Part III
When the secretary buzzs saying Shaan is here to meet him, Akshay is surprised but extremely glad to see his brother out of the house after 2 weeks or so. He cannot wait to hold him by the ear and ship him off to get Khanak; so shock is his reaction when Shaan says counter-sue:
Akki: Kya??
Shaan: yes, Bhaiya, counter-sue, Mai Rahul ko counter-sue karna chahta hoon. Usne meri Khanak ke saath itna bada khel khela, aur main chup nahin baith sakta, use bhi pata ho ki Khanak aur mere saath panga lene ka parinaam
Akki: pari koun?
Shaan: Come one Bhaiyaa…parinaam…result?!! Aap bhi na…
Akki: (with a small smile): But why counter-sue
Shaan: Because I just told him he can shove his music contract, iska matlab ki woh definitely mujhe adaalat leke jayega, lekin usse pehle hum ussse notice bhej denge
Akki: Kis baat pe notice
Shaan: I don't know yaar,. woh sab mujhe pata nahin, kuch tho hoga, please bhaiya, you have got to help me, Choksiji se baat kijiye, woh lawyer ke saat appointment karwa denge
Akki: Theek hai, main abhi Choksi ko bulata hoon, tu baith tho ja, tujhe dekhke bahut din hogaye, Chotey.
Shaan: (rubbing the back of his neck and smiles): Okay, baithta hoon. Lekin Choksi ko abhi bulayiye.
Akki: Haan baba..
"Haan baba, haan.." yells Khanak shutting her ears with a wide grin, the kids around her are yelling for more paint. She laughs, this brings her immense happiness.,., teaching the kids to paint. She has taken up a job as an art teacher in the local school and is surprised how she had an answer for Gopi when she asked;
Gopi: Kya??? tu iskool mein chitrakaari padhayegee?
Khanak: iskool nahin…skool..haan, mujhe kalakaari bahut pasand hai aur
Gopi: (rolling her eyes) Lekin jab Shantanu Bha aayenge tujhe lene tab bachon ka kya hoga?
Khanak: Arrey maine bade masterjee ke saath baat kar lee hai, main har saal do mahine ke liye aaongee bachon ko chitrakaari seekhane ke liye
Gopi: Tho Shaantanu bha do mahine baad aane wale hai kya tujhe lene?
Khanak: (quietens down and then smiles again): Haan, maine tujhe bataya nahin?
Gopi: (looks at her suspiciously): Nahin tho… pata nahin Khanak mujhe aisa kyun lag raha hai ki tu mujhse kuch chupa rahee hai
Khanak: (drags her by hand and smiles at her): Arrey baba, yeh sab chod, bol chachee kya keh rahee thee tere shaadi ke baare mein??
Gopi: Chup kar, meri shaadi nahin, woh meri saheli hai na, uskee shaadi hai.
They reach Khanak's house while Gopi is relating the story..
Gopi: Aur pata hain, uskee shaadi Dhanna kaka ke yahaan jo kaam karta hai, uske saath hone waali hai
Khanak: KYA?!
Gopi: Haan, (suddenly hitting her forehead): arrey baap re, main tho ma ki saadi Durga Chaachee ke yahan bhool aayee hoon, main chaltee hoon
Khanak: Haan, ja ..
Khanak shuts the door, mutters to herself..
"Uski shaadi mithai kumar se hone waali hai",.,…and suddenly starts laughing so hard that she ends up sitting on the floor sobbing to her hearts content and mutters 'Aap aa rahe ho na do mahine mein?'
She recollects her breakdown and looks back at the kids, and realizes she should know more than anyone else she needs to live for today and should not care how Shaantanu feels or whether he is even thinking about her. He is, she knows, but how can that help the betrayal she feels?
For the past few days, Shaan has been pouring over papers and books that the lawyer has given him to help make a strong case against Rahul. He thinks he is making some headway and gets up to talk to his brother about it. He sees his brother and Choksi talking animatedly through the glass doors and walls. Seems serious, he thinks, maybe they need another head, if not maybe someone to blame it all on, smiling he enters;
Akki: Aaja chotey, teri hi kami thi..
