Part 2

*"Tu Ne Dhi Bekarari...Ae Mere Sanam...Tumse Hi Payenge...Karaar Iss Dil Ka Hum

Tu Ne Dhi Bekarari...Ae Mere Sanam!"

Aahil continued to watch Mother and son as they bought their ice cream, and moved towards the main entrance of the mall. They started to disappear from his line of vision and Aahil suddenly felt galvanized into action. He started to walk towards them with quick strides, and soon he saw them walking to the car park. He slowed his steps down a bit, so as not to be noticed. He then walked further towards the car park and saw them get into the first cab parked off the cab stand in the far right. Aahil saw her cab start to move forward and he panicked. He had no time to go to his car which was parked on the other side of the parking lot. In Mumbai traffic she would disappear in no time. He had lived without her for 3 years. There was no way he was going to let her walk away again without a trace. Aahil quickly ran towards the cab stand as her cab moved away, and got into the next cab off the rink. He told the cab driver.

"Please follow the cab that just left here!" as he sat in the back seat. Aahil saw the driver give him a speculative look, but he started the car and slowly started following the other cab.

Soon they were moving in traffic and after driving for about 15 minutes, her cab turned towards an apartment complex. Aahil knew that this complex had apartments that people lived in, as well as one's they rented for mostly overseas visitors. It was quite an exclusive area and an expensive building with facilities such a swimming pool and onsite gym. When he used to come to Mumbai for work before, their company had owned a similar apartment where either he or Rehan or any executive that came would stay. In fact the company still owned that apartment, but these days it was mostly rented out. Sanam must have a sound financial status to be able to afford to stay here. Sanam had obviously made it on her own, without any help from him. Not only was she looking after herself, but looking after Rehan's son too!

He saw the cab she was in stop at the entrance way of the building, and soon she got out with her son. She started to move towards the flight of steps leading to the foyer of the building. Aahil quickly paid the driver as he saw Sanam and little Rehan move through the glass sliding doors of the entrance to the building. He quickly followed them into the foyer and saw them going to the reception. Sanam stopped there and was quietly talking to the lady working behind the counter. Aahil saw the desk clerk look at her computer and say something to Sanam. Sanam smiled at her and it looked like she was thanking her. Aahil watched her from afar and he was quite certain she would be moving to the lift soon, as in these buildings the ground floor usually housed the gym, sauna and swimming pool areas, and the apartments were usually upstairs. He saw some people waiting in front of the double lifts and quickly went and stood in the corner of the group, so as not to be seen by Sanam who he saw approaching the lifts with little Rehan in tow. Just then the ping of the lift could be heard and the doors opened. Aahil quickly went in with the group of people and stood in a far corner of the lift. Fortunately there was a man in front of him blocking him from view. He then saw Sanam get into the lift with little Rehan.

They were the last to get in, and Aahil saw her choose "10" on the dial, and then the lift started moving up. Fortunately there was only one stop between ground and 10, someone who got out at floor 6. Everyone else seemed to be going further up. As the lift stopped on floor 10, Sanam and Rehan got out, and Aahil quickly moved past the crowd in front and got out of the lift as well. He looked to his left and saw no one, and then to his right and saw Sanam moving down the corridor. He lingered close to the lift area so as not to be seen by her. He then saw her stop at a door and open up her bag. He saw her take a card out, and within minutes she and the little boy disappeared from sight. Aahil took a deep breath. This was it. He had to go and knock on that door now. There was no other alternative.

He moved down the corridor and hoped that he would be able to remember exactly what door she had stopped at. He walked past around 3 doors and then stopped at the next one. "S Ahemed Khan" it said. He looked at the name plate as the irony of it hit him. No second guessing was needed. Her name was on the door to be clearly seen. He looked at her maiden name which adorned the door, and sighed. It seemed she wanted nothing of his. Not even his name anymore. He wondered as to what reaction he will receive from Sanam when she finally saw him. 3 long years, and they had been living in the same city, and he had not even known. Maybe she had not been here the whole time? Is it possible that she had been living somewhere else and recently moved here? He found it hard to believe that he had been in the same city as her all this time and not know she was here. How could he not have sensed that she was so close?

He knew she was now Rehan's son's Mother. But she was still the women he loved. The only women he had ever loved. His Miss Dhabewali. That girl he had met in Punjab nearly 4 years ago. Nothing had been able to extinguish that love. Not even prejudice, misunderstandings, or even 3 years of separation. Nothing. These three years should have taught him that nothing could make him stop loving her. Their fates were forever intertwined. No matter what he did, he could never escape. Now she was someone else's child's Mother. But he realized that his love for her did not diminish one itoa at the thought. Yes it hurt him, but he was still a slave to this love. "Muje tum har haal main Qubool Hai Sanam! Just give me one more chance, and I will prove to you that letting me into your life again is not a mistake!"

