Manali Hill Station and Modern-day Mumbai

Characters

Shaantanu (Shaan) Khandelwal: The youngest and most loved member of the respected Khandelwal household. His presence and personality lights up the entire house with laughter and smiles no matter what the occasion is. To sum it all up, he is adored by his mom and daadi, pampered by his big bro and bhabhi, but when it comes to the senior man of the house a.k.a Mr. Sunil Khandelwal, he better be at his best behavior or else'Overall an Intelligent, Handsome, talented, and a self-made individual who follows his pure heart in every decision he makes.

Sunil Khandelwal (Dad): A man of rules and regulations, he is stern and crisp in attitude as he believes that life should never be taken for granted, no matter how successful or privileged you are. After the death of his father at a very young age, he took on the responsibility of his family (mother and a sister) and since then he has been the sole support of the Khandelwal clan. Respects his mother a lot and loves his wife in a very traditional sense, he is also super protective of his loved ones, especially his sons. His anger is superficial because at the end of the day he is a soft-hearted, traditional, family man.

Madhavi Khandelwal (Mom): Loving, caring, "the world's best mom" according to Shaan. She is super cool when it comes to keeping up with youngsters and their trends, her approach of being both, a friend and a parent to her children has kept her very close to Akshay and Shaan. Even though she is a mother-in-law to Khusboo, she has never been the traditional "saas" to her and loves her just like her own daughter. Madhavi is also very close to her own mother-in-law and just like Sunil she respects her very much.

Daadi: Sunil's Mother (Maa): eldest and most respected member of the Khandelwal clan. She is very loving and caring towards her grand children as well as her children. Even though she has earned the title of "Daadi" in the household, her age can never stop her from being an advocate for Shaan's mischief and covering for him when she senses trouble from Sunil or anyone else for that matter. A total sweetheart who wants nothing but bliss for her family and loved ones

Akshay and Khusboo Khandelwal: Just got married recently and being a part of love/arrange marriage they have nothing to complain about as a couple. Akshay is more serious when it comes to work and business but for Khusboo's sake he tries to lighten up a bit and learn a few tricks from his younger bro or "chote". Khusboo might seem a bit self-absorbed at times, but she truly is a nice-hearted person and loves being loved by her husband and his family.

Khanak Mathur (Chutki): A chirpy, full of life girl, she has got her traditions and morals grounded in her every simple act. Khanak was orphaned at a very young age and since then her older brother Aditiya or Adi was her only family. He became her mother and father, not only taking on the responsibility of her necessities but making sure that Khanak's education and dreams face no hardship. Adi started to work as a store clerk at a family friend's clothing store to save up and provide for Khanak's better future. Even though Adi never got the chance to finish up his education he was skilled at what he did and was now the manager of the store where he started as a clerk. Khanak was well aware of Adi's sacrifices and considered him her guardian angel through thick and thin. Khanak was hardly two years of age when her parents died, she doesn't remember, much but Adi's encouragement and a positive attitude towards life kept her from disappointments and isolation.

Aditiya Mathur (Adi/Bahiya): Protective older brother of Khanak, considers his sister his life and will do anything for her. He realizes that he is not very well off but their middle-class status is comfortable enough to live a respectable life. Life's tribulations tested him but he never gave up the will power and the promise that he made to himself in regards to Khanak on the day of that horrible accident that made him a responsible man way before his time. His parents passed away in that accident and he still holds that tragedy responsible for what he is and where he is in life, both in a positive and a negative way. Overall a very kind and collective individual but carries a burdensome soul and is afraid of losing his stability as the only provider and caretaker of his "Chutki" a.k.a Khanak.

Part One: Meri Duniya

Setting: Manali, Mathur household's living room where Khanak is seated with her diary and pen on a fine Sunday Morning…

…Manali aik choota sa per bahut he khoobsurat Hill Station hain, Yahaan aksar loog apni vacations aur sardi ka khass maza lenay aatey hain, per meray liye toh Manali is a piece of heaven on earth. Yeh vohi jannat hain jo maine aur meray sub se pyaare Adi Bhaiya ne apni liye khud banai hain. Kehnay ko toh voh isse humari jannat kehtay hain per humaray iss chotay se ghar mein har aik cheez sirf unki mehnat ki hain aur yeh baat sirf unke paisoon ya par-roll tak limited nahi hain kyunki Adi Bahiya ki mehnat ki vajah se he ajj unki Chutki, yani main Khanak Mathur apnay college ki Top student jani jaati hon. Kahir abb aggar main yahaan Bahiya ki baatein aur tareefein likhnay mein busy hogaye toh Sunday ka breakfast acha khasa jal jaayega aur main voh pehli larki hongi jo khass Jalivi (burned) Chai bananay kay liye jaani jaati hain…Write to you soon..."

"Adi Bahiya!! Breakfast ready hain…" Khanak exclaimed pouring out garam-a-garam Chai for Adi and herself in her favorite Mugs for her special Sunday morning breakfast.

"Chutki main araha hoon…Tu itna chila nahi puray muhalay ko utha degi…" Adi replied coming out of the bathroom with his towel around his neck.

