PART-1
(Ram prepares for ashmedh Yagna and let loose the horse)

One day, the great sage, Agastya, came to see Lord Rama at His royal court.

Ram-"You are a great ascetic, what can I do for you? Today we all have become cleansed by your coming here."

Agastya replied-
"Your Darshan is difficult even to Devtaa, that is why I have come here. Seeing you here my all sins are destroyed."

During their conversation, Lord Rama expressed His great unhappiness at having killed Ravana, due to his being the son of a brahmana.

Ram said-"Hey Vipravar, No Braahman has ever heard a harsh word from Ikshwaaku family's person, and I killed them? Braahman are the roots to bear Ved tree and I have killed such Braahman family, what should I do to repent?"

Agastya replied-
"You are beyond Prakriti, you are Parameshwar, you are the Creator, you are the sustainer and you are the destroyer. Even the greatest sinner's sins are washed away by taking your name only. Whoever does Ashwamedh Yagya, his all sins are washed away. You are omnipotent, so you also do Ashwamedh Yagya."

Ram then asks the method for doing ashmedh yagna.
What type of horse should be in this Yagya? What is the method of worship? And whom should be won for it?

Agastya Jee said - "Whose color is shining like Gangaa water and ear are black, mouth is red and tail is of yellow color, that horse is good for the Yagya. Write a letter on Vaishaakh Maas Poornimaa, such that it should describe your name and grace. Tie it on the forehead of the horse and leave him to wander around. He should be protected very well. If somebody takes him forcefully, it is guards' duty to bring him back from them. The Yagya doer should stay back in his city in a disciplined way until the horse comes back. He should always hold a horn of a deer. He should donate grains and wealth for one year. A beggar wants whatever thing, the Yagya doer should give him the same thing. Do this Yagya, it should destroy your all sins."

Rama agreed to this proposal and then asked Agastya to go to His stables and select a suitable horse. Thereafter, all of the necessary paraphernalia was collected. Rama then accompanied Agastya Rishi to the banks of the River Sarayu. There, Rama used a golden plough to prepare the sacrificial arena, and many palatial buildings were constructed. All of the great sages were then invited. Being extremely eager to see Lord Rama- Narada, Asita, Parvata, Kapila, Angira, Vyasa, Atri, Yajnavalkya, and Sukadeva, as well as numerous others, soon arrived at Ayodhya. Lord Rama gave them all gifts of cows and gold.Later, as they were all seated together, Lord Rama questioned the great sages, and they, in turn, gave Him instructions on various subjects. After some days, Vasishtha Muni informed Rama that the proper time for releasing the challenge-horse had arrived. Rama then ordered Lakshman to bring a suitable horse. In turn, Lakshmana spoke to the military commanders, instructing them to be ready to depart, for the Protection of the challenge-horse.The commander-in-chief, Kalajit, then brought the horse to be sacrificed. This horse was decorated very nicely, and the necessary rituals were performed

The horse was brought to Yagya Mandap. Agastya Jee was appointed as Brahmaa, Vaalmeeki Jee was appointed as Adhwaryu and Kanv Rishi was appointed as the gatekeeper. Yagya Mandap had eight gates and there were two Braahmans at each gate. On eastern gate were Deval and Asit Rishi, on southern gate were Kashyap and Atri Rishi, on western gate were Jaatookarnya and Jaajali Rishi, and on northern gate were Dwit and Ekat Muni. Then women came and worshipped the horse, Vashishth Jee tied the letter which was made of gold, on his forehead.

The letter read
"Our Raam is a great archer and is the Lord of Raghu Vansh. He is starting Ashwamedh Yagya, so he sends this horse around. Shatrughn who has killed Lavanaasur is the guard of this horse. Whoever king is proud of his bravery and might, let him come and dare to catch this horse and challenge Shatrughn."

Rama ordered Shatrughna to follow the horse, and defeat anyone who would attempt to capture it.
Finally, the horse was let loose.Bharata's son, Pushkala, accepted a sword from Lord Rama's hand and took up his position, guarding Shatrughna's rear. At this time, Rama requested Hanuman to also go and protect Shatrughna. Jaambvaan, Angad, Mayand, Sugreev, Nal, Neel etc Vaanar also got ready to go with that horse. Then Raam asked His Commander of army to suggest some other names who could go with the horse and sent all those people also along with the horse. Shatrughn went to his mother Sumitraa and asked her permission to go with the horse.

