh saarey shopping bags ko yahi side per rakh kar fresh hojaye main kuch khaane kay liye dekhti ho..subah kitchen ka saara samaan toh humne set bhi kar diya tha…"

"Aik minute ko tehro toh sahi Khanak…meray saath behto na… please…" He pulls her by her tiny wrist and she lands in his lap perfectly. The huge rocking chair that came with the half furnished apartment was her favorite and now she loved it even more as she threw her arms around him and lost herself in his intense eyes.

Her simplistic beauty was like a spell to which he had already surrendered himself to. He watches her turn red in his arms and the close proximity in which they are makes her a bit nervous. She is currently biting the corner of her rosy lips completely unaware of all sorts of different thoughts going through his head as he watches her intently. He inches closer and she feels her heart thud in her thoracic cavity. Her hair falls on her face as he intentionally rocks the chair back, wanting her hold on to him tightly, never letting go and she does.

For a moment they both feel nothing but their rhythmic breaths that were taken in synchronization, resembling the way he strums his guitar for the beginning of a slow song. They let it sink in; proclaiming everything in this moment as theirs. His lips brush past her left cheek and she tightens her grip on him again. His eyes are open but hers are closed, she is in the process of imprinting every little movement in her temporal lobe. Her first kiss with the man who had loved her unconditionally with his whole heart and would be the only one to practice this right for as long as she lived; it was a moment captured in time.

Their lips moved over one another in a slow steady passing. It was as if they were getting to know each other again. She felt his other hand move to her back to bring them even more closely together. She felt his tongue slowly swipe against her lips and she opens her lips gently, granting him all access. His grip around her remains tight as she feels extremely comfortable in his lap. He felt her slip his bottom lip into her mouth and nibbled on it gently. She then sucked on it to soothe him before breaking from their first intimate exchange as husband and wife.

P.S
: I am super bad at describing "mushy" moments..this kiss took so much effort...LOL...I hope it wasn't a disappointment and emotions were conveyed correctly...Enjoy reading! and comment at your convenience please!

Part Twenty: Jaane-e-man

Delhi: 10:30 AM

Khanak is busy instructing the furniture delivery guys to place certain things in a certain style instead of just plopping them down all over the place. It takes her about an hour to get everything moved and settled around the apartment. She wonders where Shaantanu has disappeared to as she had not seen him since he went downstairs to instruct the furniture guys up to their apartment from the main gate.

"Pata nahi kahaan chale gaye Shaantanu…naashta bhi adhoora reh gaya iss sub ke chakkar mein.." She talks to herself as she moves about the kitchen, placing the plates and dirty dishes in the sink. Her tea remains on the counter for her to drink as she works.

Shaantanu had gone across the street to the nearest bank after paying the furniture delivery guys their delivery fee. His balance was now only half of what he had received in his advance check from the Music Company which he was sure would be enough to get them through the rest of month, until he gets his next check. Nevertheless, he withdrew 500 from the ATM to keep it for just in case situations and for anything that they might need. While walking back to the apartment he thinks back to the time when he never cared for how much was available in his account or how much he took out from it, the balance was always enough for his spending as it was funded almost weekly by Sunil Khandelwal. The value for money had never been so clear cut for Shaantanu now that had absolutely no one to fund him generously or overlook his free style spending. Times have changed for Shaantanu just as he had changed for them.

"Khanak… kahaan ho main ghar agaaya…?" He questions walking in through the door and looking around the newly furnished living and dining area. It looked simply stunning as Khanak had already placed in several of the interior dcor items and rugs they had bought from the market earlier.

"Jee…main yahaan ho..bedroom mein.. aur app ki chai table per hain maine phir se garam kardi thi…" she calls out from their room as she is busy dusting the new dresser and placing their clothes in the huge drawers it came with.

He walks in their room with the tea mug in his hands and observes his wife from the door frame on which he is leaning on. She is wearing a white chikan kurta and navy blue churidaar, her tie-and- dye white and navy blue dupatta is laying carelessly on their bed and her hair is pulled back in a messy bun while she is surrounded with boxes and bags all over their room. The dusting rag remains in her hand even as she moves to place in their stuff in the drawers. She was completely immersed in her chores while he was immersed in her and only her.

"Vaise main abb itni bhi achi nahi lag rahi kay app vahaan pichle panch minute se kharay kharay dekhay ja rahay hain…" She smiled looking up at him while folding one of his shirts. Somehow she always knows when his eyes are on her.

He places his empty mug on the small side table by their bed and then walks through bags and boxes to reach her as she continues to work, trying hard to remain unaffected by his presence. He helps her fold some of her clothes and then as she reaches out her for them so that she could place them in the drawer he refuses to let her have them and instead he pulls her closer to him by tugging her wrist gently.

"Tumhay kaam kartey huye itna acha lag nay ki ijazzat bilqual nahi hain Khanak…main kabhi bhi Wifey ki koi help nahi kar paao ga if this continues…" He plays with one of her small oval shaped earrings and then tucks in an intruding hair strand behind her left ear while concluding his complaint against her simplistic beauty. She blushes badly and tries to hide it by lowering her gaze from him but he is already familiar with the crimson that has settled on her face.

"Itni saari sharam?? Khanak kuch baad kay liye bhi toh…" before he could finish his sentence she places her fingers on his lips, stopping him abruptly but he still smiles even as her fingers try their level best to keep his lips from moving any further.

"Aap kabhi bhi kuch bhi bolte hain Shaantanu…"

"Aur tum kabhi bhi aur abhi bhi itna he sharma jaati hoon…lakin bahut pyaari lagti ho."