"Bahiya bhi na, sara waqt kuch na kuch…behn ko chor kar puray muhalay ki fikhar hain…" Khanak muttered placing her favorite marmalade on the lightly toasted bread. Adi emerged from his room as she placed it on her plate.

"Morning Bahiya!"

"Oye, good morning toh tab hota jub meri Chutki mujhay apni sweet awaz mein jagati, par abb toh mujhay lagta hain kay tumhara loud speaker meray aur humaray neighbors kay kaan kharaab kar kay he rahay ga." Adi settled himself across the table and started on his breakfast with a witty remark that annoyed his sister like always.
Mumbai: Khandelwal House

"Akshay I don't think Shaan kuch galat keh raha hain…" Khusboo said defending her sweet devar as her husband paced around the room tensed.

"Kushboo tum smajh kyun nahi rahi… Aggar Shaan chala gaya then things will get worse here…he just wants to run away from Dad aur tum jaanti ho kay Dad doesn't want that even if he show no apparent care for Shaan." Akshay replied in frustration, hoping Kushboo would be on his side and not on the ladlay(favorite) "Chotey" of the house.

"Akshay tum jaantay ho that this is not the first time Shaan aur Dad ka argument hua ho…In fact agar voh yahaan se nahi gaya toh these so called "little" arguments will turn into fights…and Dad ka ghussa aur meray pyaare devar kay emotions kabhi bhi acha end result nahi de saktey…it will be lethal to the entire Khandelwal house." Khusboo analyzed the situation, persisting her approach like always.

Akshay sighed taking a seat next to his wife. He looked over at her and tried his level best to get convinced by her smile and the argument she was making. Although, Kushboo's idea was not the desirable solution but Akshay knew that it would help to cool things down a bit.

The reason behind Akshay and Kushboo's discussion was Shaantanu Khandelwal's heated argument with Sunil Khandelwal, who was hell bent on getting his son into a graduate MBA program so that he could join the business empire and hopefully takes over one of the companies. Shaan was intelligent and driven, he took up business as his major because Akshay had convinced him in making their Dad proud, but at the same time he signed up for Music and Theory composition as his other Major. It was apparent that he wanted to make Sunil proud but he knew very well that his heart was in to music and nothing could change that. He was getting outstanding grades as a business major but he valued his Music theory classes more because he felt he could explore and expand on something that made him feel alive. Something he really looked forward to without being dependent on good marketing and advertising books. This wasn't the first time he shared a difference in opinion with his own father, however it was the first time Sunil Khandelwal found out about his enrollment in Music and Theory Composition and double majors.

"Daadi, kya Dad kabhi nahi maanay gay?" Shaan questioned the one person who always gave him unconditional support no matter how angry her own son got with Shaan.

"Pata nahi Shaantanu beta…per iss baar toh Sunil kuch zaayada he naraaz ho gaya hain, voh bhi sirf iss baat par kay meray Shaan ne apni pasand ka subject choose kiya lakin yeh nahi samajh raha kay Business ki pharai bhi toh saath mein kar he raha hain… "Daadi pondered over the situation aloud as she sat by Shaan and consoled him gently.

"Daadi mujhay app jaanay de na please…" Shaan pleased holding on to her hands, trying to gain some approval for his cause.

"Beta mujhay teray jaanay per koi aiteraaz nahi hain per…"

"Daadi abb app bhi "per" aur "kyun" jaise kharaab words use karay gee..? Maine toh soocha tha kay app meri side par ho aur mujhay Manali jaanay mein help karoge…" Shaan pouted folding his arms and turning away from his beloved Daadi.

"Haan toh main apnay Chotey ki side pe he toh hoon, Sunil ki side per hoti toh yahaan teray pass naho hoti…par aik baat mujhay batao, yeh Manali mein aisa kya hain jo Mumbai jaisay baray aur achay shehr main nahi…tu kyun jana chahta hain vahaan jub teri Mumbai ki university itni achi hain…" Daadi questioned looking up at her tall grandson who was still pouting like a child.

"Kyunki vahaan par aik bahut well known music teacher rehtay hain…voh pehlay Mumbai mein hi hotay thay par yeh shehr unhay kuch acha nahi laga issi liye voh Manali chalay gaye aur vahaan ki
University mein professor bhi hain, but this semester voh music ki aik class offer kar rahay hain, sirf aik semester kay liye. Afterall, voh bahut zaayda overprotective hain music aur apnay talent ko lekar, voh yeh sub commercialize nahi karna chatay, unhay lagta hain kay humari generation music ko bahut light heartedly leti hain…aur main aisa bilqual nahi soochta…" Shaan explained his reasoning to Daadi who took in each and every word in slowly while being amazed by Shaantanu's devotion to music.

"Arey Vah! mera Chota sangeet se itna pyaar karta hain, mujhay toh yeh pata he nahi tha… Per Manali jaake tum itnay kathore Ustaad ko akelay impress kaise kar paao gay? Aur kahein vahaan un se koi ulti seedhi baat kehdi toh phir kya hoga?" Daadi jumped to conclusion like always and Shaan started to smile at his very own gullible grandmother.

