Thanks!! New chapter coming today!!!
Hey! Here's the 4th chapter of my story. Sorry for making Asad a complete idiot🤣.
Note: Phoopi's attacker has been arrested. Let's just say Rashid Miyan found out😉. Also, this chapter will be focused on Zoya's feelings in the first half, then on Asad's feelings in the second.
Enjoy!
The Heart and the Mind
Chapter 4: Regrets and Wishes
He...he was about to say 'yes. He was about to say 'yes. He was...about to say 'yes.
The mere stammer kept ringing in her ears.
He wants me to go. What was I thinking? That Mr. Khan would change his mind about me once he's apologized? I'm such an idiot for thinking that he'll change. He's the same cold-hearted human I met about a month ago. Does he want me out of his miserable life? So be it. If...if that's what makes him happy, then I'll leave. For good. And this time, no one and nothing is going to change my mind.
She walked out of her room, hoping no one would notice her puffy eyes.
"Hello, Phoopi! What's for dinner?"
"Fried Fish! Tanu's favorite!" Dilshad happily declared. Zoya naturally scowled.
She set the table and everyone came together for having dinner, including Mr. Khan. It was just paining. He was sitting there and talking, having dinner, teasing Najma, and acting as if nothing had even happened!
The audacity of this man!
Zoya couldn't take this bipolar behavior of Asad's.
First, he hugs me like never before! Showing so much care, and now he-he just wants me to leave?! Does nothing affect him? Our hug that night didn't mean anything to him? Was the 'crying' just a farce to pacify Phoopi? Allah Miya, I can't take this anymore!
She quickly gobbled up whatever was on her plate, earning a few disgusted looks from Asad and Tanveer, and hurried away to her room.
She slowly clicked the door shut, despite wanting to slam it closed. Crying softly, she sunk to the floor. All the pent-up feelings from the last few days were tumbling outwards.
A while later
Zoya was walking to her favorite bench in the mini-garden. She loved sitting there and listening to the bittersweet tune from her music box. She was about to enter the garden when she heard some voices coming from the same bench.
"Jammy, here's your coffee."
Coffee?! But that's our thing!
"Thanks, Tanu, by the way, can you help me with something?"
"Sure Jammy! What is it?"
"Did I do the right thing? Apologizing to her?"
Zoya's heart leaped, he was talking about her!
"Jammy, you know how she is. Always thinks she's right."
You bitch!
"I was really angry at the moment, that's why-"
"Jammy your actions were justified! She always pokes her nose in things she doesn't understand!"
What do you think YOU'RE doing NOW you little-
"You're right I guess."
She frowned at Asad from behind the bush she'd found as a hiding place. She couldn't believe this guy!
"Jammy, I was just curious, how long is she staying here?"
"Not for long I guess. I mean, she's just a guest so, how long does she expect me to keep up with her nonsense?"
Zoya's face fell ghostly pale.
He wants me to leave. Do I mean nothing to him? Why Allah Miya? Why do you have to take away everyone I love-
Zoya's eyes widened in realization. She loved him. Wait...she loved him?! Is that why everything he said about her hurt so much?
No. This can't be happening. I can't love him! He's against everything I stand for! I-I can't fall in love with him! He hates me!
She ran into her room wiping her tears and trying to fathom what she'd just heard. Zoya stumbled into the bathroom to rinse her face and set her mind straight. But her mind was adamant. She came out of the bathroom and sunk on the soft surface of her bed
No. It must be just a crush or something. I mean, after all, he's a good-looking guy! No, there's no way I love him. He wants me to leave. Why on earth would I love him? He doesn't want me in his house.
Zoya almost cried out loud at the thought of leaving them behind, but she had no choice. She felt as if she was once again, in the tiny storage room at the hospital. Trapped, with no one to comfort her. Alone in this miserable world. Confused and hurt, unable to make a decision.
She shut her eyes tight and began rocking back and forth with her legs tightly folded against her chest, her arms wrapped around them. She started hyperventilating, the stress was entirely too much. She couldn't think straight. The memories with Mr. Khan came flooding back to her. Mangalpur, their first meeting, everything. She shook her head to clear those thoughts.
No no no! I can't! Even if I somehow DO. He'll never accept me! I'm just a misfit and a guest to him. I...I mean nothing to him. Nothing. Even if he means the world to me. I'll never be enough.
Yes, Zoya had accepted her love for Mr. Khan. But fear lurked in her heart. Fear always seemed to come back to her. And just like that, due to extreme emotions, her past slowly crept into her mind. The feeling that you're alone, and no one is there to save you held her heart.