Sumitraa said - "Go, and be successful. Protect your nephew Pushkal. He is very religious."

Thus then there journey started and Ashwamedhna yagna began

PART-2
The Journey of Horse

The horse started his journey. He headed towards east. Bharat's son Pushkal went to his palace, asked permission from his wife Kaantimatee, and instructed her to behave properly with all elder and young women. She gave him his bow, two quivers, armor, crown and two earrings to wear and worshipped him. Then he took permission from his mother Maandavee and started on his journey. Shatrughn heard the praise of his brother Raam at several places. After the praising Raam, they used to give him costly clothes. jewelry etc. Raam had a minister whose name was Sumati, he was also following Shatrughn. The horse was going through Paanchaal, Kuru, Uttarkuru and Dashaarn etc countries.
Traveling thus they came to Ahichchhatraa Nagaree which was very beautiful and was decorated with various things. Its king was Sumad. There were many beautiful gardens, so the Yagya horse entered one of the forests and others followed him. There they saw a temple.

Shatrughn asked Sumati - "O Minister, Tell me whose temple is this? And why this Devtaa is here?"

Sumati knew everything, he said - "This is Kaamaakshaa Devee temple. She came here on the request of king Sumad. She fulfills all wishes for everybody so you also do Pranaam to her."

Shatrughn did Pranaam to her and asked what Punya Sumad did so that Devee came here.

Sumati continued- After his parents had been killed by rival kings, Sumada went to the forest and performed severe austerities, while meditating upon Goddess Bhavani (the wife of LordShiva).Being afraid of the strength of his tapasya, Indra sent Cupid, along with many Apsaras, to obstruct him. But, it came to be that, even in the presence of the celestial damsels, the king did not waver in his determination. At last, goddess Kamakshi appeared to the king and advised him that, in the future, when Lord Rama's brother would come to his kingdom, while following a challenge-horse, he should accompany him after giving his all his kingdom wealth e.t.c. this is how in the end he would attain moksha.

Shatrughna was delighted to hear this. Meanwhile, seated in his court, King Sumada heard from a messenger that a challenge-horse had come to his city. The king had always been thinking,When will the challenge-horse of Lord Rama come here, as predicted by goddess Kamakshi? The king arranged for a very royal reception for Shatrughna and his entourage. When they met, King Sumada placed Shatrughna and Pushkala on an elephant, so that they could enter the city in style.
After remaining for three nights, Shatrughna again set out, following the challenge-horse. The horse proceeded through areas inhabited by numerous sages, and so Shatrughna could hear everywhere the glories of his elder brother being sung. One day, the horse entered the ashram of Cyavana Muni. When Shatrughna entered the hermitage, he saw Cyavana, seated next to Sukanya. Shatrughna introduced himself as the brother of Lord Rama. In the course of their conversation, Shatrughna invited Cyavana to Rama's ashvamedha-yajna, and he ordered Hanuman to carry the sage to Ayodhya.
Horse continued his journey and others followed him. Horse arrived in Ratnaatat named city of King Vimal. King Vimal immediately came to see Shatrughn and said - "What can I do for you?" Shatrughn embraced him and Vimal handed over his kingdom to his son and accompanied the horse procession.
The horse proceeded again. Several million (Crore) people were guarding him. Now he came to Chakraankaa Nagaree. Its King's son Daman was wandering for hunting. He saw the horse adorned with golden letter and sandalwood paste. Daman opened the letter, read it and thought, "Who is this proud man who is greater than my father? Today I will teach him a good lesson." So he sent the horse to his city and he himself came to fight. In the meantime Raam's army arrived there looking for the horse, and when they didn't see the horse, King Prataapaagraya saw Daman's army facing for fight. His people said to him, "Maybe this man has taken our horse.", so Prataapaagraya sent his servant who asked Daman - "Where is Shree Raam's horse? Who has taken him? Doesn't he know Shree Raam?"

Prince Daman said - "I have taken him, and whoever wants to fight with me, he can fight with me and take his horse."

Both armies started fighting. Daman shot an arrow which felled Prataapaagaya, and then he waited for Shatrughn. Prataapaagraya's Saarathee took him off the battleground. People reported this to Shatrughn. When Shatrughn came to know about this he became very angry and asked - "Who has taken our horse and who has defeated Prataapaagraya?" His servants said - "King Subaahu's son Daman has taken out horse."

