Part 5:
Aahil blinked away the shine in his eyes.
Aahil: We both know there is more to it than that.
Sanam blistered: There is nothing more to it. I married you for money. I wanted money. I needed money and your mother provided it for me in return for my hand in marriage. That's it.
I don't need to give him a defense of my character. He already thinks I married him for money.
Aahil shook his head: No. If you needed money, you could have asked me.
Sanam scoffed: Oh yes, so you could have me sign indentured servitude papers? I needed ten lakhs, if I need to work six months to pay off two lakhs, how long would I have to suffer under you for ten!?
Aahil looked straight at her: Yet, you signed up for a lifetime with me.
Sanam was stumped. She took a deep breath, she would win this argument.
Sanam: Well, your mother only needs three months to get your papers done. After that, we don't have to be together. Woh better deal tha, ten lakhs ke liye three months bohot kam hai.
Aahil's heart sank, she didn't want this marriage. That was already apparent, but she meant the temporary arrangement too. Why was she kissing him like that at the hospital if she only meant this to last for three months? She wasn't the type to do that.
Aahil: What did you do with the ten lakhs? Aapka dhaba toh sirf...
Sanam walked away.
Aahil: I AM NOT DONE YET!
Sanam froze. A chill went down her spine. She had never seen him this angry.
Aahil came up to face her: What were those ten lakhs for?

Sanam: Ek behtar zindegi ke liye. To run away with Rehan! Isn't that what you think!? Itna hi jante hai aap mujhe.
Aahil: I wasn't thinking anything like that and you KNOW IT! You don't have that money on you. What did you do with it?
Sanam: Forget what I did with it. Sukar kijiye ke us ten lakhs ke liye you weren't left alone at the alter.
Aahil angrily: Oh, you think I can't attract a woman? How contradictory is that when you have been accusing me of just that since you rejected me? I can have any woman in Bhopal. Who do you think you are that you came to my rescue?
Sanam smirked: Yes, aap Bhopal ke Nawab hai, koi bhi gold digger shaadi karlenge aapse. But ahem mauke pe woh bhi aapko chordeti hai. Remember Nidha? Ran away despite how much she loved your money. That's because no one wants the real you!
Aahil looked like she had just stabbed him. Guilt stabbed at her. Why did she just say that? That was uncalled for. In her quest to go for what hurt most, she had now crossed the line. Sanam saw how his defenses fell.

Aahil smiled sadly: Using my own words against me now, are we...wife? I told you I was the monster who could not get true love after I confessed that I was abused as a child.
Sanam was immediately regretful.
Sanam cried in alarm: Nehi mera woh matlab nehi tha!
She moved toward him, arms outstretched. Aahil stepped away.
It broke Sanam's heart to see how they could hurt each other. She was crying now.
Aahil: None of your sympathies anymore, Sanam. I see how you view this whole situation now. Well, you do not have to stay the whole three months. Zitne bhi paisa chahiye, hum denge aapko. Chor dijiye aap hume.
They stood staring at each other as the words sank in.

