"DOBARA" - A SAHIL TS
Part 1
*"Dost Dost Na Raha...Pyaar Pyaar Na Raha...Zindagi Humain Tera..Aitebaar Na Raha...Aitebaar Na Raha..."
"Rehan!"..."Rehan!"...
A woman's voice resonated down a corridor of the Mall. Aahil froze as he thought he recognized that voice. "No, it can't be" he thought to himself. "She can't be here!".He was rooted to the spot he was standing on, and turned his head in the direction of the voice. Out of the corner of his eyes he saw a small boy. He was running. He had a mop of curly hair, and fair skin, but what struck him were the eyes, those big expressive brown eyes. He would recognize them anywhere. They were his eyes. Eyes he had not seen in nearly 3 years. Aahil swallowed as he saw a women appear behind the little boy. He saw a pair of feet that were wearing yellow ballet flats. She was wearing blue jeans, and as he lifted his eyes further up, he saw the beginnings of a white shirt. As Aahil lifted his gaze further he saw her face. His eyes grew wide. It was her! Shock made it difficult for Aahil to react for a few seconds. But then Aahil quickly moved further back towards the pillar he had been standing close to, so that she won't see him.
The little boy ran further and she followed him. She finally caught up with him and lifted him up in her arms. The little boy gave a squeal of laughter and put his arms around her neck.
"Rehan...how many times has Mumma told you not to run like that? Especially when we are out? Naughty boy!" she said laughing. The little boy giggled as he looked at his Mother. She shook her head at him.
"Tum bilkul apne Papa par nahin gaya ho. Janthe ho...woh kitene achai teh? Tum jaise badmash nahin teh!" she said with a smile. But there was melancholy in her voice, and Aahil could hear it. The little boy looked at her, as if alerted to her sadness. "But you know the best thing about you baby? You look just like him!" she said, as she gave the little boy's cheek a kiss.
"Mumma...sad?" asked the little boy, touching his Mother's face.
"Yes baby...sometimes Mumma gets sad. But I have you to make me happy! The best gift your Pappa gave me!" she said with a smile. "Now do you want ice-cream?" she asked with a smile.
"Yeah!" said the little boy, his eyes lighting up.
"Ok...one ice-cream coming up!" she said, as she put the little boy down. He put his little hand in his Mother's as they walked away towards the center of the Mall were an ice cream shop was located.
Aahil stared at the sight in front of him. His heart was beating fast and he felt a sweat break out on his brow. Sanam had a child? A little boy called Rehan. Obviously named after his Father. His face, his eyes all looked exactly like him. One look at him, and Aahil had known whose child he was. He closed his eyes as he felt a lump in his throat. That little boy was Rehan's son! The boy he had grown up with and loved as a brother. His constant companion throughout the years. His confidant. His friend. The boy who had grown up to be a man that everyone who knew him had loved. The man who had taken a bullet in his chest for him.
Aahil felt tears burn his eyes. "Tumne muje ithana bada dokha kaise diya Rehan?" he said, balling his fists, as he struggled to draw breath. "Lekin yeh zindagi bhi tere ehsaan hain muj par...toh main tumse kaise shikayath karu?" whispered Aahil, his eyes moving upward, as a tear fell down his cheek.
"Kyon Rehan...kyon? Kyon kiya aisa?" he asked. He was in so much pain that he could not even move. He leaned against the pillar that he was standing next to. His hand covered his eyes. He had wondered all those months after she left, why she left without even saying Goodbye? He had thought maybe everything that had happened had been too much for her, and she had decided to let it go. Let HIM go.
He wondered...is this why she had left? Because she knew she was pregnant with Rehan's child? He drew a deep breath. He suddenly remembered how she had cried at Rehan's funeral. How she had begged for a final glimpse of him. At the time he had been too numbed in his own grief to realise that her actions were more of a lover's than of a friend's.
