There are a bunch of questions here:

1. Pushkal was the younger son of Mandavi, so even if one assumes that Kush, Luv, and the older sons of LBS Chandraketu, Taksha and Subahu were born, they'd just have been 12. Nothing is said or known about the other 3 sisters having twins, so Pushkal must have been 10 or 9? The only way Pushkal can be the age shown is if Bharat and Shatrughan had their kids during Rama's vanvas. In that case, assuming Taksha was born say year 2 of vanvas and Pushkal year 4, Pushkal would have been ~22 at the time of this yagna, in which case he could have been married, and a commander. Still begs the question - how was Pushkal chosen for this assignment?

2. In all the accounts of Janak I've read, he and his brother are son-less, and unlike Dasharath, he never strove for any sons. Then how does he have a son here, and why would he continue to act like a vassal of Rama despite Sita's exile? Sure, Rama did rajdharm for Ayodhya, but Mithila isn't obligated to continue to be a vassal of Ayodhya since the basis of this alliance - Sita being maharani - is no longer valid.

3. In both the Valmiki and other accounts of the yagna, Rama's army (irrespective of who led it) went unchallenged throughout the yagna. In Valmiki, even Luv & Kush didn't accost it. In the other accounts, they did. But in this account of yours, just about everybody wants to stop/steal this horse.😕

4. Pushkal actually gets killed during this expedition?😕 (Even if he's revived later?) Also, what were the other brothers - Taksha, Chandraketu, Subahu, Angad et al doing?

Anyway, thanks for posting this fascinating story.

Rajnish, thanks for the stories. I have never read them before. I did read a translation of the Padma Puran but did not read these stories . . .

The Puranas have kandas too??? This is news to me.

The stories I read from the Padma Puran are:

The origin of Padma Puran
The 18 Puranas and Lord Vishnu's Form
Story of Sivasarma
Somasarma and Svrata
Bala and Vritra
Vritra's destruction
Sukala's History
Pipala (Some say the name is Pipalada)
Chyavana Rishi and the parrots
Gandharva Daughters
Vikundhala's History
Cleaning and purifying the temple
Sridhar's dhaan
Leelavathi and the effects of Radhashtami vrat
Mahalakshmi Vrat Mahima
Dinanaath and Viswamitra
Chitrasena
Bhima and Vishnu Lok
Hemaprabha reaching Vishnu Lok
Madhu Kaitabha
Ganga's origin
Kalakalpa's History

Either I had found the wrong book or the translation I read is incomplete.

Thanks again for the interesting stories.

Part-12
(Lav fight with Ram's army starts, Lav killed Ram's army chief Kalajit )

When Shatrughn saw his warriors' severed arms he got very angry.

Shatrughn
- "Who has cut your arms? He will not escape today even if Devtaa come for his help?"

Warriors said - "A child whose face is very similar to Raam's face, has done this to us."

Hearing this Shatrughn became angrier than ever that a child had caught the horse. Shatrughn ordered his army chief Kaaljit to march to the place where the child had caught the horse, with an organized army. Kaaljit said to the child

Kaaljit- "This horse belongs to Shree Raam. Because you look like Raam that is why I feel pity on you. If you will not obey me you will have to lose your life."

Lav smiled and said - "Go, I leave you. Tell your Raam about catching the horse. I am not afraid of you. By the grace of my mother, I treat everybody like a cotton pile. Your name is Kaaljit. I am your Kaal. First win me then only you will be able to prove your name."

Kaaljit asked - "O child, In whose family your born? What is your name? I do not know anything about your family, name, age etc. Besides I am sitting on chariot, and you are standing on the ground. How can I fight with you in this situation?"

Lav said - "What you have to do with my name, family and age? I am Lav and in one Lav (moment) I can win everybody. [And if you are hesitating to fight with me because you are on chariot and I am on ground] then Lo, just now I bring you on ground."

And Lav started shooting arrows at the army chief. Kaaljit also shot arrows but Lav cut all of them in hundreds of pieces and broke his chariot.Kaaljit then rode on an elephant. Lav cut the elephant's trunk and rode on the elephant. He broke Kaaljit's crown in hundred pieces and his armor in thousand pieces and felled him on the ground and killed him. Other people came to fight with him but he killed many of them and pushed back some of them . Those some who escaped, told everything to Shatrughn. Shatrughn couldn't believe that Kaaljit was killed in the fight.

He asked Sumati - "Do you know who is this child who has kidnapped my horse and killed my so large army?"

Sumati said - "This is Vaalmeeki's Aashram. Kshatriya do not live here, it may be possible that Indra himself has come here, or maybe Bhagavaan Shankar has come here in the form of a child. You go there and arrest him alive. I will show this wonder to Raghunaath Jee."

So Shatrughn went to that child. Lav had already killed some, wounded some, and pushed back some soldiers. Soldiers started running away from the field.

But wasn't Urmila still the wife of Lakshman? Urmila was also a daughter of Janak, so wouldn't Mithila still have the alliance with Ayodhya through Urmila even after Sita's banishment?

Thanks again for the interesting stories.

Vibhishna: You've read the correct stories 😊
Padma Purana contains five parts- Srishtikhand, Bhumikhand, Swargkhand, Patalkhand and Uttarkhand.
The story of Indra and Vrtra, Story of Sivasarma appear in the Bhumi-khand of Padma-Puran.
You might have got confused with the pronunciations. (Correct me if I'm wrong).; Khandas are a part of Padma Puran while Ka^ndas are a part of Ramayan. The story of Lav-Kush stopping the horse of Ashwamedha is described in Patalkhand of Padma puran.
Ka^nd means "A series of incidents"
Khanda means "A huge chunk or a part" (of a story or a thing)

Thank you so much Ananya. The book I read just had the stories. Hence, I did not know the Puranas have Kandas. Thank you for the explanaitons too.

I searched and found another book. It was a brief account of the Padma Purana. I read the story of Luv Kush capturing the horse but nothing else was mentioned in it.

I was thinking that perhaps these stories were from a later Ashwamedha Yagna done by Ram, though it still does not clarify how Pushkal was chosen for the assignment. 😕