Sanam whispered: P-papers...
Aahil: Woh zaidad mujhe khabhi nehi chahiye thi aur iss price pay karke toh bilkulbhi nehi. Hum nehi sai sakte aapki yeh nafrat! (Tears bubbled up to his eyes).
Sanam slowly: Doh din meine aapke jaisi baat kya karli, aapko saha nehi gaya. Aur aap mehino se mujse aise hi hurt karte aye hai.
Aahil: Difference hai, Sanam! Aap humse hamesha nafrat karte the aur hum aapko p...(he stopped). I want a divorce. Aapko two mehine baad chahiye thi, aur hume abhi chahiye.
Aahil's hands were shaking. Here he was thinking Sanam as wife was the best surprise of his life and he was about to throw this good fortune away with his own hands. No wonder Allah never game him anything. He didn't know how to appreciate a good thing. But Sanam did not make it easy either.
The phone rang. Sanam ran to pick it up. Her heart was pounding so hard she could barely function. That ever familiar sinking feeling made her break out in cold sweat.
Sanam in a shaky voice: He-hello?
Aahil snatched the phone from her hand and turned on speaker phone.
Rahat: Sanam, I have brought your Badi Ammi back from the hospital. I am sorry you had to face all this alone while we were away. She really wants to see you, please come by.
Sanam: I will come. Soon. Thank you, Rahat bhai.
Rahat: Ok, see you soon.
He hung up.
Aahil straightened: Badi Ammi ke liye paise chahiye thi aapko.
It was not a question. It was a statement. Like he knew.
Aahil knew in his heart that she was in dire need to take a step like this.
Sanam accusingly: Mein kya kahungi ab Badi Ammi koh? She wants me to leave this job, she had no idea I married you. What will she go through when I tell her you already want a divorce? Meri ek shaadi already toot chuki hai and she was hit so hard with it.
Aahil shocked: What?
Sanam wiped off her tears and said strongly: Dhoka hua tha meri family ke saat. Shaadi arrange karke, humara pushtaini jewelry leke bhaag geye woh.
Aahil considered this: We will wait until she is better.
Sanam sat on the bed crying: Meri Badi Ammi ko kuch nehi hona chahiye. She is already paralyzed on one side. She won't be able to take anymore.
Sanam would do anything for her grandmother, even put up with him. He knew that from the beginning.
Aahil: She will be fine. Come, let's pay her a visit. You need to introduce us.
Sanam in awe: You would do that despite...despite...
Aahil: Differences humare beech mein hai. It is not her fault and neither should she pay the price when she is already suffering so much. Come, we need to pay our respects.
Outside...
Aahil ushered Sanam toward the car.
Driver: Aahil baba, I have to take Bari Begum and Asma Begum to the doctor's. Will I call the new driver for you? He's my distant cousin. He's very good. No need for training.
Aahil nodded.
Sanam waited patiently by his side. When Aahil noticed how she was silently praying, he took her hand in his.
Aahil: She will be fine.
Sanam nodded.
Sanam: Anwar!
The new driver jumped back. Before Aahil could understand what was going on, his Begum had pounced on the new driver, scratching at him and beating him with all her might.
Anwar cowered as Aahil plucked Sanam away from him. He made a run for it as Sanam shrieked in protest.
She was kicking and screaming in his arms.
Aahil: What kind of behavior is this, Sanam!?
Sanam: Woh hi hai!!! That's Anwar! That's Anwar! He's the one who betrayed me.
The security guards ran up toward them.
Aahil: Go get him!
They obeyed.
Aahil sighed and let go: That's the guy you were going to marry?
Sanam set her hair in place, panting: Yes.
Aahil: This is one eventful day. Come, they will keep him while we visit Badi Ammi.
Sanam: I will drive.
Aahil: With that temper? No, thank you. We don't want you mowing anyone down now.
Sanam: You can't drive with your hand. Come.
In the car...
Aahil whispered: Did you love him?
Sanam answered honestly: No.
Aahil: Well, he and I have something in common then.
Sanam made a face, but took that. He was hurt and she had said enough for one day.

At Rahat's place...
Aahil was about to enter the Badi Ammi's room as the voices floated out.
Badi Ammi was mumbling, barely understandable: Shaadi karli...Rehan se?
Aahil stopped dead. That old jealousy coming back without warning.
Sanam: Nehi nehi, Badi Ammi. Aahil se. Chotti Begum ke bete?
Badi Ammi: Nehi! Aisa nehi ho sakta.
Sanam confused: Kyu nehi, Badi Ammi?
Badi Ammi: Tu nehi samajti...(she cried).
Aahil was upset. Why did Badi Ammi already disapprove of him?
He entered the room with a knock.
Sanam: Yeh Aahil hai, Badi Ammi.
Aahil: Adab, Badi Ammi. He touched her feet.
He felt queasy as the old woman scanned him up and down.
Badi Ammi: I want to talk to him alone.
Sanam left the room.
Aahil was very quiet on his way back. Sanam looked at him a few times, hoping Aahil would volunteer the information.
Sanam, driving: What did she say to you?
Aahil: It is between her and me.
Sanam: She is my Badi Ammi.
Aahil: And now mine too. Thanks to your charity marriage.
Sanam: I-want-to-know.
Aahil: She said you are emotionally stupid and I needed to be patient with you. Okay?
So this was part 5. It was getting long, so this is what you get in a rush update. I am sorry it took long. I am losing interest because the readership has been falling. Hope it was enjoyable for those of you who stuck around. Write to me to let me know.