He couldn't even call her "Bewafa" because in the end, he had chosen someone else over her. He had bowed down to the wishes of his Mother and accepted Nayi Sanam as his wife, and given her the status of Choti Begum. He declared that Sanam was now a servant, and not his wife anymore. But even still she had stayed. He had thought she stayed for him, but maybe she had not? She had tried her level best to show him the truth about what happened to his Father. Freed him from the prison of his guilt. But then Rehan had been killed and everything had fallen apart. Ammi had gone crazy with grief and started to act strange.
Two days after Rehan's death Sanam had just disappeared and he didn't know why or where. Ammi had told him that she had finally got tired of trying to separate him from his new wife and given up. He didn't want to believe it. But her sudden disappearance had made him wonder if she was right. He had even made inquiries about her. Even sent someone to Punjab. But they had come back and said that her Badi Ammi had been living in Punjab alone for some months, and then gone off on a Pilgrimage. She was not in Punjab and neither was Sanam. He had been shocked to know that Badi Ammi was not in Shimla as he had assumed. When had she been discharged and why had she not come to Bhopal, where her granddaughters were? He had not been able to find answers to any of it.
Then things had really unraveled one day. Around a week after Rehan's death, he had gone to Ammi's room to speak to her. She still had her hair out and refused to tie it up. Aahil had told her that she should tie her hair and come out of her room. It was not good for her to just sit here on her own like this the whole day. Ammi had gone into a fit of rage. She had said HE was the reason that she lost Rehan. Aahil had thought that it was grief making her act this way, so he had not reacted to her words. She then started to break things in her room and scream, and then she had lifted a knife from her fruit basket and had come at him. She had screamed that if she still had a gun, she would shoot him like she shot his Father and how she had been forced to shoot Rehan.
"Tumhari wajan se hum ne apna beta koya hain. Tumhari wajan se. Tume zinda reheneka koi haq nahin. Hum tumain jaan se maar dungi. Samja tum?" she had screamed at him.
Aahil had been so shocked he had not known how to react. Ammi had been coming at him again with the knife when suddenly a shot had been fired behind her, and Ammi had fallen to the ground in front of him. Aahil had looked up to see his new wife holding a gun. His eyes had grown wide as he realized what she had done.
Aahil jumped forward and picked Tanveer up, and placed her on the bed. He had yelled "Khala...Khalu", as Nayi Sanam had just stood there looking at the scene with no emotion on her face.
"Ammi...Ammi" Aahil had yelled. But Tanveer had not stirred.
"Woh Marchuki hain Aahil ji. Aab apke bhulane sain woh nahin uthegi!" said nayi Sanam in an emotionless tone.
"Are you insane? You shot Ammi? Pagal ho gayi ho tum?" Aahil had screamed at her.
"Chillaiye Maat Aahil ji. Main ne aapki jaan bachayi hain. Ek achi biwi hone ka farz nibhaya hain maine! Mohobaat ka farz nibhaya!" she said with a smile.
"Tum sach main pagal ho!" said Aahil, as Khala and Khalu had walked in to take in the scene in front of them. Khala had screamed as she had seen blood flowing from Tanveer's back where she lay, making the bed sheets red.
"Yeh Mui Kambakat ne kya kar diya?" she had yelled. Lateef who had walked in behind them and seen the scene, had frozen in fear. But he had realised that something needed to be done, and called the Police. The rest was a blur in Aahil's mind, as he remembered an ambulance coming and police coming. The ambulance staff had pronounced Tanveer dead. The police had arrested Nayi Sanam.
In the days that followed things had come to light which had shocked Aahil. The Police had told him that the gun used to shoot his Mother had been the same one used to shoot Rehan and Suleiman Chacha, whose body had been found in the Temple, after they had left following Rehan being shot. Khala and Khalu had been questioned and threatened with long jail terms, and in fear, they had admitted that Nayi Sanam had killed Suleiman and that Tanveer had shot Rehan by accident while trying to shoot Aahil.
