In my opinion an actor, or actors alone cannot make or break a show! A show's success to me is based on STRONG story, good writing, good script, and also the acting and directing. A good director is a MUST as is a strong script, and clear vision and execution. I know in daily soaps they lack the latter.

THAT is why I say that India should gear towards either having "Finite" shows, like for 1 year etc, OR do seasons like most western countries do. A season lasts for 6 months, and then off for 6 months and then comes back! I guess Indian TV makers are afraid if they did that, the viewers will turn off and not be interested in Season 2, but this is a fallacy! As it has been proven by shows in many countries that ran for sometimes 10 years under this system! I am talking Prime Time shows, not "Daytime" soaps! (Which is the time most western countries telecast their soaps, and those shows are useless to the max, and have no real story, bad acting and is a Vamp fest!).

India really needs to move away from this endless dragging system and do finite shows or Seasons. That way TRP will remain consistent due to good story, script, acting and execution. Everyone will stay fresh and the product will be FAR superior!

So, in conclusion what I have to say is NO. Star power may DRAW people into a show. (Like right now, I am watching a Life OK show for the first time, due to me being a fan of the male lead, who was once featured in a popular SP show). He has not even ENTERED the show yet, but I am loving the show, coz it has a very interesting story, suspense, drama, good acting and high production values! So star power can get people IN the door, but cant KEEP them, if the rest is not falling in line. If the product itself is of low quality, or the story is not making sense, then no "Star" can save the show!

Actors are as good as the material they are given to work with! YES, a "Good" actor can make more of even the lamest scenes or scripts, and that is their talent. But that alone cannot increase TRP, coz people want to be entertained. Just looking at the face of a "Star" is not enough to entertain you! YES, we watch sometimes coz we love the actor, but we watch while complaining and the truth is we want to quit, and sometimes we even do!

I am a Non Indian and overseas viewer, so I don't contribute to TRP. But I think even TRP audience probably wants higher quality content, and don't just tune in to see a "Star!"

Wow, Saturday evening debate

Not much deep rather shallow views coz I m not too much into the show

But since I like crashing into your Posts ...

For me it was never the star coz I don't watch hindi serials don't have satellite dish so a purely internet international viewer 😳

Came across KSG and Surbhi on YouTube, the one she knocks right into him when Ayaan was hiding in room, and just the chemistry the story got me hooked. But the constant dragging the failed nikahs soured it big time

KVB for me was not acceptable in the beginning but his acting was won over me and I was a regular until the 2 nd nikah of Ahil

So if you got good story, good actors, I will get the popcorn

great post Yaari 👍🏼

well, the answer of u'r ques is a big fat NO...

if star power worked, then QH would have ended by Dec,2013...

if people would have watched shows for celebs, shows like Madhubala,Rangrasiya wouldn't have been shut down due to lack of trps...whereas shows like Udaan which doesn't have a proper lead is doing so well in trp chart...

i myself watch this show for an actor but a FACT is a FACT...trp audience doesn't know who SJ,KSG,RV,KVB are...the only factor that can keep them glued is a gripping STORYLINE (though i myself don't find the story gripping anymore, but may be some other does 😛)

and may be i am sounding too harsh, but if the show could run without KSG,it will run without SJ or KVB...yes,i am saying this despite being a die-hard SJ fan...

No an actress or actor cant bring trp alone but sometimes a character gets more popular than a show itself...for example there are some shows which have brilliant story line but not great characters and there are some shows in which characters are brilliant but story not appreciable. And trps are most of time good in 2nd type.. And if both characters and show is mast toh baat hi kuch aur but esa bohot kam hota he. And characters are played by actors if a particular character becomes popular the credit is given to the actor most of time or specially but as a whole ofcourse its team work. And in woman oriented shows some time a male lead character overpowers the female lead.
So in short characters play the important role not any particular actress or track...and if characters are awsome so obviously people will look forward to story. If characters are not awsome and story awsome then no it doesn't work

An interesting topic. Hopefully it will remain a healthy debate and not turn into a fan-war.😆

And answer your question. No Actors and actresses do not deserve credit for TRP alone. The story, the track and the characters do.The technicians do. The writers can make or break a character as well as the story. Mandy has written everything that I intended to say so I'd rather not repeat the same thing. But the writers are the king here. They can easily make you love or hate a character. An actor just follows the instructions by the writers and the director. Very very few people watch a show for the actor. Most of the TRP audience watch for the characters and the story. Even a newbie actor's show can gain high TRP's if the story is gripping enough.

So in short. Actors do not make or break a show. They do not gain it TRP's. The story and tracks do. And I agree with Mandy that India needs to shift to Finite shows. That way actors and actresses can actually play with different roles to hone their talent and not remain stagnant with one role for years on end. SJ has been quite lucky to have gotten to play 3 very different roles in the same show.