Part 3
The first fight in the journey

Shatrughn asked his people, "Who can face Daman?" Pushkal came forward to fight with Daman and Shatrughn sent him to fight with him. Both introduced themselves and started fighting. Pushkal was getting heavier for Daman. Daman's army was decreasing in number. Both were using Divine weapons - Aagneya Astra, Varun Astra etc. But once Pushkal shot an arrow which hit Daman's chest and he fell down. His Saarathee took him off the battle ground, and his people ran away from there. Seeing this Pushkal didn't hit anybody. Seeing Pushkal as a winner, Shatrughn got very happy."
When Subaahu heard that his army was killed, he asked his people as what was the matter. His people told him that Daman had caught Raam's horse and His nephew has defeated him. Hearing this Subaahu came to Shatrughn. Seeing Subaahu coming to them Shatrughn's army got ready to fight. With him came his brother Suketu and his sons Chitraang and Vichitra also. Subaahu fanned unconscious Daman for a while and then he came to his senses. As he woke up he asked - "Where is my bow? And where Pushkal has gone?" Subaahu made him sit on the chariot and asked his army chief to organize his army in Kraunch system."
Seeing Subaahu's ocean like army, Shatrughn asked Sumati - "In which kingdom we nave arrived? Its army seems great in number." Sumati said - "We have come in Chakraankaa Nagaree. Here live such people who have become sinless by worshipping Vishnu. King Subaahu is the King of the same city. He loves his own wife only and never looks at any other woman. He listens only Vishnu related stories, never any other one. He never takes more than 1/6th part of his people's income. He always worships Braahman. There is nobody like him in might. At this time he has come here hearing his son's fall.

Shatrughn said to his army - "Subaahu has organized his army in Kraunch Vyooh (manner), who among you can break this Vyooh?"

Lakshmeenidhi vowed to break the Vyooh and went to fight. Suketu, Subaahu's brother, was standing in front, Lakshmeenidhi introduced himself as the son of king Janak and asked him to return the Yagya horse to them. But Suketu started showering arrows on Bharat's army. Lakshmeenidhi also shot several arrows at Suketu, killed his horses, cut his flag, killed his Saarathee and broke Suketu's bow. Now Suketu climbed down from his chariot and came to Lakshmeenidhi carrying his Gadaa. Both fought with Gadaa. Once Suketu caught Lakshmeenidhi's Gadaa and he hit Lakshmeenidhi's chest with the same Gadaa. Seeing his Gadaa in enemy's hands, Lakshmeenidhi thought to fight with hands and both started fighting with hands only. Fighting like thus they both got fainted."

Now Chitraang, Subaahu's son, came to fight. Pushkal came to face him. Chitraang flew his chariot in the sky. When Pushkal came down on the ground, he destroyed Chitraang's chariot and got ready to shoot an arrow to kill Chitraang. Chitraang said - "People come and go, I am not worried about that, but if I had not destroyed your this arrow I should be considered sinner." Pushkal also said - "If I do not take your life with this arrow then I should be counted as a sinner, and if I have worshipped Shree Raam faithfully then my speech should prove true." and immediately he shot an arrow to cut Chitraang's head, but Chitraang cut that arrow. Everybody got surprised to see this, but the then another surprising thing happened. The hinder part of the cut arrow fell on the ground, and the front part of the arrow, in which the arrowhead was still there, proceeded and cut Chitraang's head.

Subaahu started lamenting for his son. At that time Princes Vichitra and Daman came and consoled him saying - "Do not grieve so much for him, he is blessed who is killed in battleground. Please order us to fight and you yourself also rise to fight." They all again started fighting. Hanumaan saw Subaahu fighting filled with anger, so he came quickly towards him. Subaahu shot some arrows but Hanumaan caught them in between and broke them in several pieces. He tied Subaahu's chariot by his tail and flew away carrying it. Subaahu tried to cut his tail but Hanumaan then hit Subaahu's chest with his foot. Subaahu fell down and got unconscious.

In the same unconscious state he saw Raam in dream that Raam was doing a Yagya at the shore of Sarayoo River. Many Rishi are present there, and whatever things are in this world all have been given by Raam. He woke up and walked towards Hanumaan. He asked his sons also to stop fighting. He said - "Stop this fight. It was very injustice that you caught Raam's horse. He is Brahm in person and is beyond action and reason. He is not human being in spite of being a human being. Knowing Him in this form is Brahm Gyaan. I have understood this Tattwa now. My knowledge was destroyed because of Asitaang Muni's Shaap. And so he surrendered to Shatrughna.