They had also testified to the fact that Nayi Sanam had thrown away the gun used for the murders of Rehan and Suleiman. However some days later she had been approached by Faiz Ansari, Haya's ex husband, who had possession of the gun. He had tried to blackmail her. She had shot him too. His body had been found dumped in the outskirts of Bhopal. Khala and Khalu had admitted they had got his body dumped after Tanveer told them that Nayi Sanam had shot Faiz. They had also declared in their statement that the Late Tanveer Begum had admitted to them that she killed Nawab Raza Ibrahim, and also prominent architect Asad Ahemed Khan, his wife, sister and father in law. In exchange for their cooperation, Khala and Khalu AKA Gazala and Razak Khan had been given reduced sentences. However they were both going to serve 10 years each for being an accessory to murder and attempting to pervert the cause of justice.
Aahil had found out that Haya had had a lot of problems with Faiz and how he had harassed her. The police had told him the whole story. Finally Haya had managed to escape him and reunited with Rahat. But then,Faiz had tried to kill him, but he had managed to escape and had been found injured but alive. Haya had been informed of Rahat being alive two days after Rehan's death, and Rahat had been moved to a Military hospital. Haya had gone with him. He was told that no civilians were allowed to visit without the permission of the next of kin. After hearing about the things Haya had been through, Aahil had known it would be too selfish of him to approach her now to find out where Sanam might be. So he had decided to let it be for the time being.
After everything he had found out, Aahil had lived in shock for days. He had found it hard to believe that the women he had worshiped had played him all these years. All she had wanted was his money. To make sure he stayed beholden to her forever, she had played this game with him. Made him believe he shot his Father and that she took the blame for his crime. He had left Ibrahim Mansion and Bhopal and moved to Mumbai. Only Lateef came with him, and he had rented a house just outside the city. He had just wanted to get away from everything. They had an office here in Mumbai and he had taken over running it, and sent someone else to wrap things up in the Bhopal office and shut it down. He had never wanted to go back there again.
3 years had gone by and he had not seen or heard from her. For the first year after the death of Rehan and Tanveer, he had been too numb to even do anything much other than just work and sleep. He hardly went out, and he had no real social life, or friends. He didn't see anyone. Even in the past 2 years since, he sometimes went to the States to see his sisters. But that was it. He was pretty much a recluse now. He had given up on ever having a normal life.
Around 6 months after moving to Mumbai, he had made one inquiry with the Military camp he had known Rahat had been based at initially. He had been told that Major Rahat Ansari had resigned from the military and moved to London where his wife's family resided. Aahil had been shocked to hear this, as he had not known that Sanam had family in London. Then he thought that maybe it was Haya's father's side of the family. But since then, he had had no way of contacting Haya. So he'd had to accept that his only way of finding out about Sanam had been closed off as well.
Today he had only just come to the Mall to buy a gift for Lateef. It was his birthday tomorrow and he could not just ignore it. Lateef had been so steadfast and always supported him through these years and that was the least he could do. He had forgotten to celebrate his own birthday the past 2 years. It was Lateef who had brought a cake for his birthday last year and wished him. If not he would probably have forgotten the date. No one in the Mumbai office knew much about him. So they had not even known it was his birthday.
When he had seen the cake, it had reminded him of Sanam. Of how she had brought him a cake for his 30th Birthday, when his whole family had forgotten it. He winced when he remembered how he had asked her if she got him the cake out of some "Purpose?". How blind he had been then to the women she was. His Mother had poisoned his mind to such an extent that he had believed that Sanam had married him for money. How wrong he had been about her.
She had tried to free him from the clutches of Tanveer and he had not even realized at what personal cost to her. She had killed her parents too, and Sanam had put up with Tanveer just for him. Maybe that is why in the end she had gone to Rehan? When she could not stand his defection anymore. "I drove you away Sanam. I have no one else but myself to blame!" he whispered to himself. It hurt like hell to even think of Sanam as the Mother of Rehan's child. But there was nothing he could do about it now. How was he even going to approach her now? What was he to say to her. "Sorry" seemed like such a lame and inadequate word to describe how he felt.
To be continued...
