CHAPTER 10:
As Zoya stood staring at a sleeping Asad with a look of apprehension on her face, Maria stood watching the changing emotions on the young woman's face and wondered who the man downstairs could be. She had not liked the way he came and demanded to see Zoya immediately and she did not like his demeanor and now seeing the emotions on Zoya's face she knew that something was wrong and that Zoya knew who this man would be and wasn't keen on meeting this man.
"Zoya what should I do? I knew that you and Asad were having some much needed time alone and I really did not want to disturb you... and I told this man that you both are having a siesta and I was told not to disturb you both and that I dared not do so... but he insisted that he cannot delay in meeting you and told me to call you even if you are asleep...and I don't think he will leave so easily."
"It's alright Maria... I know that whoever had come will not go without meeting me... I will come down but ask him to wait for about fifteen minutes." Zoya said dejectedly.
Once Maria left, Zoya went to the bathroom to quickly freshen up and change her clothes.
And when she came down and entered the drawing room, she saw Ayaan standing at the far end of the room near the windows staring outside, and seeing him Zoya felt a little relieved thinking that it would be more easy for her to deal with Ayaan than her Abbu and his anger.
"Ayaan." Zoya called out to him softly and he turned around to face her.
"What took you so long Zoya... I have been waiting since half an hour." Zoya did not like the tone Ayaan used.
"Ayaan I was... I was sleeping... so I had to freshen up first... didn't Maria tell you that? I didn't know that you were coming... you could have at least messaged me that you would be coming... then I would have been ready to meet you."
"Yea your maid told me that you and your husband are having a siesta... How relaxed you both must be to have siestas in the afternoon... but unfortunately I'm not so relaxed Zoya... so I had to come and meet you without informing you about it... I'm sorry if I disturbed your precious siesta"
"Ayaan, why this sarcasm?... I can't believe it's you who is talking in this manner... please tell me why you came and why you insisted on seeing me right away?" Zoya said warily.
But before Ayaan could answer they heard someone entering the drawing the room.
"Zoe?" they heard Asad's soft voice and turned towards him. And Zoya was suddenly gripped by fear. She hadn't told Asad about Ayaan and she did not want him to find out about Ayaan this way. She knew that he would be hurt if he found out about it this way before she could tell him about it herself. And leaving Ayaan standing near the windows, she immediately went towards Asad.
"Asad what happened? You woke up?" Zoya tried to sound calm even though her heart was racing.
"Yea I woke up... I fell asleep holding you in my arms but when I woke up you weren't there and I couldn't go back to sleep." Asad said and held out his hand towards Zoya. Zoya reached out and held his hand and the moment she did Asad pulled her towards him and hugged her with one arm around her waist and Zoya had no other option except to return his hug.
"What are you doing here?... I missed you... come back to bed Sweetheart." Asad bent down slightly and nuzzled her neck.
"You missed me so quickly?... I just came down." Zoya whispered slightly breathless
"Yea I missed you the moment I woke up." Saying it Asad lifted his head and captured her lips in a tender kiss and the moment his lips touched hers Zoya could not help in responding despite knowing that Ayaan was standing there and watching them.
"Come let's go back to the room." Asad said softly when they broke apart.
"Umm Asad... actually I came down because someone came to meet me... Ayaan... do you remember I told you about him?." Zoya said vaguely. Asad could not immediately remember who Ayaan was but then he remembered her telling him about Ayaan while they were in France. She had told him about her friendship with Ayaan and how her father wanted her to marry him and how she could never see him as more than a friend.
"He... actually he wanted to discuss something with me... so I will talk to him and will come back soon." Zoya looked at Asad hoping he would not ask any questions right then.
"Oh alright... but is he here? Why don't you introduce me to him?" Asad said suddenly feeling a little awkward realizing that he was demonstrating too much intimacy towards Zoya while someone else was there seeing it.
"Umm Ayaan... meet my husband Asad." Zoya turned towards Ayaan and said a little nervously wondering if Ayaan would dare to reveal anything in front of Asad or not; but at the same time she entwined her fingers with Asad's and held his hand as in defiance indicating she would always stand with Asad no matter what.
"Hi... nice to meet you." Asad extended his free right hand towards Ayaan. Ayaan stared at them in anger. When he came to their house he was prepared to see Asad and face him if necessary but right now seeing him there and then seeing him and Zoya behaving so intimately with each other in front him, he wished he had not come there. He could not bear to see them together and it hurt him to see how close and comfortable they were with each other and suddenly his hurt turned in to immense anger towards the man who had stolen Zoya from him. He did not want to shake his hand and get introduced to him but seeing the unwavering way Zoya stood beside Asad and stared back at Ayaan with defiance, Ayaan had no choice but extend his hand out and shake Asad's hand.