"Daadi main aisa kuch nahi karnay waala…main toh bus un se kuch sheekh na chahta hoon…thoray din kay liye he sahi, itnay famous aur jaanay huye teacher ka student hona meray liye kitnay baray honor ki baat hogi yeh sirf main he samajh sakta hoon…Main nahi jaanta Dad ko kyun yeh sub itna bura lag raha hain…jis tarah business ki internship kay liye U.S gaya tha, ussi tarah aggar main music kay liye kuch din Manali chala jao toh what's the big deal?" Shaan expressed his frustration as he settled himself on his bed while Daadi finally understood his point.

"Toh theek hain, tumhari yahaan se jaanay mein main tumhari full maddad karogi…Abb Sunil ki aik nahi suno ge aur tujhay Manali bhej kar he raho ge…!" Daadi declared with determination and walked out of Shaan's room after giving him a confident smile as he stood up and hugged his favorite person at the moment.

Back in Manali…
Khanak and Adi are grocery shopping in an open market, the search for the freshest tomato and leafiest bundle of Spinach is their top priority at the moment…

"Madamje yeh app ko isse sasta nahi millay ga…puray 2 kilo voh bhi sirf 50 rupees mein." The veggie vendor exclaimed as he claimed his deal to be the best in the entire market.

"Acha, abhi do din pehlay toh app mujhay yeh 20 rupees mein 1 kilo de rahay tahy phir achanak ne 5 rupees bhara diye…tum aik stable rate nahi rakh saktey, jub dekho upar neechay kartay rehtay ho..hmmph!"

"Toh do din mein toh bahut kuch badal jata hain, aur vaisay bhi Manali ki sub se achi sabzi meri he hoti hain." Vendor announced setting off Khanak's switch to get angry at his arrogance.

"Dekho mujhay yeh subzi ghar jaakay pakani hain koi ramp per modeling nahi karwani iss se… main yeh 1 kilo he longi aur voh purana rate he doonge…samjhay!" Khanak made her final decision and handed her choice of tomatoes to the vendor who was fuming in anger but knew that she was not going to change her mind even if he tried to convince her otherwise.

"Haan aur voh adha kilo hari mirchi bhi dena.."

"Khud kisi mirchi si kum nahi hain phir bhi hari mirchi kay peechay pari hain…" the vendor mutter under his breath as Khanak looking suspicious of his muttering.

"Yeh kya bola tumne? Bulao main Adi bahiyaa ko, akay khoob khabar lay gay tumhari…" Khanak warned startling the vendor.

"Nahi madam je…kuch bhi toh nahi…yeh lo app ki sabzi, aur maine kuch nimbo yunhi daal diyay hain…app kay kaam aaye gay, aur Adi Bahiyaa ko meri taraf se poochna… yeh lo…" He said handing over her groceries trying divert her attention as he knew of Adi's well respected reputation in the town.

"Hmm..agaye na abb line par…khair choro…yeh lo tumharay puray 50 rupees sub cheezoon kay…agli baar jub aoogay toh taaza gobi saath lekay aana… ajj itni taaza nahi hain issi liye nahi larahi hoon…" Khanak smiled handing over his money and taking the bags in return

"Jee acha madam jee…shukriya!" The vendor thanked Khanak and smiled in return.

"Hmm, abb yeh Adi Bahiyaa kahan gaye…meray fresh aur laal tematar unki rukhi aur sukhi palak ki band na baja de iss kahin nazar nahi arahay hain… Per Khanak tu tension kyun le rahi hain iss grocery trip ka "sub se achi deal award" toh tujhay he milay ga…" Khanak thought to herself as her eyes roamed around the market searching for her dearest brother.

They would always split up in the market so that more could be done in little time, but as always they had planned to meet up at the corner cafe where the winner of the "best deal" could have anything from the caf on the expense of the loser. This was Adi and Khanak's own made up tradition that might seem silly to many people but it was one of the best moments of their week and the ultimate highlight of a well spent Sunday.

Back to Mumbai… Late at Night

"Shaan are you sure beta kay itnay kafi hongay?" Madhavi whispered handing over some money to Shaan, she was being Daadi's advocate for helping Shaantanu escape to Manali. After much debate and discussion all day Sunil was not willing to agree upon anyone's request. His answer was "NO" and it would have remained a big fat "NO" no matter what, and so Madhavi and Daadi decided to execute mission "Escape to Manali" for Shaantanu in the late night hours.

"Yeah Mom, yeh kafi se zaayada hain aur main Manali tak he jaraha hoon, it's a small town, vahaan itni zaroorat honi toh nahi cahiyay…and I have got my card" Shaan whispered hugging his mother thankfully.

"Shaan tum jaantay nahi ho Sunil ko kya…kal sham tak tumhara credit card cancel karwa cukhay hongay voh…iss liye main tumhay cash de rahi hoon…aur vahaan pooch kar meray cell per aik ring zaroor dena okay.." Madhavi said as she watched his son picked up his duffle bag and guitar off the floor.