In my opinion . if particularly asking about this serial. We r here not talking about the success of the show as a whole. In daily serials the success is seen as measured by trps. Some shows show successively good trps n continue with it, some serials show a stable trp ( on a lower or high level) n there r some where trps continously change. In our serials fr the padt few months thats the case, sometimes its good, sometimes stable ( v less often) n sometimes decreasing ... So in that case an actor, a track, a sequence should be blamed.
I agree with mandy that in totality only story is the king, if the story is well executed , it shows.

But lets guve u an example, if a particular actor/actress goes missing fr a while, those who have been continously watching connects with the actor, so they'll definitely miss that actor, n when his/her comeback is promoted or anticipated its definitely going to attract audiences and gain trp for that particular week or two. I will give the example of Seher's entry, ppl were arguing but there was an anticipation to see her entry that showed in the trp boost. So Regarding ur topican actor/actress can give a trp boost fir a week or two, but the trps will sustain or not that depends on the STORY. Success in totality should be credited to the whole team but just like some tracks boost the trps , the actors/actresses also boost it.

I will give an example of Kis desh mei hai mera dil, prem was shown as dead, the trps kept going low. N then going by ekta's style prem came back from dead, n that was promoted too. So his comeback boosted the trps definitely.

Concluding my points, an actor actress can give a trp boost but thats momentary if the track is not worth watching the actor/actress cant do anything alone

Good attempt. Thanks for the PM.

The captain of a ship is the guy who gets maximum prominence. Similarly, in a movie, the director is the captain but people see only what is INFRONT of their eyes and not what is behind the curtains. So, we see the actors and credit them for success or sue them for failure.

In a TV show, especially, Indian shows, many a time, more than the director or script writer, the producer takes prominence. There is no set story line to adhere to. Many a time, the story is changed on a daily basis on the set itself. This is because of the presence or absence of some actors, the TRP ratings etc.

For e.g. When KVB was sick, QH showed a lot of crap with the actors they had, and I frankly lost interest. I didn't start watching until he came back.

Do you think the story PRIOR to KVB calling in sick would have been to show Sanam dressed as a ghost and all the grave scenes? It may have been different but they had to change whatever they have in mind to accommodate his absence.

So, clearly, from the above instance, it's obvious that no actor is indispensable. They didn't stop showing QH just because KVB wasn't in there, did they? I am not sure about TRPs but I think lately, QH has been doing mediocrely well... Average performance, I'd say? If the figures say otherwise, my apologies.

I used to love QH with Asad and Zoya especially the actors. Does it mean the show ran really well and it topped the charts? Not really... There were ups and downs.

A serial is a cumulative effort by many. Everybody plays a vital part - the spot boys, cameramen, crew, the actors, makeup artists, directors and others.

Not one factor affects TRPs completely. But, yes, having a good cast acts as a catalyst definitely.

For instance, I love KSG. If I know, a new show has him in the cast; I will end up watching the first few episodes just to know what it is about. If it had someone, I did not know, initially, I wouldn't be interested. But later, if the story is good, and the actors act well, I may start watching it.

I don't have proofs but there are so many shows which don't have brilliant, popular actors. They still run, don't they?

How can you give credits only to the actors for the TRPs? Everyone gets credit. The entire cast does. A show ended recently after a few months of starting. It ended because they felt the story line ends there and it would drag later. It didn't have actors that I am crazy about. Still, I ended up watching it because the story was amazing and the actors did a brilliant job.

Who said the actors get the credit of success alone? They don't. Any article mentions every factor that worked for the show.

A thoughtful post Yaari. And I am glad the discussion has been healthy till now.
For me a show is a team effort. Its like a company which is having profits and losses and is sharing both between them. Only the actors of the leads CANNOT be the sole purpose of gains or losses. Its just lame to even think like that its doing great because of that or that..The same team is for when there are losses, the same team is there when there are gains. Simple as that.

Yes stars do draw some attention and publicity, but till when exactly? If the characters and the story lacks in creativity, there is no need nor there is any interest. Drama is the main quotient of our shows and they do work. Second is romance, that too works.

Story equals to TRPs.

I too agree with Mandy. India like SERIOUSLY needs to end the shows when dragging starts and instead come up with seasons with a fresh new look. It would be like the BEST decision.

I also think the genres of the shows should also be changed from drama and romance to some thrill and crime and even "good" comedy. However I don't think they would last long when Indian audience is concerned. Sigh!

So I have to stick with "The Practice" and Men At Work" only. 😆

nice post...yaari😊
popular and renowned actor can give a good start to a show...but then after sometime even his or her fans will not even watch it if story is not good...
mostly people in forum are online audience...who mostly watch show for their favourite couple or actor...but trp audience watch show for a good story line and bit of drama...
so for trp ...good storyline and consistency is required ...😊