He took another deep breath as he pressed the buzzer on the door. "Here goes!" he told himself as he waited.

Inside the apartment Seher heard the buzzer go off on her door. She frowned. Who could be at her door at this time? It was 4pm in the evening. She hardly ever saw people at the apartment as it was. "Maybe it's housekeeping?" She thought. But they usually came during the day. She frowned again. Then she heard the buzzer go off again, and decided that whoever was there was obviously not going away. So she might as well open the door. After all, what does an ex con girl have to worry so much about? Seher shook her head and smiled at herself. She used to hold people up and steal their money. So whoever this was at the door, she still had enough moves in her to bring them down if needed.

She suddenly remembered a vivid memory of a seemingly reserved guy who she thought SHE had to save from goons, until he had started to beat them up black and blue. All she'd been able to do was stare in awe. "Was this the same guy?" she had thought. "Prem from Maine Pyaar Kiya, turned into Pandey from Dhabaang?" is what she had told herself. She had underestimated Rehan. But soon she realized what he was made of. Not a day went by when she didn't think of him. It was kind of hard not to, when his son was in front of her eyes all day and night. But even without his son, he would still have been unforgettable. "You were one of a kind. The unforgettable kind! You ruined me for any other man Rehan!" said Seher ruefully looking up.

She walked to the door, and looked through the small peephole on the door. Strange, there was no one there. But the buzzer had gone off just seconds ago. She thought she might as well check, just in case it is housekeeping. Maybe she and Rehan can go to the pool if they needed to clean the apartment. One of the things she liked about this complex was that it was a full service one, so the cleaning service came once a day. She liked everything clean, just like her sister. Badi Ammi told her that it was something they get from their Father. Certainly not from their Mum who had been as messy as ever, which had driven Abbu crazy. She opened the door, and looked out, and there was no one in the doorway, she was about to close the door, when suddenly a man appeared in front of it. Seher's eyes flew up in shock as she saw who it was.

"Aa...Aahil...Aap?" she said. Her shock clearly reflected in her voice and eyes.

"Hello Sanam!" said Aahil in a quiet tone.

"What...what are you doing here?" she asked him, visibly paling. Aahil closed his eyes at her reaction. She was clearly not happy to see him.

'"Can I please come in Sanam?" he asked, looking at her.

"Mumma...?" said a little voice from behind Sanam, as Aahil looked at the little boy Rehan who appeared in the hallway. Seher swallowed as she heard Rehan. She quickly turned towards her son.

"Baby...please go to your room and play with your new dinosaur. I'll be there soon!" she said quickly, so that he will go inside.

"It's OK Sanam. I know about him. There is no need for you to hide him from me!" said Aahil quietly. "I saw the two of you at the Gama Mall. I followed you here!" he said, as Seher looked at Aahil in shock.

"Please come in!" she said to him as she stepped away from the door for him to enter, and closed the door behind him. Seher walked into the sitting area and Aahil followed. She indicated the sofa to him and said "Please have a seat. Would you like a drink?" she asked politely.

"No thanks!" said Aahil as he turned towards the little boy who was still lingering in the hall, looking at him curiously. Aahil gave him a small smile.

"Hi. I'm Aahil! What's your name?" he asked. Even though he knew his name, he couldn't think of anything else to say to the little boy to get him to talk.

"Rehan!" he said in his little baby voice. Aahil felt a lump in his throat as he looked at little Rehan. He looked so much like him, the resemblance was uncanny. It was almost too painful to look at him. He suddenly remembered a moment with Rehan after he found out he was Ammi's son. Well, Tanveer Begum's son. Aahil had given him a Thabeez and told him that he had always known they were connected, but now he just knew how.

"Jo jasbaath mere dil main apke liye hain...isko kisi naam ki zaroorat nahin hain!" Rehan had said. He had held Rehan's hands and told him "Hum hamesha saath rahenge Rehan!"

Aahil closed his eyes as the bittersweet memory assailed him. "I am sorry Rehan. Main apna wada pura nahin kar saka. But I swear to you, main tumhare bete ke saath hamesha rahunga. And this promise I WILL keep!" he said to himself.

"It's a wonderful name. I knew another Rehan just like you. Your Daddy. He was an amazing guy!"

"You knew Pappa?" asked the little boy.

"Yes Beta...I knew your Papa!" he said softly, as tears stung his eyes. Seher watched this interaction and tears started to form in her own eyes. This was the closest thing to a relative from his Father's side that her son had. Yes Haya was his aunt, from Rehan's side as well as from hers. (They had found out after Rehan's death that Rehan's Father Imraan Qureshi and Haya's Father Imraan Qureshi was one and the same. Badi Ammi had told them after finding out Rehan had been Tanveer's son). But Aahil had been Rehan's brother. They grew up together. So in a sense, this was Rehan's closest relative, and therefore her son's only real link to his Father.