"Okay Mom time to bid me adieu…Daadi ko meri taraf se aik baar phir hug kar dena...aur please sub sambhal lena, I know mujhay kuch kehnay ki zaroorat nahi hain kyunki I know you are the world's BEST Mom! And I Love You!"

"Love you too beta…now go and apna bahut kahyaal rakhna…" Madhavi smiled and waved her son good-bye knowing that as a mother she had done the right thing by supporting Shaan for his cause.

Shaan smiled back at her and then turned to walk towards the front door of the beautiful Khandelwal mansion. He was a little sad for leaving under such circumstances but with his Mom and Daadi as his supporters he felt confident of his decision. He knew Sunil would forgive him once he realizes that he is really passionate about music and if he could understand that then maybe he'll be proud of his accomplishments as well. Shaan had no problem helping out with business but he just wished that Sunil could accept him as the son who can handle both his music and business without having to pick one out of the two. As he walked away from his house he made a promise to himself that upon his return he would make his father understand his perspective so that he could feel pride in him just as he does when he looks at his accomplished and successful older son Akshay Khandelwal.

Part Two: Manzilein

A cold and frosty morning around zero degree welcomed a new day in Manali, the overnight frost on the frozen grass gave off a shimmering gleam as the bright sun dawned with warmth, making the atmosphere commendable for winter and coffee lovers. Students at Manali's Arts and Science Academy are rushing to get to their respective classes expect for the selected few who were seen seated near the gazebo in the Academy's central garden. It was an honor and a privilege to be a part of this particular class that was held outside the walls of the Academy's main building. It was a special class and it required an extraordinary setting for encouraging students to explore beyond the traditional solitary classroom setting. Students were seated in the seats that the professor arranged himself in the morning when he felt inspired by this particular location; it was his way of really getting his students to feel the content of his lesson.

Translating pen to piano, the professor takes his students back through time, in a chamber filled with great compositions…it's a different tone, a key set out to delight the saddest of hearts yet excite the hopeful to be inspired, to yearn, and to dream. It's soft at first, the subtleness is apparent, but slowly is pushes forwards, growing louder and powerful. It's like magic; a piece composed so gracefully that nothing else could ever come close to its standards. Like music on water, the fluidity and smoothness is felt in every key he plays. Engulfed by the spell-bounding lesson, the students forget to breathe for a moment and then it finishes. Just like that, it ended. There is a long pause. No one talks. Absorbed in silence…

The professor looks about his audience, feeling proud by their captivated attention and amused expressions, just what he had hoped for he thought to himself and smiled. His students applaud for him loudly with pride, expressing both their gratitude and the desire to learn from his talented and admirable personality.

"Oye Lucky…Luckiee.." Tara ran after Lucky right after their magical music class ended.

"Hmm..mmm? Kya hain…" Lucky turned around looking bit irritated by Tara as she grabbed him by his backpack

"Lucky chalo na canteen chaltey hain…mujhay bhook lagi hain…please.. aur dekho na dohpair ka aik (one) baj raha hain."

"Dekho puranay time kay hisaab se abhi sirf bara (12) bajay hain, aur dusri baat yeh kay canteen hum uss waqt nahi jaaye gay jub tak mujhay bhook nahi lagti…"

"But I am hungry na yaar…!" Tara pouted like a little kid

"Oye! tum na kahnay kay akhri bite kay baad se he "hungry" hojati hoon, pata nahi jaata kahaan hain yeh sub tumharahy ander Naintara..." Lucky's sentence is left incomplete as Tara gasped loudly, abruptly interrupting him.

"NAINTARA…! phir vahi, kitni baar kaha hain kay yeh meray parents ka diya hua old fashioned naam na liya karo…hazaar baar bataya hain kay Tara kaho sirf Tara! Jao mujhay nahi karni tumse baat aur main bhi tumhay LAKSHMAN bulao gi…L-A-K-S-H-M-A-N! Hmmmph!" Tara complained fuming with anger as lucku laughed at her cuteness.

"Toh sirf kehnay se kya hoga, dil se toh Lucky he nikaly ga na…" Lucky smiled, grabbing Tara by her shoulders and engulfing her in a side hug.

"Hmm…abb zayaada makhan na lago…aur chalo na please, tumne promise kiya tha kay agar main Sir Shekhar ki music class attend karoongi toh tum mujhay chaat khilao gay…"

"Haan, yaad hain mujhay, per khreedo gi tum aur khilao ga main… theek hain sweetheart…"

"Acha tum chalo toh sahi canteen ki taraf…" Tara dragged him by his backpack again.

"Okay fine…par Khanak kahaan hain? Voh nazar nahi arahi ajj." Lucky asked as they started to walk towards the canteen.

"Pata nahi, voh toh Sir.Shekhar ki koi class kabhi miss nahi karti…lagta hain ajj college nahi ayi…" Tara replied confused as she knew very well that Khanak is not the type to skip college just because.

On the other side of the campus, Khanak is seen running at full speed, tumbling in to things, and dodging her way through students. While on her way to her destination she pauses for a moment to ask one of the girls about Sir Shekhar's whereabouts and finds out that he is in his office. She continues her sprint to his office and stops right outside his door and peeks in through his window. She sees him on the phone and so she takes a minute to catch a breath then takes out a band-aid from her bag and wraps it around her wrist before going in.