"Hi I'm Ayaan... so finally I meet the man who stole Zoya's heart." Ayaan's voice was still a little sarcastic and Zoya did not miss his tone and wondered if Asad noticed it as well.
"Yea I guess I am that lucky man... Lucky enough to steal her heart and receive her love... and I guess I broke many hearts including yours, but I hope you won't hold that against me." Asad laughed in good humor but Zoya and Ayaan detected a slight edginess in his voice and realized that Asad had very well felt the undercurrents around and had kind of warned Ayaan in an indirect way.
"I will now leave you two alone to talk... but come back soon." Asad addressed the last part to Zoya and squeezed her hand before leaving her and walking out of the room.
"So your so called husband is not only crippled but he cannot even see isn't it?... tell me what do you see in him Zoya that you left me and came running back to him?... I wonder if he can even satisfy you in bed..." Ayaan told Zoya the moment she turned back to him and Zoya stood staring at him with shock. She could not believe that it was Ayaan who stood in front of her and was talking in this manner.
"That's disgusting Ayaan... I could never imagine you stooping so low... my husband has suffered serious injuries both physically and mentally and he is struggling to recover and instead of sympathizing you are mocking at him?... at us?" Zoya looked at him incredulously.
"May be I'm behaving disgustingly, but I don't care... and you forced me to behave this way Zoya... You refused to let me even touch you and here you are being intimate with him right in front of me... but tell me Zoya does he really still satisfy you in every way... is he still man enough for you and do you still love him so much?"
"Yes I still love him so much... and more than that I need not to tell you anything regarding my relationship with my husband...and even otherwise, what happens between a husband and wife in their bedroom is between them... the whole world need not know about that... but since you have mocked us this way let me tell you the truth Ayaan... my husband still satisfies me both emotionally and physically as well and no one else can do it the way he does... he's the most amazing man and no one can match him in anyway and I still love him so much... both you and my Abbu should come to terms with it and let me be."
"That's not possible Zoya... neither me nor your Abbu is going to let you be as easily as you say."
"What do you plan to do then Ayaan?... you can't force me to come back to you... and you know very well that our marriage cannot be valid when I was already married to Asad."
"I plan to do this Zoya... and much more... I'm not giving up so easily." Saying it Ayaan picked up a document he had kept on the table nearby and thrust it into Zoya's hands.
"Read it... since you yourself have a basic degree in Law you will easily understand it." Ayaan said sarcastically.
Zoya looked at Ayaan's face not comprehending what he meant and then she started going through the papers he had thrust in her hands. She didn't read the whole document but after going through the first page and the brief summary on last page she understood what it was and what Ayaan was planning to do. It was a Brief of a lawsuit that he was going to file against her and Asad saying that Zoya and Asad were not married and Zoya was married to Ayaan but claiming to be married to Asad and to prove their claim in court if they were actually married. Misdemeanor.
"Ayaan, how could you do this?... you are planning to take us to court?"
"Yes I am... I'm not giving up on you without a fight Zoya... as my Ammi said, blinded by my love to you I treated you too softly... and in return you just gave me nothing but heartbreak Zoya... and from now on I'm going to act like a man and fight and since there is no way you would come back to me by just asking you I have no option left but this."
"OK fine go to court if that's what you want... do you think you can prove it in the court that Asad and me are not married?... we got married in a Civil marriage ceremony in France and it is a legal marriage there... and it would be recognized by American Law."
"Do you have any proof of that Zoya?...even your Abbu feels that you both are just pretending to be married."
"Of course there is proof and we will prove it in court." Zoya said angrily.
"Fine, then prove it... till the court declares that your marriage with me is invalid and that you are actually married to Asad Ahmed khan I will fight Zoya... so I guess next time I see you it will be in court... Unless of course you leave Asad and come back to me on your own will." Ayaan smiled sarcastically once again.
And Zoya stared at him still not able to believe that he was going to drag her to court this way.
"Bye then Zoya." Saying it Ayaan walked away leaving a totally shocked Zoya behind.
Zoya stood staring at Ayaan's retreating back and then sank into the sofa clutching the papers. She sat straight, numbly staring at the papers in her hand wondering what she should do about it.
A feeling of total helplessness mixed with anger and frustration enveloped her and she wondered how people can be so cruel when they did not get their own way. Here, she and her husband were struggling to stick together the broken pieces of their life and someone she had once thought as a friend could only think of his own loss, and could not think beyond his ego and his bitterness.