"Acha abb kuch kaam karay…?" she tries to get back to work but he is still staring at her dreamily.

"Kaam?..ajj toh meri chutti ka akhri din hain phir kal se mein kaam per he hoga aur tum yahaan ghar per…" hearing him say that she becomes a little sad and he knows that look on her face.

"Hmm…"

"Khanak main sirf din mein kaam per honga…aur lunch kay liye bhi vaapis ajao ga…"

"Nahi Shaantanu baat voh nahi hain…I just…app yahaan per akele.."

"Akela…? Kya tum nahi ho meray pass…mere saath?"

"Main toh app ke saath hameesha ho aur rahogi Shaantanu…aur umeed karti ho app iss bharosay ko sirf humari khushi tak limit nahi karay ge…har mushkil mein aur har dukh mein bhi app mujhay apne saath paaye ge…" she caresses his cheek lovingly as she feels moisture build up in her eyes. He holds on to her hand and presses his face against her palm and smiles.

The rest of the time until lunch was spent fixing up the cluttered bedroom and putting up wall art that they had bought for the living area as well their bedroom. The new mattress had new sheets and pillows to go along with, and the comforter which she had bargained at almost 50% off complimented the simplicity with which she had decorated the entire place. Towards the end the place looked like a small piece of heaven that was perfect for their new beginning together.

"Vaise Khanak yeh sub toh set hain…per iss opposite wall ke liye do aur painting ya koi aur wall dcor type cheez cahiyay ho gi…" Shaantanu called out from the living room as Khanak went inside the bedroom, he could see her back from where he was stranding as the bedroom door was open, she seemed to be searching for something in her already empty suit case.

"Nahi Shaantanu meray pass pehlay se hain aik perfect cheez…"
"Really Wifey? Aisi kaun si cheez hain jisse maine tumhay bargain kartey huye nahi dekha.." he asks walking up to her in their bedroom but she doesn't answer him back.

Shaantanu notices she is holding on to two picture frames, one with his entire family's picture which was taken after the Opening Festival in Manali and the other frame that held her and Adi's picture that she picked up off the wall before departing from her childhood home.

"Kitni achi picture hain na Shaantanu…? iss mein Papa, Maa, Daadi, Khusboo Bhabhi aur Akshay Bahiyaa sub saath mein hain…kitnay achay lag rahay app ke saath yun kharay huye…"

"Pata nahi Khanak…mujhe toh sirf Adi bahiyya ki tasveer nazar arahi hain…unki voh ankhein jin mein tumhare liye bahut saara pyaar hain…voh hansi jo tumhari vajah se unn ke cheray per thi…mujhay toh yeh tasveer zayaada achi lag rahi hain…"

"Shaantanu kya abhi bhi app sub se naraaz hain…?"

"Nahi Khanak…kyunki naraaz honay ka haq toh sirf unko diya jaata hain jo apne ho…mujhay toh Dad ne hameesha se alag rakha...pehle khud se aur bee mujhe Mom aur Daadi se bhi alag kar diya…" He said grimly looking down at the perfect family portrait that was no longer around for their blessings and support.

"Lakin Maa aur Daadi toh app se bahut pyaar karti hain…app ke har faisle per app ka saath deti aayi hain…"

"Haan aur isse liye main har rooz unhay yaad karta hoon…unko har chooti se chooti baat ko jis ne mujhay iss kabil banaya ke main khud ko sambhal sako…aik acha insaan ban sako kyunki Dad was never around…unhay time nahi tha aur mujhay iss baat ka koi farq nahi parta tha…"

"Kya abb Papa humay kabhi maaf nahi karay gay…?"

"Kya humne koi galti ki hain Khanak…? Ya phir Adi Bahiyaa ne tumhay meray saath behj kar koi galti ki hain…? jub hum mein se kissi ne kuch galat kiya nahi hain toh phir maafi ka koi reason nahi banta…I could never understand Dad…voh baray hain per dil dukhane ka haq unhay nahi hain…kissi ko bhi nahi hain Khanak.." He turned away as he concluded his thought with a shaky voice. Khanak could clearly feel the pain in his tone and the way he had turned away from her.

She places both pictures down on the bed and walks over to him, puts her arms around him from behind, wanting to soothe him gently. Her healing touch was his remedy.

"Adi bahiyaa ne koi galti nahi ki Shaantanu…na unhone aur na humne…main jaanti ho humaray baray hum dono se thode naraaz hain… per main yeh bhi jaanti hoon kay aik na aik din unka ghussa khatam hojaaye ga…hum apne pyaar se unka dil jeet le gay..thoda time lagay ga per aik din voh loog humaray saath hongay aur hum unkay.." Her grip tightens on him as he sighs and holds on to her hands that reached half way around his broad chest. Her support and determination held him together and he was able to feel whole yet again in her embrace.

He picks up the frame which held Adi Bahiyaa and Khanak's photograph and she holds on to the one with her smiling in-laws as they both walked over to the empty wall in the living area. It was centered in a way that it could be seen from any corner of their studio like living, dining, and kitchen area. He places both pictures on the wall, making sure they are positioned correctly and when she gives him thumbs up after double checking from a distance he moves back and looks at photographs with a small smile; she joins him soon after placing the hammer and the tool box on the counter. They stood staring up at the photographs together in their newly settled apartment. His left arm was wrapped around her shoulders as both of hers went around his waist, their home finally looked complete with this new addition.