"Kya main ander ajao Sir?" Khanak knocks softly as Sir Shekhar looks up at her after hanging up the phone.

"Yes come in…" Sir Shekhar responded dryly and got back to work on his laptop, skipping the usual friendly demeanor he keeps with his students. Khanak picks up the hint.

"Sir… app mujhse naraaz hain?"

"Maine toh kuch nahi kaha."

"App jaante hain na Sir, appki top student Khanak Mathur kabhi late nahi hot…aur agar late hojaye toh usskay peechay solid reason hota hain..." She purposely glances at her "injured" hand as she finished off her sentence knowing that her professor would definitely catch her "reason".

"Haan dikh raha hain…" Sir Shekhar acknowledged her "injured" hand but then got back to his work again.

"Uhh..Sir, voh subah saveray jub mein tayaar ho kar Univeristy kay liye ghar se nikli toh mujhay iss baat ka bilqual andaaza nahi tha kay meray neighbors kay shaaraati bachoon ne lawn mein paani ka pipe khula choor diya tha, jis ka pani porch per tha aur jub mein darwazay se nikli toh mera paao philsal gaya aur main gir gaye, haath per choot lag gaye, aur phir bahiya kay saath hospital jaana para, jahaan per doctor ne X-Ray kiya ur mujhay yeh note diya aur kaha yeh note
Sir Shekhar ko dikhayiay ga aur batayiay ga kay I have a geniuine medical problem." Khanak completed her long and detailed sentence and smiled putting forwards the so called
doctor's note for Sir Shekhar who had no expression on his face.

"Meri iss khirki say sub nazar aata hain…you know darwazay ka bahir ka view…" Sir Shekar stated clearly as Khanak realized that he knew that she was not being completely honest. She looked like a little child as she made a cute expression looking super innocent.

"So, abb app bataye gi kay app ajj late kyun hain?"

"Umm..Sir voh Bahiyaa ki bike ka tire kharaab hogaya tha…I am sorry…" Khanak stated honestly, looking ashamed.

"Alright then, just remember kay nothing should be more important that your education…okay?" Sir Shekhar finally gave in and smiled at Khanak, knowing she was pure of heart.

"Okay Sir..." Khanak smiled back widely as he accepted her sincere apology.

"Now go or you'll be late to other classes as well…" Sir Shekhar pointed towards his door, giving her permission to leave. As Khanak left his room he shook his head reminiscing about his own college days and showing up late for classes every once in a while.

Meanwhile on the other side of the town Shaantanu Khandelwal searches for a telephone booth to call back home and inform of his safe arrival. Madhavi had instructed him to call her right away but it was late at night and the small hotel he was staying had no signal. He had planned on waking up early but his deep sleep due to fatigue had kept him asleep well in to the afternoon.

"Hello Mom…?"

"Shaan? Finally! itni dair kyun kardi phone karnay mein? Sub theek toh hain na?" Madhavi asked with concern as she finally got the call she was expecting since last night.

"Jee Mom, I am sorry phone kar nay mein dair hogai..actually there was no signal in the hotel aur
phir raat bhi bahut hogaye thi…vaise ghar per sub theek hain na…?"

"Not really, Sunil kafi naraaz hain per Maa ne kuch cool down kiya hain aur Khushboo bhi subah se unkay saath he hain, tumhari bahbhi itni supportive hogi yeh maine expect nahi kiya tha… but I think it's a good thing" Madhvi updated Shaan quickly about the Khandelwal house atmoshphere at the moment.

"I know Mom, Bhabhi is the best…abhi unhay bhi call karni hain…but mujhay cell phone ka kuch pata nahi hain, I'll figure something out, abhi main phone booth se baat kar raha hoon…"

"Okay beta, mujhay bhi jana hain, Sunil kahein bahir phir se shuru na hojaye…Take care"

"Bye Mom…" Shaan smiled hanging up the phone and imagining Sunil's anger but he knew that his supporters back home could manage to pacify him until he gets back and hopefully amend his mistakes by explaining everything out clearly.

Shaan heads back to the hotel after grabbing some garam Chai off the stall and calling it his breakfast. He was super lazy at eating and when it came to eating alone he just hated the thought of food. As he walked from the small hotel lobby to his room he planned out his day mentally and realized he needed to find a way to get to the town's local music legend before the formal class for which he still needed to go by the school for enrollment verification purposes. He had a lot to do but with the kind of determination he had he felt like nothing was impossible.

Engulfed with the daily routine at his shop, Adi was busy with customers like always. Convincing them about the different saris and shalwar suits that were in stock for the season, what started out as a clerical job had turned him in to a one of the best salesman and a respected manager of Manali's famous Perfection Cloth House. The name was truly a reflection of how Adi ran things in it, business had prospered like never before and the owner was satisfied with Adi's performance. He trusted him enough to manage it all by himself and left for Mumbai to expand his franchise in the busy city instead to limiting himself to a small town like Manali. For Adi the store meant everything as it was his only way to earn a decent living that provided for financial security for Khanak and himself. He was satisfied with his standing but every once in a while he wished he was educated properly as it would have geared him towards professional business field, nevertheless he was thankful for what he had as he knew him and Khanak were leading a simple but a comfortable life. They made the most of the little they had.