Soon the fiery events of her past started flashing before her eyes. The cries of her Ammi burning in the fire rang in her ears. She started sweating.
"AMMI!" she screamed out loud.
Hearing the bloodcurdling scream, Dilshad came running into Zoya's room with Najma and Asad behind her.
"ZOYA!" they shrieked together. Dilshad quickly sat down on Zoya's bed and put an arm around her, trying to shake her awake.
"I'm alone, in the building. She's gone. Everyone's gone. I'm so alone. So alone." Zoya was whispering to herself in the most heart-wrenching voice. Asad was heartbroken. How can she be so happy with so much hurt inside her? His eyes started welling up with tears.
"Shh, Zoya. You're not alone. We're here with you okay? Look I'm here!" Dilshad said, her voice cracking. She gently placed Zoya's head on her lap and motioned Najma to get a glass of water. Zoya's breaths slowly came to a normal pace. She sat up straight and looked helplessly at Dilshad.
"Zoya, are you okay?" Came a deep voice from near the door. Zoya's anger and hurt floated up to the surface but she tried to bury it down.
"What are you doing here Mr. Khan?" Her voice was ice cold.
"Miss Farooqui, you screamed! How could I not be here?" He replied bewildered.
"Can...can you please leave Phoopi and me alone?" she asked him, coldly. His expression hinted that he was hurt, but she brushed it off. Remembering his words in the garden. Asad nodded and left, closing the door behind him.
"It's okay Zoya, I'm here. Tell me what you want to say."
"Phoopi, I'm leaving," she stated. The words burned her throat as they came out. Those were the words Zoya never hoped she would say. Dilshad sighed sadly.
"He's hurt you again hasn't he?"
Zoya nodded.
"But Phoopi, this time it just..Can't be ignored. I can't stay like this forever. I promise I will call you every day!"
"But please ek baar soch lo. Mat jao na Zoya." Dilshad said in a teary voice.
"Please Phoopi, I have to do this. I-I can't bear to see him so in despair because of my prolonged stay! I...I've fallen for him Phoopi and I know there's no coming back. But I can't keep crying over mistakes I haven't even made!" Zoya tried to reason.
"I understand. You need to stand strong in face of my emotionally challenged, idiotic son!" Dilshad chuckled. And they burst into laughs, forgetting their tears for a night.
On the next morning
"Good morning Khala!" Tanveer chanted in a sugar-coated voice.
"Good morning Tanveer, vaise Zoya kahan hai?" Dilshad expected Zoya to chime in with her "Morning Shayri" as she called it.
"Pata nahi Khala, she might be sleeping, I got up to get some water around midnight and her room's light was still on."
Dilshad felt a whoosh of sadness. Zoya was packing already?
"Good morning Ammi." a deep voice called out from the living room. "Miss Farooqui isn't up yet?" He wanted a glimpse of her. Just one glimpse.
"Nahi" Dilshad said curtly and continued cooking breakfast for everyone. Asad stared at her confused.
Ab AMMI ko kya hua?
"Good Morning everyone!" Came Zoya's voice from the door of her room. She yawned and went near the kitchen.
Asad's day was made.
★ ★ ★
Asad was going to his room after the evening tea when he heard Zoya's chirpy voice laughing. He smiled unknowingly. He started walking towards the garden, towards the direction of her voice. He stood near the entrance of the garden, hidden behind a mini spruce tree.
"Yes, Jeeju! Don't worry, I've packed everything. I just need to say my goodbyes by tomorrow." Zoya's voice got thick with unshed tears towards the end of the sentence.
Asad stood there, unable to move.
She's going? B-by tomorrow?!
"Yeah Jeeju, this time I'm not gonna cancel. I'm leaving for real."
Asad's heart shattered. But his mind built walls around it.
Get a grip, Asad! She's a guest, she was bound to leave anyways.
He slowly turned around and made his way to his room. Asad dropped down on his bed and buried his face in his hands. Unable to think about anything but Zoya.
Her messy habits, her shayris, her tinkling laugh, her dazzling smile, her dimples, her beautiful eyes, her raven black hair, her pink plump lips, her sheer beauty, and innocence...all would be gone. Just like that. Unknown to him, tears were forming in his eyes. He blinked them away and lied down, trying to sleep. But sleep had no intention of coming upon him. He tossed and turned all night, a laughing, smiling Zoya disturbing his dreams.
★★★
Asad couldn't focus on his work all day! All he could think of was Zoya leaving! Suddenly, he remembered something Ayaan had told him one day.