PART-4
Fight with Vidyunmaalee, A friend of Raavan

Now the horse came to Tejpur. There lived the king Satyavaan. Gangaa River was flowing there.
As the horse entered the city, the King's servant informed the King that Raam's horse had come in the city. He said to himself, "Oh, Raam's horse has come in my city? Then Hanumaan Jee should also be there with him, so let me also go there." He ordered his minister to bring his all wealth and follow him. He came to Shatrughn, fell on his feet and offered everything to him. Thus Satyavaan also followed the horse.
Thus millions of chariots were going with Shatrughn, Hanumaan, Subaahu, and Satyavaan etc following Raam's horse, that a darkness fell around. Vidyunmaalee Raakshas came there with his army. He was Raavan's well wisher (he was Taarak's son). He stole the horse and after a while the darkness was gone. They asked one another, "Where is the horse?". As they were asking one another, that they saw Vidyunmaalee sitting on his Vimaan and other Raakshas were around him on their chariots. One soldier said to Shatrughn - "A Raakshas has caught the horse. Do whatever you can do." So he asked his minister again - "To who we should appoint to fight with this Raakshas?" Sumati said - "We have only Pushkal who can face him." Then Pushkal, Hanumaan including Shatrughn took vow to kill him and headed to fight with him.
Seeing them coming he said - "Oh, Where is Raam? He killed my friend. Today I will kill him and his brother and take revenge of Raavan's killing." Both parties started fighting. Pushkal felled Vidyunmaalee, so his brother Ugradhanashtra came and hit his trident in Pushkal's chest and he fell down. Seeing this Hanumaan got angry and fought with him. Then Shatrughn came there and used Mohan Astra to cut Raakshasee Maayaa. Then he used Vaayavya Astra which felled many other Raakshas. Then Vidyunmaalee used Paashupat Astra and Shatrughn used Naaraayan Astra which pacified all other Astra of Raakshas. Seeing this Vidyunmaalee used his trident which Shatrughn cut in a moment and then cut his neck also. Seeing his brother killed Ugradanshtra ran towards Shatrughn, but Shatrughn killed him also. After both Raakshas were killed their soldiers returned the horse."

PART-5
Disappearance of horse in a river

Then, one day, after coming to the shore of the River Reva, the horse jumped into the water and did not again come to the surface. The guardians of the horse were confused about what to do. Finally,Shatrughna arrived there. After hearing about what had happened, he entered the water, along with Pushkala and Hanuman. There, within the river, Shatrughna saw a beautiful city, having many nice gardens. He also saw Rama's horse, tied to a golden stake.Nearby was seen many excellent ladies, waiting upon another lady, who was seated upon a couch. When they saw Shatrughna and his companions, the ladies said to the queen, "These three will make excellent food for you. They are well-nourished, and so their blood will certainly be very sweet.Upon hearing this, the queen laughed. The three then approached the ladies, who shone brilliantly, and offered their respects.

The queen said- "Who are you, that have come here? My place is inaccessible, even to the demigods. One who comes here never returns. To whom does this horse belong? Please tell me everything.

Hanuman replied - "We are servants of the king, Lord Rama, to whom this horse belongs. The king is reparing to perform a horse-sacrifice. Now, you must release the horse. We are all skilled in the use of weapons and we are prepared to kill anyone who obstructs the horse's journey.

The queen laughed and said-"No one will be able to free this horse, kept by me. But, don't worry, for I am also a servant of Lord Rama. Since I now understand that the horse belongs to Rama, I consider myself to be an offender. I pray that Lord Rama will pardon me. Now, you can ask for a benediction, so that your king will be pleased with me.

Hanuman replied- "By Lord Rama's mercy, we find everything very nice. Still, I will ask this benediction. May we have Rama as our Lord, birth after birth.

Again the lady laughed and then said- "Whatever you desire will surely take place. Later on, King Viramani, under the protection of

Lord Shiva, will seize your horse. Now, you may take a wonderful weapon from me that will enable you to conquer that king. Shatrughna, you should fight with Viramani in a single combat, riding upon chariots. When you release this weapon, the king will realize Rama's true position and so voluntarily return the horse to you.

Shatrughna received that wonderful weapon from the queen. Thereafter, he took the challenge-horse and rose out of the water, onto the shore. Upon seeing this, all of the soldiers, who had waited by the side of the river, were highly delighted.