Almost an hour had passed since Ayaan left, but Zoya still sat in the drawing room wondering what she should do about the court case and how she should proceed with it. And what made Zoya most apprehensive was the thought that she had to tell Asad everything sooner than she wanted. She knew that once Ayaan goes to court Asad would somehow learn about it and she knew that she had to tell Asad the truth within the next few days and she wondered if Asad was mentally ready to listen to it and accept it. It would surely shock him and disturb him a lot and she did not want this to enhance his insecurities. Zoya had with difficulty just managed to bring him out of the darkness in which he was living all these days and managed to make him regain his self-confidence and leave behind some of his insecurities. But his condition was still fragile and she was afraid of how Ayaan's truth would affect him if she told him about it right now.
And Zoya also knew that this was the time Zoya needed to be with Asad and they needed to be together without any outside things affecting their relationship in anyway. And she knew that even if Asad accepted Ayaan's truth and took it well, still the court case would put a strain on their life and their fragile relationship and Zoya was scared to face it. Tears welled in her eyes thinking of the damage it might cause to Asad and her relationship and Asad's recovery and she started hating Ayaan and her Abbu from the bottom of her heart.
After another ten minutes she got up from the sofa, wiped her tears away and went and put the papers inside the drawer. She then closed her eyes and took a deep breath to calm herself. She knew that crying and getting emotional would not anyway help her and she knew that regardless of how hard this was going to be for her she had to face it bravely and think rationally regarding what was to be done. And she had to act cool and calm in front of Asad. She still did not want to tell him anything till she could formulate a plan in her head regarding what to do and how to deal with this because she did not want to burden Asad and make him think about the court case too much when she finally told him about it. She wanted to deal with it herself without involving Asad.
Zoya walked back upstairs to their bedroom to see that Asad was sleeping once again. She realized that he must have waited for her and then fell asleep. She sat on the bed and stared at him lovingly. His face looked so relaxed in sleep and she realized that he was actually looking a lot healthier than when she first saw him a week back. And it looked like he had even gained a little weight. And once again tears formed in her eyes thinking of how the case would put a strain on him once again.
Holding back a sob Zoya slipped under the duvet and hugged Asad tightly. Asad stirred in his sleep and hugged her back but he did not wake up. Zoya lay in his embrace and tilted her face upwards and stared at Asad's face once again. She reached with her index finger and traced the contours of his face gently, a soft bittersweet smile playing on her lips. His face was the dearest thing on earth for her and she did not want to see that face clouded with worry and tension; she wanted to see his face relaxed as it was now. Her finger reached the small dent on his cheek where a dimple formed when he smiled and her smile grew wider thinking of how they both had that same feature and how they both loved to see each other's smile. And she felt sad realizing that she hardly saw his dimpled smile these days. Unlike her own dimple which appeared whenever she smiled his dimple was really prominent only when he smiled broadly or whenever he grinned mischievously while he teased her and pulled her leg. And that was a frequent thing during their early days together and she missed that grin and those days.
*******************
The next morning Zoya woke up with a relatively calm and composed mind. She had thought a lot about the case during that night and she ultimately realized that there was nothing to really worry about the case. She and Asad were legally married in France and she knew that once they submit their marriage certificate to the court they would accept it as legal. And although Zoya did not have any practical experience as a lawyer she knew that even she could prove in the court that they were married and she ultimately understood that Ayaan did not have much of an ammunition to fight with and was just trying to make things difficult for her and Asad by going to court.
But one thing still worried her a little; and that was not knowing where their marriage certificate was. She assumed that it must be with Asad but she did not know how she was going to ask Asad regarding the marriage certificate without making him suspicious and wondering why she was suddenly asking about it. And then to her luck even that problem got solved and she got an opportunity to ask him about it indirectly.
That morning after breakfast, they were both sitting together in the drawing room sofa. She was leaning against Asad and he had his arms around her. And while she was engrossed in her I pad he was simply sitting there, his head resting on the back of the sofa and his eyes closed, just relishing the feel of her in his arms and the peace that it brought to his mind.
Zoya was going through some of her old emails; there were almost 4000 unread emails in her inbox which she had not bothered to read all these days. Most of that got collected during the initial days after the accident when she did not check her mail for almost two months. And as she was not a very mail friendly person she had been too lazy to go through the collected emails all these days. But on that morning she suddenly felt like going through them, delete whatever junk was there and empty her inbox. And while doing this she found an email that Asad had mailed to her. The date clearly indicated that it was while they were in Paris after their honeymoon and she suddenly wondered what it could be and why Asad had sent an email to her while they were living together.