Flashback
Ayaan sneaked in through the half-moon window and jumped into his brother's arms.
"Kaise ho Bhaijaan!!" He whisper-screamed.
"What's going on with you Ayaan? Found yourself a certain someone have we?"
"No Bhaijaan. Not yet anyway..." Ayaan trailed off. Asad looked at him curiously.
"Bhaijaan, I want to find someone so special to me, that I won't be able to stop thinking about her you know?" Ayaan said in a dreamy voice.
"That's just some of the stuff I found out from this YouTuber called 'The Cupid'. He said it was one of the 'symptoms of being in love!"
Asad rolled his eyes at his idiot of a brother.
Flashback ends
Asad's eyes grew wide.
No no I must be kidding myself. I can't be in LOVE. Can I? I hate her and she hates me! We're opposites. But why is it so hard for me to see her leave? She's nothing but trouble. She's selfish and messy. I don't understand. How can this be happening? I hate her messy ways, I hate her cute antics, I hate her silly shayris, I hate those beautiful brown eyes, I hate those perfect lips, I hate her silken hair, I hate her pretty dimples, I- wait a minute what?
Asad was now properly confused. He just couldn't stop thinking about her!
Silently, he made up his mind.
He needed to talk to Ammi...NOW. He swiftly got up from his desk and marched out of his cabin. He told Prasad over his shoulder that he was taking an early leave. Rushing down to the car parking, Asad almost tripped and fell, but he was desperate to get home and clear out his feelings for Zoya. He slammed the car door shut and drove off towards his home.
Asad reached home quite fast, due to mostly green signals on the way. Thanking Allah, he sprinted to the main door.
Asad clicked the door open and entered the house.
"Ammi!"
"Asad beta! You're home early today, how nice. Wait I'll get you some water." Dilshad smiled at him.
"Wait Ammi I need to talk to you," Asad said. He noticed Zoya wasn't around.
"And...um...where's Zo- Miss Farooqui?"
"You forgot? She left, Asad. This morning itself!" Dilshad told him sadly, tears slowly taking form in her eyes, and Asad's too.
She...she left?!
His world had just come crashing down.

I’m so glad Asya have realised their feelings and can’t wait for them to confess!

The Heart and the Mind
Chapter 5: Of Truth and Love
"Woh...woh chali gayi?" Asad asked his Ammi incredulously.
"Yes Asad, she's gone. Isn't that what you wanted since a long time?" Dilshad's voice rang through the Khan Villa. Asad's heart sank miserably.
"A-Ammi but-"
"NO Asad," Dilshad cut him off. "Don't say you're sorry now, it won't make a difference." Dilshad said sharply. Asad's eyes held evident tears, but Dilshad was with Zoya on this. It was becoming impossible to believe that Asad had hurt her so severely. Not physically, but mentally Zoya was shattered.
"A-Ammi please, can I talk to you alone?" Asad asked, his voice breaking. He saw Tanveer lurking around behind a pillar. What was up with her these days?
"Okay, let's go." Dilshad nodded.
The moment they entered his room Asad shut the door abruptly, hoping to let Tanveer know he didn't want any disturbance.
"What is it Asad?"
"Ammi...woh..."
"Hai Allah! Yeh ladka bhi na...bolo na Asad! Just speak it out and you'll feel much better." Dilshad was genuinely irritated.
"Ammi, something really weird was happening with me at the office." Asad finally let it out.
Dilshad nodded him to continue, having a faint idea where this was going.
"It...it's about Miss Farooqui, I-I couldn't stop thinking about her! Everything was reminding me of her. Everything about her was just coming before my eyes!" He paused, swallowing the lump in his throat. "Every time I hurt her, I feel miserable too. It's like I feel what she feels, I don't know what's happening to me Ammi I-"
"Asad, I think we both know what this is." Dilshad placed a warm hand on his shoulder.
"W-what do you mean Ammi?"
"My son is in love!" she exclaimed.
"WHAT? No, that's impossible! I mean- she's the opposite of me."
"That's why you need her Asad."
Asad fell silent. In his heart he'd accepted he was in love with Zoya.
"For once Asad, listen to your heart." Dilshad consoled him. Asad nodded and smiled at her.
I'm in love with Zoya? I. Am. In. Love. With. Zoya.
He said the sentence word by word in his mind to register it. Dilshad smiled sadly at her son and slowly left.
I'm in love with Zoya! I'M IN LOVE WITH ZOYA!