Choksi: Main chalta hoon
Shaan: Nahin, Choksiji aap rukiye, boliye kya baatein chal rahee thee
Akki: Chod Chotey,
Choksi: Woh actually, jo cloth mill ka project tha, usmein bahut saare problems aa gaye hai
Shaan: Acha, mujhe file dijiye, main dekhta hoon..
Akki: Are you sure?
Shaan: Of course! Choksiji, aap mere saath kal theek dus baje milne aajayiye, tab tak main file bhi padh loonga, okay?
Shaan takes the file, steps back into his office, shuts the door and shuts his eyes..
Khanak: Matlab ke agar ek aisi machine banne jis par kapde pe ek nahin par ek saath teen rang aa jaye tho baat hi kuch aur hogee na..
Shaan: Hmmm..tum kapdon ke baare mein kuch jyaada hi jaanti ho..
Khanak: Woh tho hai! Main sab kuch jaantee hoon!!
Shaan: (holding her): agar sab kuch jaantee ho,.,. tho batao, ab main kya soch raha hoon?
Khanak: (with a mocking smile): Aaap kya soch rahe honge? Bhook lag rahee hogi aur kya?
Shaan: (with a naughty smile and a soft voice): Woh tho lag rahee hai Khanak.,.
Khanak: Maine Kheer banayee hai, leke aaon..
Shaan: (whispers near her ear): Bhook uss type meethe ke liye nahin lag rahee Khanak..,.
Khanak: uss type..iss type…kitne saare meethai ki jaankaari hai aapko?
Shaan: (smiles into her lips): Akhir Mithai Kumar kaun hai??
Khanak: (laughs): Mere pati…
Shaan looks up from his reverie, collects the files and books and sets to go home. He sees his dad enter Akshay's room, his father has not spoken to him for days, he has no time now to correct that, needs to rush on things.
Sunil and Akshay enter home happily smiling away; Sunil sees Madhavi and says;
Sunil: Tumhara ladlaa kahaan hai, Madhavi?
Mad: Dekhiye, aap usse aaj kuch mat kahiye, woh bechara bahut thakka hua lag raha tha, seedhe upar chala gaya aur Harilal uska khaana upar leke jaa raha hai
Sunil sees Harilal going upstairs
Sunil: Harilal, tum Shaan ko khana leke jaarahe ho, ..,
Harilal: Woh chote baba ne kahaa ki aaj khana nahin khayenge
Mad: Kya? Kab?!
Harilal: Woh jab maine unko dhulwaadi se aaya hua packet diya, tab woh kholke, hass pade aur phir kahaa, mera dil aur pet bhar gaya, aaj no khana!
Mad, Akki and Sunil look at each other, Harilal leaves,
Mad: Ab?!
Sunil: Let it be, Madhavi. I am sure ki everything is okay.
Akki: Is Khusboo ko bhi ladies week out ke liye yahee week mila, she would know what to do..
Sunil (with a laugh): Koun? Khusboo??
Mad (glares at Sunil): Oh, Akshay, tum usse miss kar rahe ho na, don't worry, woh next week aajayegee. Pata nahin mere dono beton ki biwiyaan ghar chod ke jaane ke liye hamesha tayaar rehtee hai..
Sunil: (laughs): Jaisi saas, waisi bahu…
Mad: (cheekily): Haan, bilkul, pata nahin, meri saas ghar wapas kab aayegee??!!
Sunil: (small smile): chalo, ab khaana khale.
Akshay holds his mother by her shoulders and mouths 'good one'.
After dinner, Madhavi cannot help peep into her son's room. She goes in to see Shaan fast asleep clutching two flat pieces of wood, she is surprised and confused. She tries to pull them from his arms, cannot, then switches on the bed light to see two pieces of a 12 inch ruler, confuses her even more. But the thing that makes her happy is Shaan's smiling face and the way he has held on to those two pieces of wood, like his life depends on them. He seems so secure, which mother would pull them away.
Dil behel tho jayegaa iss khayal se
Haal mil gaya tumhara, apne haal se
