Pray to play

Gurmeet Chaudhry and Debina Bannerjee relate their experiences of playing Ram and Sita

Divine company Gurmeet Chaudhry and Debina Bannerjee

Born into a family of Ram devotees and worshipping the epic hero since childhood, Gurmeet Chaudhry, who plays the role of Ram on NDTV Imagine's Ramayan, seems to be living his dream every day on the sets.Talking of the importance of religion and connection with God, Gurmeet expresses his concern over the competitive times we are going through. "In the end we all turn to Him and I believe such serials play a crucial role in rebuilding our sanskar, particularly the values and morals that mould our personality."

With a two-year theatre experience and having worked in South Indian movies and television serials, Gurmeet says he was thrilled when Sagar Arts approached him for the role.

"The director told me on the first day how to walk, talk, behave and carry myself in a godly manner," recounts Gurmeet, bowled over by the technically-stronger Ramayan. "If you see how the God of the sea comes out seeking forgiveness from Ram, it's a visual treat. The animation has brought alive the emotions," he adds.

Playing the immortal character of Sita, Debina Bannerjee sees a contemporary woman in the role. "Facing the evil strongly without breaking down is considered to be a present-day woman's ability, but we have learnt it all from the age-old traditions of storytelling and epics. That is why I believe Ramayan has so much to offer to the youth," says Debina. She feels that the advanced technology has made the epic more appealing than the one telecast 20 years ago.

Ravans today

Calling terrorists who for their selfish interests go killing the innocent the Ravans of today, Debina enjoys her time on the sets with her friends who play Ram and Laxman.

"A relation automatically develops when you spend so much time together," she relates.

Finding a parallel between the character and her real self, Debina says, "Sita was an ideal woman, daughter, wife and mother. In my current phase of life I am an obedient child of my parents who mean the world to me."

MUMBAI, July 18: Actors Gurmeet Chaudhary and Debina Banerjee who play Ram and Sita respectively in 'Ramayan' on NDTV Imagine have strongly defended remake of the mythological epic, which was first made by Ramanand Sagar production house twenty years ago.

Talking here today, they said production quality of the remake is excellent due to technological advancements and computer graphics.

"A generation has passed since the epic was first telecast on Doordarshan. The present generation under the age of 20-25 years have not seen the previous serial. It is this reason the Ramanand Sagar production company decided to make it again," said Gurmeet.

According to Debina, even the audience who watched the previous Ramayan have strongly related to the present one and were ardent followers of the serial, despite the fact that there are so many channels.

She said due to the technology, several incidents have been authentically presented.

The show which began telecast on NDTV Imagine since the channel went on air is now reaching its climax where Lord Hanuman has come in search of Sita and found her in 'Ashok Vatika'.

Gurmeet said NDTV Imagine reached the third position among entertainment channels in the first week of its launch. "It speaks volumes of Ramayan's reach among the audience and shows that the remake too has been accepted by the people," he added.

When asked if he feared whether featuring as Lord Ram would have an adverse effect on his career graph just like Arun Govil was not accepted in any other role after Ramayan, Gurmeet said the audience of today is smart enough.

"The audience knows I am just an actor. Twenty years ago, the scene was different. There was only one channel which commanded huge viewership and Arun Govil was even considered god by some of the audience," Gurmeet said.

To a question on their future plans, both Gurmeet and Debina said their focus was completely on portraying their roles in 'Ramayan'. Both the actors featured in 3-D television show 'Mayavi' in Tamil before auditioning for 'Ramayan'. (PTI)

nice interview...
in most of the interview Gurmeet quote this
"The audience knows I am just an actor. Twenty years ago, the scene was different. There was only one channel which commanded huge viewership and Arun Govil was even considered god by some of the audience,
I wonder he must not have seen the Ramayan Forum where many of his fans consider or sees him as God.....
I believe he forget that character of Ram is not just relate to people's mind but through their soul, so even if the portrayal of Ram's character will be done after 20yrs frm. now and actor able to bring the same skills as Gurmmet or Arun Govil people will then also consider him as God....