A small smile formed on his face, but soon turned into a frown. She'd left. There was no chance he could meet her now.
"B-but Ammi, she's gone." He called out, not realizing his Ammi had left.
Zoya's gone. I'll probably never see her again. Why...why was I such an idiot?
Asad wanted to slap himself for what he'd done to her. The thought that she might never forgive him gripped his heart. Silent tears of regret trailed down his face as he stood facing the half-moon shaped window. The stars were twinkling glamourously alongside a bright full moon. Reminding him about that fateful night when she fell into his arms, but he'd been too blind to see the miracle in his arms. He closed his eyes, letting the tears flow. The gentle melody that had floated in through the same window, leading him to the most beautifully sad sight he'd ever seen, was ringing in his ears. Her crystal tears were enough to melt his stone heart. He sighed, holding in a sob as he walked to wards his bed.
He laid down on his bed and stared at the ceiling remembering everything he could about her. Her tinkling laugh was the thing he loved the most. Asad soon dozed off in a peaceful slumber, Zoya visiting his dreams yet once again.
Meanwhile in New York
"APIIIIII!!!!" Zoya squealed, coming out from the airport gates. She ran to her Api and pulled her into a tight hug. Zeenat pulled out from the hug and wiped her tears, cupping Zoya's face.
"Kaisi hai meri bachhi?"
"I'm good Api! Wait, where's Jeeju?!"
"He's waiting near the car, chalo, let's go home."
Zoya's heart clenched at the word 'home'. They walked dragging Zoya's suitcase on the gravel to their car, where Anwar was waiting. He was on the phone, it seemed quite important because he told them to wait in the car for a few minutes while he talked.
About 10 minutes later he swaggered back to the car smiling.
"Zoyaaaa! How are you bachha? How was the stay there?"
"It was AMAZING Jeeju! I loved everyone there!"
"Oh! Everyone is it?" Anwar winked at Zoya, causing Zeenat to roll her eyes.
"Y-yes Jeeju. Everyone." Zoya said, her voice breaking. Anwar and Zeenat stared at her wide-eyed.
"Zoya, you...I'm sorry." Anwar quickly apologized, she was like a younger sister to him. It hurt him to see her so saddened.
"I'it's okay Jeeju. H-he doesn't like me anyways." Zoya stared out of the window absent-mindedly. Anwar was curious to know what had exactly happened between the two.
Dilshad had called him just minutes ago, telling him about Zoya's state and Asad's real feelings about her. That's why he had told them to wait in the car.
They reached their apartment in half an hour. After about an hour or two more of unpacking and settling down, the small family sat down for dinner. Anwar was still worried about Zoya and decided to clear out his doubts.
"Zoya, you were really silent during the ride home. That's a rare phenomena!" Anwar chuckled lightly, hoping to lift the mood. But it was no use. Zoya gave him a weak smile and continued eating. They finished dinner soon and sat down on the sofa in their living room. Anwar was getting more worried by the second, he looked at Zeenat helplessly. Zeenat nodded and encouraged him to ask Zoya.
"Zoya, I'm going to ask you something, can you please answer truthfully?" Anwar enquired.
Zoya nodded slowly. Tearing her eyes off the TV to look at Jeeju.
"Okay, Zoya, do you have feelings for Asad?"
"Jeeju, what are you saying?"
"Zoya, answer the question please."
"Y-yes but he doesn't-"
"And just how do you know that?" Anwar was losing patience.
"I know Jeeju. He likes Tanveer, his childhood best friend. Technically, she's perfect for him. Prim and proper, quiet, doesn't...doesn't wear jeans." Zoya's tears were threatening to burst out.
Anwar took Zoya's hand in his and squeezed it assuringly.
"And...and what if I tell you he's fallen for you?"
Zoya scoffed, "I'd say you're kidding Jeeju. How can someone who raised their hand on me fall in love with me?"
"WHAT?" Anwar bellowed. Zeenat placed a hand on his shoulder to calm him down.
"He raised his hand on you?" he asked in a dangerously quiet voice.
Zoya nodded.
"Why didn't you tell me this? And when did this happen?"
"It-it was when Phoopi was shot. In the hospital, he was really angry so...so he-" Zoya sobbed. Anwar's hands balled into fists.
"He thought I was the one who brought Mariam back and- Jeeju I didn't do any-any-thin-thing. Please it's n-not my fault!" She broke down on Anwar's shoulder. Anwar thumped her on the back comfortingly. She cried and she cried until she fell asleep on the sofa. Anwar was trying to think from both sides, Zoya's and Asad's.