"Mohit tumne phone kardiya Mrs.Sharma ko kay unki selected sari ki delivery jaldi hojaye gi, naya stock jaldi agaya hain iss haftay." Adi inquired Mohit who was one of the salesperson on the store's staff.

"Haan bahiya phone toh maine kar diya tha per unhay ne ghar delivery cancel kardi aur kahaan kay voh ajj store per khus aye gi, koi naya order bhi dena hain, unki bahu ko humaray peechlay stock ki saris kuch zaayda he pasand ayi toh phir se kuch ussi style ka lena chahti hain…" Mohit conveyed Mrs.Sharma's message to Adi as he made a mental note to not store away the old stock just yet.

"Theek hain toh phir aik kaam karo puranay stock kay kuch designs yahi per rehany do, aur naye waalay display per laga do…vaise tumne lunch kiya?" Adi asked with a smile knowing that a hard worker like Mohit had not only skipped lunch but his breakfast due to the early rush of customers in the store today.

"Nahi Bahiyaa per app kay liye kuch lao?" Mohit asked folding up the left over clothes in the sale section.

"Mera toh dabba Chutki ne pack kar kay diya tha…per mujhay Bhabhiji ko jawaab dena hain kay aur aggar tum bhook se mar gaye toh main unhay kya kaho ga…abb jao aur jaakay lunch karlo, chaho toh ghar chalay jao abhi kuch aisa khass rush bhi nahi hain…" Adi instructed settling himself at the counter to check up on the accounts for the day.

"App such mein yahan akele theek hain?"

"Haan such mein main yahan akele theek ho, aur sirf 30 mins ki toh baat hain, phir ajana vapis." Adi confirmed with a smile.

"Theek hain Bahiya main phir thori dair mein aata ho…" Mohit smiled with gratitude and left for his break as Adi got busy with the accounts while there were no customers present for the time being.

Back at the university Khanak and her friends were finally done with the day as it was almost four o' clock in the afternoon and they were all tired after a hectic day of examinations and back to back lectures.

"Yaar yeh Mondays itnay slow kyun jaatey hain?" Tara asked slapping down her books on their table that was exclusively reserved for their gang.

"Kyunki Sundays bahut fast hotey hain…aur har Sunday kay baad Monday aata hain…" Lucky replied easing up in his chair a little.

" Oye Shut up Lucky, tujhay har sawaal ka jawaab dena zaroori hain kya?" Irritated by Lucky's chilled out attitude Tara exploded without thinking.

"Lagta hain issay thand mein garmi hogayi hain…yunhi hum sub ghussa ho rahi hain…" Abhay whispered to Lucky as he observed her frustration.

"Yeh larkiyoon ki tarah aik duray kay kanoon mein kya baatein kar rahay ho?" Tara looked at the two guys with suspicion.

"Nahi kuch..kuch bhi toh nahi…hum kyun kaan mein baatein karay gay..." Lucky straightened up as he denied her accusation casually.

"Whatever… yeh Sam aur Khanak kahaan hain?" Tara inquired noticing that their gang was incomplete.

"Hum Yahaan hain!" a bubbly replay came from the back as both Khanak and Sam made their way to the table to join in with their friends

"Finally, yahan mein akeli larki inn dono losers kay saath demaag kharaab kar rahi thi…thank god kay tum dono agaye…" Tara sighed in relief as her two favorite girls settled themselves at the table.

"Well, hum losers toh tum losers ki best friend, aur I think kay loser code kay hisaab se tum bhi aik tarah se loser he hui…" Abhay retorted in his defense while Lucky just sat back and waited for thr bickering to start.

"Uff! Tum loog sirf girls or boys ki jang he lartey rehna puri zindagi…" Sam interrupted before Tara got the chance to argue back.

"Haan choro na yeh sub aur lunch ya kuch order karo…" Khanak added as she tried to divert the groups attention in a positive direction.

While Khanak and her friends ate lunch in the canteen, Shaantanu Kahndelwal found himself lost in the university's hallways as he searched for the Dean's office. He was sure he took the first right up the stairs that was supposed to have the Dean's office on the first left but somehow he had ended up in a hallway filled with empty classrooms at this hour.

"Yaar yeh kahaan phass gaya…kub se hallways mein ghoom raha hoon per Dean ka office mill he nahi raha…" He thought to himself and looked around once again.

"Are you lost?" A voice called out to Shaan as he turned around an found a professor questioning his presence in an empty hallway looking lost.

"Yes..I..I..think so.." Shaan answered not sure of himself.

"Acha, lakin I can definitely tell that you are lost…" The professor smiled at Shaan and walked towards him to help him out.

"Sorry, actually I am looking for the Dean's office, pehli dafa yahaan aya hoon to hiss liye…" Shaan tried to explain himself a bit better but somehow his attention was stuck on the professor's face as he came up close to him.

