CHAPTER-4
The sky darkened a little more with dark secrets of past as two hearts, filled with love and agony, started to beat erratic rhythm after two long years of separation. The air around those two souls thickened to a choking limit as the ghosts of some anticipated but dreaded truths floated around them, threatening to appear in their true font any moment and change everything upside down. Everything in their surrounding disappeared and they felt as if cocooned in some another dimension where time stood and nothing else than the whispers of their mingled breaths and the joined murmurs of their dark orbs and thumping hearts could be felt.
While Asad's eyes helplessly pleaded Zoya's to voice the untold truths of her heart, her eyes veiled the endless depths of her brown orbs with the clouds of heart-wrenching emotions. The growing intensity of each passing moment was making it difficult to keep their eyes locked but at the same time it was proving to be an impossible task to break it. After standing there like that for what felt like eternity, Zoya finally tore her gaze away from him. Drawing in a shaky breath, she stepped away from him and turned around to go. But before she could take a step away from him, she felt a gentle yet firm grip on her wrist and the next thing she could understand was a pull which made her crash with the familiar wall of hard muscles. Clutching his shirt in a tight grip to steady herself, she peeked upwards through the thick curtain of her eyelashes and the moment her eyes met his, she understood how big a mistake she had made as his gaze burned her soul in the flames of deepest agony. His hand securely circled her waist and she swallowed hard when she finally heard him speak in a voice, heavy with unlashed emotions.
-" Why are you doing this to yourself, to us Zoya? I know all this is paining you much more than it is paining me. Then why are you torturing us both with your silence and ignorance? Please speak up Zoya. Please." Asad's begging words radiated nothing but pure love and concern which pained an already miserable Zoya, beyond measure. Before she could bring herself to reply, she found herself being twirled twice and twirled out. Both of them faced away from each other as their joined hands kept them connected. Zoya's swaying a little from this action and she could feel a light headache coming up again which she ignored stubbornly. Closing her eyes, she gathered the last torn shreds of courage left in her to lie again in a futile hope to end their conversation before it went out of control and also to calm down her raging heart.
-"I have said before too and I am saying it again that you are mistaken Mr. Khan. There is nothing like you are saying. I have nothing to say." Zoya said while desperately trying to control her shuddering breath as well as hammering heart.
An inaudible gasp left her lips as he twirled her in, in response, causing her back to come in contact with his front. His each hand locked with one hand of hers and his hold on her tightened a little more, unconsciously.
-"I guess you are forgetting Ms. Farooqui that just like you can read me, unfortunately I can also read you inside out and that's why I can clearly feel the burning ache behind your cold words." Asad feathery grazed the side of her neck which was exposed, with his nose-tip and his warm breath tingled her skin, havocking a wild-fire of emotions within her, crumbling her defense thread by thread with every moment in flow. Zoya's heartbeats joined in some mad rush as it slammed her ribcage. She fought to keep her eyes open which were fluttering close at his close proximity and the thick air of intense emotions didn't help her either. Her headache was increasing and her breathing was so heavy that it seemed difficult to continue with it.
Asad turned her around again, without breaking the contact and gently touched his forehead with Zoya's who still had her eyes closed. A small tugged at the corner of his lips seeing her expression and some fond memories came rushing back. Gently cupping her face in his warm palms, he murmured -
-"what is the reason which is forcing you to stay away from Zoya? What happened two years ago Zoya"
His concerned whisper broke Zoya out of her dazed state and her eyes snapped open. A myriad of emotions played on her face as horrifying scars of past and fears of future covered her mind. She took a couple of steps backwards and then turning away from him, started to run, only to be stopped by him who caught hold of her hand in his. He bridged the distance between them with slow, measured steps and with each advance of his, her breathing quickened a little more. Finally standing right behind her with their bodies lightly touching each other, he snaked his hand around her petite form. Zoya's headache was stronger than before. She clutched his hands for the support to keep standing as her legs felt like jelly. Her eyes were half closed and her breathing demanded inhuman strength to continue its work.
-"Please don't punish me like this Zoya. Please." Asad pleaded in a broken whisper which held so much pain that it constricted her heart, twisting it in a mess of painful knots.
-"Why don't you understand it Mr. Khan that these questions of yours are hurting me beyond anything you can imagine. It is already so much difficult for me to stay away from you. Why are you increasing my difficulties by asking these questions which I can't answer? Why?" A defeated whisper escaped her lips as she tried for the last time to prevent the revelation of those cursed truths. Though her gut told her that there was no way to escape it today but still she fought for the last time.
-"I will make everything alright Zoya. Just tell me what is paining you and I promise that I will even give up my life to protect you from any harm. Trust me Zoya." Zoya's words showed him a ray of hope and holding onto it, he wanted to assure her with every fiber of his being that he would protect her, no matter what.
A sad smile crept up Zoya's lips as she smiled at the cruel joke destiny had made their life with just this one fatal blow of truth. She knew that one day the truth had to come out and may be today was the day. Taking a deep breath and wiping the lone tear drop which left her eyes with the back of her hand, she turned around to finally disclose the biggest truth of their existences to him which once destroyed their lives seventeen years ago and again did the same two years ago. It was the hour of truth.
Asad who was happy at first that Zoya was finally opening up, suddenly felt like it was the worst idea to approach this topic as his gaze landed on Zoya's blood-shot, tear-filled eyes. But it was too late for him to change the topic as before he could utter anything, heard Zoya speaking the words which stunned him to the core.
-"will you say the same if I tell you that I am the daughter of the person who destroyed your family years ago? Will you stick to your promise if I say that I am the daughter of the person whom you hate the most? Will you still feel the same about me if I say that I am the elder daughter of Mr. Gaffur Ahmad Siddiqui?"