"Darling, look what I found." She nudged Asad with her elbow gently.
"What?" Asad whispered lazily.
"An email that you have sent me while we were in Paris... i wonder what it is." Saying it she opened the email to see that it had an attachment saying photos of us. She quickly downloaded the attachment and saw that they were photos of them together.
"Asad, these are our photos... and now I remember... I have asked you to email them to me." She smiled happily.
"Yea even I remember that day.. we were looking at the photos saved in my phone and then you told me to email them to you and I was so surprised as to why you wanted me to email them to you and you replied that you don't trust the phone and wanted the photos to remain safe always."
"Yea... and you kept pulling my leg all the while you attached all the photos and mailed it to me...but see the benefit of it... I think you lost that phone on the day of the accident isn't it?... but see our photos are safe and we got them back." Zoya said smiling and Asad smiled at her indulgently.
"I have to agree... for a change you did something wise." Asad teased her.
"Not for a change... Mr.Asad Ahmed khan, for your kind information, I'm always wise." Zoya hit him playfully and smiled. But in the next instant her smile disappeared thinking of something.
"May be I'm not so wise after all..." her voice trailed off and Asad noticed the sudden change in her.
"What is it Princess?.. what happened?" Asad asked her confused.
"Asad, if only I had bothered to check my mail after I came back from Paris, I would have then seen these photos and understood that we were together... and I would have come looking for you even though I could not remember anything... we missed so much and we were apart for so many days... and all that could have been avoided if only I had bothered to check my email...I'm so sorry Asad." And Zoya suddenly realized that even her marriage to Ayaan and all the problems that she was right now facing because of that could also have been prevented if she had checked mail and had seen those photos and a pang of guilt enveloped her.
"Now Princess, don't say sorry and don't think of the past and what could have been... it's all fate Zoe...some things are not in our hands... and the important thing is even after everything that happened we are now together again and we still love each other so much... please don't spoil your mood thinking of the past." Asad made her face him and he cupped her cheek and caressed her face lovingly and Zoya sighed.
"Only you could be so understanding, Asad." She replied tearfully.
"Now, let's not get sentimental and sad... why don't you see those photos and describe them to me... I want to relive all those days once again." Asad smiled, rested his head back on the sofa and hugged her to him once again. Zoya then described each photo to him and together they reminisced those beautiful moments and days they had spent together. Most of the photos were photos taken during their honeymoon in Switzerland but some were while they were in Paris later and at the end there were some taken on the day they got married. And one of the photos was one which Michelle had taken just after Asad put the ring on her finger, and the close up shot showed the ring clearly.
"Umm Asad, I wonder where my ring is and what happened to it... they must have removed it at the hospital but I don't think they have returned it back... I have not seen it among my things... I miss it so much now."
Asad reached for her left hand and caressed her ring finger. He had held her hand several times since she had returned back and had felt her bare fingers; but with everything that had happened in their life and so many other things on his mind, it had not struck him that her ring was missing. The ring that he had so lovingly put on her finger on their wedding day was missing and he had no idea where it could be and it looked like neither did she.
"You mean you don't have it with you?... it must be there among your things Zoe... the hospital would surely return it to you when you get discharged." Asad said with a frown.
"But I don't think I have it Asad.. I did not see it among my jewelry... even when I had no memory of it and us, even at that time if that ring was with me I would have surely noticed it and wondered how I had that ring and who had given it to me... it's not with me Asad."
"But how is that possible Zoe?... the ring would not have slipped from your finger.. it fitted you so well... so if it was not on your finger when you woke up in the hospital, then they must have removed it... but hospitals always return your things." They both lapsed into silence thinking of how and where it must have got lost.
"Umm Asad... what about our other things? The things that were in our apartment... Like our marriage certificate and things... where are they?" Zoya asked hesitatingly after a while.
"I have no idea Zoe... and frankly all these days I did not think about all that... I was too disturbed and distracted by your absence in my life that I could not think about all those things." Asad said sadly.
"Could it be with your parents Asad?... they must have surely gone to the apartment to collect your things...if so they must have seen it and it must be with them."
"But that's strange Zoe...I mean if Abbu and Ammi had seen it they must know about us... but I don't think they know...it's unlike them to keep it and pretend as if they don't know that I'm married." Asad was confused.
"They could have done it to protect you Asad... may be they thought it wasn't a good idea to talk to you regarding me and our marriage while you were suffering so much and they may have kept silent due to that."