"Dean ka office uss pehlay valay hall mein hain, app aik hallway agay pooch gaye ho…" The professor pointed towards the back Hallway and turned to leave.

"Sir!" Shaan called out and this time he walked over to him as he turned to face him once again.

"I am Shaantanu Khandelwal…" He extended his hand and introduced himself as the professor smiled at his polite manners and shook his hand.

"I am Professor Shekhar." He revealed his name and title simply while taking back his hand from a firm hand shake.

"Professor Shekhar! the famous musician?" Shaan exclaimed not being able to hold in his excitement as now the resemblance in his head finally made sense.

"Yes, but I prefer to be known as a Literature professor here…" Sir Shekhar reminded him of his identity clearly.

"Sorry, actually maine appki bare mein bahut kuch phara aur suna hain, iss liye I got excited…"Shaan confessed his true feelings without hesitating.

"Okay then, if you stay here long enough you'll be able to know the real me aur main prefer karo ga kay app mujahy sirf aik musician ki hasiyaat tak limited na rakhay." Sir Shekhar made his point in a firm but polite manner which Shaat respected.

"Ofcourse Sir, It was great meeting you." Shaan smiled widely as he finally came face to face with one of his ideals.

"Same here and see you around!" Sir Shekhar smiled back and then turned to leave for his office as Shaan stood there in amusement, realizing that Sir Shekhar's personality was so much more than what he had expected. It was gonna be a great semester he thought to himself and finally made it to the Dean's office.

Part Three: Woh Pehli Baar

After lunch Khanak excused herself from the gang and walked over to her favorite spot just behind the main building of the campus. She would wait there until Adi came by to pick her up even though Khanak could have easily managed the short walk home. She settled herself on one of the benches in front of the beautiful view of Manali's pristine lake that flowed from the valley; it was truly a breathtaking view which would compel Khanak to bring out one of her hidden talents.

She would sit there with her journal and pen down the most beautiful lyrical poetry. Her words were magical but she always underestimated them and called herself an amateur when she looked back on them. It was no different today but her thoughts were incomplete every time she came up with a line, something was missing from her usual spark. It really bothered her as she kept scratching out the lines over and over again. She closed her journal in frustration and relaxed herself on the bench, closing her eyes and taking in the serenity that flowed from the water nearby. But something else caught her attention, a faint acoustic from a distance made her open her eyes and search for its source.

She picked up her hand bag and looked about the surroundings but saw no one around, the beautiful tone drew her closer as her eyes searched frantically for the reason responsible for it. She walked over to the edge of the lake and finally putting her end to her search as her eyes fell upon a distant stranger completely lost in strumming his guitar. She wondered if he realized the magical spell he was casting through his talent. She edged closer, completely lost in the trance not realizing her closer proximity with the stranger who was seated on a rock located at the edge of the lake.

Shaan was completely lost in his own world while strumming the newly discovered tone on his guitar, his eyes were closed as he let the music within him take control of his senses. Whenever he would play a piece that came straight from his heart, he would be completely engulfed by some sort of a musical enigma. He would have continued his reverie for a little while longer but it was broken by the sudden realization of someone else's presence. At first he shook the feeling of calling it his imagination but then the scents of something fresh, something like that of fresh damask rose. He wasn't sure if he should open his eyes to figure out what was causing it or should he just let it all sink in for a little while longer as it felt heavenly.

Slowly he opened his eyes as his fingers lingered on his guitar's strings, finishing off the acoustic he had started. For the first time their eyes met and there was spark, well not an actual lighting spark but a spark that ignited between their eyelock, between her big brown eyes to his lighter ones, almost like a perfect fit. Shaan was trying hard to convince himself of this stunning reality, of her simplistic beauty, but he just couldn't bring himself to realize that yet. Not until every little feature of her angelic face makes an imprint on his mind. He noticed that her hair was carelessly swaying with the wind and it complimented her rosy cheeks, he knew he was staring but it wasn't his fault entirely as this certain beauty was returning the favor by doing the same. Her smile was sweetly adjusted on her perfect lips while she kept her gaze on him for sometime longer causing Shaan to finally register the reality in his senses, this was real…he was not dreaming…

"Umm..Hi…?" Shaan adjusted himself a bit and finally spoke up a bit although it was difficult to really find words at the moment.

Khanak recognized the verbal contact he was trying to make a couple of seconds later but had no idea how to respond…her mind was blank…completely empty, she felt like she had no mental competence in herself. She looked up at him wanting to say something but then failed at her attempt to do so. The stranger was awaiting her answer with a curious smile and an amused look on his face. She was fidgeting and she could feel that, she wondered if he noticed it too and then it hits her, the reason that drew her to him, it was his music. Her words finally came back to her and she was able to look up in confidence.

"Aa..aap ka music...voh...umm…bahut khoobsorat dhun thi…app ne khud compose ki hain?" Khanak inquired completely taking Shaan by surprise as there was no initial formality or an
answer to his "Hi".

"Haan khud compose ki hain, abhi thori dair pehlay…Thanks"He answered back briefly, noticing the obvious nervousness on an unnamed person admiring his music. Shaantanu thought about speaking up to break the awkward silence that was taking over them but before he could do so Khanak started to walk away from him.