"Rehan?" he said to the little boy as he looked at him in awe. "Can I please have a hug?" he asked. Little Rehan looked at his Mother, as if to seek permission, and Seher nodded her assent. Aahil then moved close to the little boy and crouched down in front of him. He extended his arms to him and little Rehan took a tentative step towards him and into his arms. As Aahil's arms went around the little boy, he felt overcome with emotion.

"Rehan!" he said softly, but both he and Seher knew he was not talking to this Rehan. Tears fell down from Seher's eyes, and Aahil's eyes were equally full of tears as he hugged the little boy.

He moved the little boy away from him and looked at him. "I didn't just know your Pappa Beta. He was my brother. We grew up together. We were very close. So I am your uncle. Your uncle Aahil. Remember, if you ever need anything, your uncle Aahil will always be there for you!" he said, as he held the little boys shoulders. Little Rehan looked at him solemnly. "Now go and play with your new Dinosaur, like Mummy told you to!" he said with a little smile.

"OK!" said little Rehan as he turned on his heel and ran off to his room. "The resilience of kids", thought Aahil. They can move on to the next thing so easily. If only it was that easy for adults. Sometimes we were stuck in the same place for years, unable to move. He sighed.

"He is a wonderful little boy! You did a great job with him Sanam!" said Aahil, looking at her.

"Thank you Aahil!" said Seher, as she winced inwardly at what he had called her "Sanam!". Seher sighed. It was time Aahil knew the truth. Because it was clear that he held no grudge against her sister even knowing she had a child with Rehan. (which is what he thought). It was not easy for a man to accept that the women he loved was the Mother of someone else's child. Especially when that woman was HIS wife. But it seemed Aahil had made peace with that. Whatever Sanam had thought at the time, Aahil clearly loved her from the very depth of his soul. If not, he would not have decided to turn a blind eye to what anyone would think of as a betrayal from both his wife and his brother.

"Sanam!" Aahil said quietly looking at Seher. "I know what you must be thinking. WHY am I not acting like a wronged husband and questioning you? Well the truth is, I wronged you first. I know it all started with you running from our wedding. But the fact remains, I should have listened to you when you came back. But I didn't. I listened to Ammi's lies, and decided to reject you. I gave that murderous witch your place in my home. So I understand if that is why you turned to Rehan in the end. He really loved you. Probably more than I did at the time. So even though it hurts like hell...I am willing to let it go, if you'll give me another chance!" said Aahil, his eyes sincere, his tone grave.

She just continued to stare at him, saying nothing, as if she was in shock. "If your worried about little Rehan...then please don't. I will treat him as my own son, and I will be there for him in every way I can be. I was never able to fulfill my promise to Rehan that we will always be together, but I will at least try to make it up to him by being there for his son. Please don't rob me of this chance to make amends Sanam!"

"Is it a misplaced sense of guilt that is making you say all this Aahil, or do you still have real feelings for my...for me?" asked Seher. She just needed to hear Aahil say that he loved Sanam before telling him the truth. This was her sister's life. Her second chance at happiness and she wanted to make sure she was doing right by her. She had already messed up badly once. She won't do that ever again. Her sister had a good life now. A successful life. Even a happy one. But she knew Sanam was lonely. She had never been able to give her heart to anyone else. She knew that somewhere deep inside, it still belonged to Aahil.

Aahil gave an ironic smile. "These feelings are as real as they get! Three years in the making. Even all this time apart, I have not been able to forget you. There has been no one else since you. Na tumse pehele mera koi pyaar tha...na tumhare baad. It was always you Sanam. Always you!"

Seher closed her eyes as she sighed and opened them again and gave Aahil a small smile. "Wait here for a minute!" she said as she walked away towards her bedroom. Aahil frowned as he watched her disappear to the other side of the apartment. Then almost as soon as she left, she came back. In her hand was a silver square shaped photo frame. She looked at it and sighed. She remembered when it had been taken. During those weeks she had hidden in her parents room in their old house. How she and Sanam had exchanged places a few times a day. How naive they had been, and Rehan too, to think they could trump a women like Tanveer that easily. She shook her head a little at the memories. She looked at Aahil square in the eyes as she handed the photo frame to him, face down.

Aahil frowned as he took it from her slowly. "What is this?" he asked without looking at it.

"Look at it, and it will all be clear to you!" she said softly.

Aahil turned the photo frame around, not knowing what to expect. However, what he saw made his eyes widen in pure shock. In the picture was Rehan, and on either side of him were two girls. Two identical girls. Well actually two Sanam's. One girl was wearing traditional attire and the other girl western attire, and Rehan was between them smiling and they were both smiling as well. It looked like a selfie. He continued to stare at the photo, his breath coming faster. He then looked up at Seher questioningly.

"Hi. I am Seher. Your sister in law!" she said quietly.

To be continued.