"That's also possible Zoe... and I agree that in the initial days they could have done it because I was not in a condition to talk about anything... but then later after my condition improved, I feel they would have talked about it if they knew...Zoe, my marriage is not something simple for them to ignore it for long... and also if they knew about us, they would surely have understood that I was missing you like hell and my mom would not have let me go on like that. She would have said something and would have even tried to bring you back to me... I'm sure of it."
"I guess you are right." Zoya sighed. She started worrying once again wondering where their marriage certificate could be if Asad's parents did not have it.
"Zoe."She heard Asad's voice and came out of her thoughts.
"Something just struck me... you said your Abbu had gone to Paris and brought you back... could it be that the hospital handed over your things including the ring to your Abbu?"
"Abbu?" Zoya sat straight and looked at Asad's face wondering why she had not thought of it till now.
"Asad, you are right... that's possible... and Abbu might have kept it with him and did not give it to me." Zoya agreed and then she suddenly wondered if her Abbu had done it purposefully or not and if so whether it meant that her Abbu knew that she was married to Asad even then. The ring was after all not a simple ring and anyone who had looked at it would guess that it was actually a wedding band. The thought disturbed Zoya so much. It was hard for her to even think that her Abbu knew about the ring because that would mean her Abbu knew about her marriage to Asad but purposefully kept that hidden and had made her get married to Ayaan. Zoya knew how cunning her Abbu was but still she could never imagine her Abbu doing something such as that and her mind refused to believe that such a thing could have happened; but her heart was beating with apprehension and dismay. And she realized that she had to somehow find about the ring as well as the marriage certificate quickly.
Brentwood, that same evening:
Zainab was walking along the corridor of the first floor of their mansion when she heard some voices coming from Ghaffur's study. Her curiosity arose and she went near the door which was slightly open and peeped inside to see that it was Ayaan with whom Ghaffur was talking. She then knew that she had to listen to whatever they were saying at any cost.
She had received a phone call from a distressed Zoya that afternoon asking her to find out where her wedding ring was. Zoya had asked her to check all her belongings once again and see if the ring was there in her room or not. And she had then told her that may be the hospital gave the ring to her Abbu and her Abbu might have suspected something and had kept it with him. Zoya had also told her about the court case and Zainab was outraged to know that Ayaan and Ghaffur had gone to that extent in order to disrupt Asad and Zoya's life.
And the whole afternoon Zainab had spent going through Zoya's things but she could not find the ring. And as the day passed by, even Zainab's suspicion grew that the ring was with Siddique and nowhere else.
"Uncle I have prepared the case as per your instructions... but we would easily loose the case if they have the marriage certificate and submits it to the court...I'm sure you also know this so why did you still insist on doing this?... I don't understand your intentions uncle." Zainab heard Ayaan saying and came out of her thoughts. She moved away from the doorway and stood a little to one side so that Ayaan and Ghaffur would not see her if they happened to look in that direction.
"Ayaan I know that what we have against them is very weak... but what if they don't have the marriage certificate as they claim? Then they cannot prove anything in the court... and there is another reason why I wanted you to go to the court... I have a feeling that Zoya had not told anything to Asad regarding you and her marriage to you...and by going to court Zoya will be forced to tell him everything."
"You mean you want Asad to know about Zoya's marriage to me? In that case we could simply tell Asad about it without going to court also isn't it?"
"Yea we could Ayaan... but that won't achieve much. If they really love each other so much as they claim, when Zoya explains to him that she did it because she had memory loss and we had pressurized her, Asad would be all understanding and we will not achieve anything... but a case in the court would surely create some tension in their relationship and it may in turn lead to some misunderstandings between them as well... so Ayaan either way we have nothing to loose by going to court. And if we are lucky we will only gain something out of this... and we will also gain some time to think of what else we can do to bring Zoya back here and back in to your life."
"Uncle, I understand now... and I must say that you are very wise and should I say cunning as well?" Ayaan smiled.
"To live in this world one must know how to be cunning Ayaan Beta... you are still young and nave." Ghaffur laughed.
And after witnessing the way Ghaffur was planning and plotting against his own daughter and her happiness, Zainab started trembling with rage. She wanted to go inside and confront Ghaffur immediately but then she realized that she had to tread carefully with him. Zoya had told her to search for the ring without alerting her Abbu and Zainab had to still do that as well. So she controlled her anger and silently left from there; making plans in her mind to search Ghaffur's room as soon as possible. She knew that she and Zoya did not have much time left to do anything if Ayaan had already filed the case in the court.