Zeenat brought out Zoya's blanket from her room and tucked her in.
"A-Anwar, what do we to about her now?" Zeenat asked, looking at Zoya. She wasn't looking peaceful in her sleep, as she always did.
"Asad's anger has always gotten the best of him, Dilshad told me he stayed distanced from her because he was afraid he'd hurt her, like his father had done to Dilshad. But his distance is what hurt our Zoya. No, he shouldn't have hit her. It was wrong of him to do that, but...but I think he deserves a chance." Anwar said curtly.
He'd given this matter a great deal of thought, and decided that if Asad truly loved her, he deserved a second chance. It's just a matter of time.
"She just needs some time Zeenat. She'll come around."
Zeenat nodded and went to their bedroom to sleep.
After about 3 months in Bhopal
Asad had been miserable for the last 3 months. He had tried calling Zoya over and over but she would never pick up. She only always called her Phoopi. But whenever Dilshad passed the phone on to her son, Zoya would abruptly cut the call. Dilshad couldn't do anything but look at Asad apologetically.
His house seemed quiet, colourless, lifeless. His only place of happiness were his dreams. He'd imagine Zoya lying beside him, dazzling smile and all.
Ayaan was visiting him often. He would sneak in through the window, only to find his brother reminiscing about the love of his life. Ayaan helped Asad by just listening to him. He could tell Asad had fallen deeply in love with Zoya. All his brother would talk about was Zoya, Zoya, Zoya, his family, and Zoya.
One night just like the previous ones, Ayaan was in the mini-garden, in the process of sneaking into his brother's room. But a certain voice caught the attention of his ears.
"I'll come sometime later for the checkup, why can't you understand!"
Ayaan tip-toed up to the entrance of the living room, where the voice was coming from. The voice belonged to Tanveer, his Bhaijaan's childhood best friend. Since he was prone to quick thinking, Ayaan swiftly brought out his phone and pressed the record button.
"Yes I KNOW! I've been taking the pills you gave me for controlling the initial vomiting." She paused as the person at the opposite end spoke.
"No! Don't send the pregnancy reports to this address, I'll receive them at the address I'll be sending you shortly."
Tanveer is PREGNANT?! I have to tell Bhaijaan...no wait, I can't put more stress on him, he's already broken enough without Zoya.
Ayaan saved the video in his phone for later and scurried away to his brother's room, to find him crying uncontrollably. He saw there was something shiny and golden in his hand.
"Assalam-Waleikum Bhaijaan! What's that?" He asked pointing at the shiny thing.
"This...this was Zoya's earring. I found it stuck in my shirt's sleeve when-when I had rescued her from a goon." Asad's voice was weak, he felt like he was nothing without her. Ayaan placed his hand on Asad's shoulder.
"Bhai, why don't you go to her?"
"I can't, Ayaan, I can't leave Ammi and Najma alone here." Asad's voice was a mere whisper.
"Bhai, just take them with you! I'm sure they'll be happy to come along."
"I-I'll try.."
Ayaan nodded encouragingly, and got up to leave but was held back by Asad's strong hand.
"Ayaan, thank you. Thank you so much." Asad's eyes were glistening with tears.
"It's fine Bhaijaan, you're my Bhai, what else can I do except being there for you!" Ayaan pulled him into a warm hug. Asad cried on his brother's shoulder, thanking Allah for giving him such a caring brother. Ayaan waved goodbye and disappeared out of the window.
Asad was left sitting there, eyes red and puffy from all his crying. Out of nowhere, his phone rang, it was Ayaan.
"Ayaan, you just left! Is there a problem?"
"BHAI! An amazing idea popped into my head, listen, what if you go to NY and find Zoya, and I stay here to take care of Dilshad Ammi and Najma? I mean, if you wanna go alone that is."
"A-Ayaan are you sure?" Asad asked, a bubble of hope swelling inside him.
"Yes, actually I asked Abbu, and he said he can cover it up!" Ayaan's voice blasted from the other side.
"Okay, okay. I'll tell you what my decision is tomorrow- actually you know what, I'll book the tickets for the 15th of December. That's about three days away. That's enough time for me to pack and you to get ready. I'll tell Ammi and Najma first thing in the morning tomorrow."
"Kya baat hai Bhaijaan, you're getting spontaneous under the spell of love." Ayaan's voice teased.
"Ayaan, cut the call and get to work. And yeah, thank you, again." Asad cut the call, rolling his eyes and sat on his bed.
Get ready Miss Farooqui. Your Christmas miracle is on the way.