He thought about going after her but then he decided not to, something told him that he will see Ms. Beautiful again soon. He smiled watching her disappear through University's main gate and then left to head back to his hotel for the day.

"Aaj kisa din ghuzra Chutki…?" Adi inquired as Khanak latched on to his shoulders for support while they drove back home on his bike. She was awfully quite today as Adi was usually not the first one to ask this question.

"Aaj kafi busy tha…exams…lectures…aur aik naye dhun.." Khanak said without feeling the need to combine everything in one sentence.

"Naye dhun..? kya matlab?" Adi questioned not understanding his sister's randomness but Khank was just smiling in the back, well aware of the fact that she has completely gone crazy after her encounter with a certain Music Magician.

"Nahi kuch nahi Bahiyya…Aaj kahnay mein kya banao…?" Khanak asked not wanting Adi to get confused any further as she herself was pretty confused about the whole matter.

"Kuch bhi bana lena…tumhayri marzi.." Adi replied as they took the final turn that led them to their house. Khanak's strangeness was soon forgotten by Adi as they begin talking about their day casually and updating each other about things that they usually talk about.

Back at the hotel Shaan finally manages to get some signal on his phone and decides to dial back home to talk to his favorite Bahbhi and Daadi. He dialed the home phone number as knowing that Sunil won't be home this early in the evening, but like always he was in for a surprise when Sunil answered his call, he thought about hanging up but then decided not to. He was his Dad and hopefully he had forgiven him by now.

"Hello Dad…main Shaan…"

"Haan bolo, kuch chiyay tumhay…" Sunil asked dryly

"Nahi…app theek hain…ghar per sub kuch…

"Kuan sa ghar? Aur tumhay kyun humari fikhr hain, kis rishte se…?"

"Dad…main.."

"Shaantanu tumne jo faisla liya hain voh akelay liya tha aur maine bhi jo faisla liya hain akelay he liya hain…don't bother calling again or troubling yourself with the burden of this family…tum abb se meri family kay member nahi rahay…Live out your life but don't look back on us as you are on your own from now." Sunil stated sternly and hung up the phone leaving Shaantanu is tears. He had no idea how far things have gone back home within the last 12 hours of the day. Walking over to his room's window Shaantanu could still hear Sunil's words loud and clear in his head, his balance was barely kept as he settled himself on the chair. He was deeply hurt by his father's demeanor, the shock was just starting to be absorbed in his head and the realization of not being in control of the situation will soon follow. He was a stranger in a new town and he had never ever felt this lonely in his life before.

"Khusboo yeh sub theek nahi ho raha… Dad ne Shaan ko yeh sub…Ghawd! I am just so upset with Dad." Akshay said after overhearing Sunil's phone conversation with Shaan.

"I know…Dad bhi na itna over react kyun kar rahay hain, Shaan has done nothing wrong…"

"Pata nahi, per iss situation mein hum Dad ko apni kisi bhi appeal se nahi mana saktey…he is hell bound on his decision…aur Shaan vahaan akela hain, pata nahi kya sooch raha hoga..kitna preshaan hoga voh"

"Akshay tum ussay call karo abhi.." Khusboo advised Akshay handing him her phone
"Haan main phone karta hoon…" Akshay said as he dialed Shaantanu's number and waited for an answer on the other end of the line.

"Kya hua? Phone uthaya uss ne?" Khusboo asked anxiously as Akshay held the phone hoping for an answer but eventually got a "no signal" from the operator, he had hang up with a disappointed look.

"Nahi Kushboo, I think wahaan signal ka kuch problem hain…let's wait for Shaan to call us back himself." Akshay suggested and hugged his worried wfe, trying to calm her down to the best of his abilities.

Okay...

You have put so much work into your VM...its beautiful...it really is...intrigues me to no end...

shall read the parts and comment

*edited*

Okay firstly, like i said I am extremely intrigued by the whole new story...your writing makes it read like a show itself...i love the little details in your story.....very nicely done...

i am still a little unsure of the characterisation you have in mind for your shanak...I assume it shall be a little different from the show...especially shaan's...since he seems to be quite a go getter in your story...because his life's aim is not connected to khanak in your story...

I love that each chapter has a title...and such a lyrical one...

please PM me when you update...

YAAAAY! My first comment on this THREAD...so glad that you spoke your mind and didn't just limit your comment to a single line....
AND, yes you guessed it right the characterization is definitely very different from the show, Shaan and his music won't be taken super lightly in my story...Khanak will indeed become his aim later on but for now it will focus on their time in University together...I won't make it totally university centered for the entire plot as i have got some major story twists coming up ahead...The story will move on from Manali to Mumbai...
Also THANK YOU so much for noticing the HARD WORK with which i made the VM it was a challenge but the Song inspired me so i just had to...finding clips for Adi was so hard but i guess i managed...there are SPOILERS hidden in the vm so i encourage my readers to guess away the storyline....LOL...
Thank You Sweetheart for such a great feedback and will surely PM you when i update next....just feel free to speak you mind without any constrictions from my side.
