"Ah Shabnam Bi wahan hai! Usse mil leti hoon, mubarak baad jo dena hai," Dilshaad announced, a few minutes after they'd walked into the function hall. Najma immediately followed behind her mother, while Zoya chose to look around for Fareed instead. Asad grit his teeth as he rudely waved his arm in front of Zoya's face in the direction of his mother and sister, earning a glare from Zoya. But she still obliged, turning to walk after Najma. Asad relaxed his jaw and prepared to follow behind the three women as well.
"ZOYA?! Aagayi tum??" Asad heard a heavily accented male voice yell in delight over the music playing in the background, making Zoya stop in her tracks and turn towards it. Asad stopped behind her too, as he watched a flash of baby blue fly past him and crash into Zoya, enveloping her in a tight hug. Asad found himself clenching his palm into a tight fist, as he watched Zoya squeal in delight while returning the hug.
Asad looked down at his own dark blue sherwani, and then back up at the two friends dressed in the same shade of blue. He'd overheard Zoya tell his mother that she'd chosen a blue lehenga to wear at the function, so he took this dark blue sherwani out for himself. How was he to know that this Fareed fellow would end up wearing blue clothes as well, that too of exactly the same shade as Zoya? This man had managed to piss Asad off within seconds of his arrival, without even saying anything. He scowled as he waited for the hug to end just so he could see his face.
"Ah it's been so long Zoya! Have you fallen in love with India so much that you can't be bothered to come back to the States? We're all really missing you honey!" Fareed drawled in his American accent as he pulled away from Zoya. Asad instinctively took a step forward and then stopped himself in time. He missed the fact that Zoya had blushed in response to Fareed's question about falling in love because he was too busy trying to burn a hole in Fareed's annoyingly handsome face. Who was this badtameez guy, calling Zoya honey in her face?!
As if on cue, the music in the background switched and Badtameez Dil from the Ranbir Kapoor starrer began to play. Asad rolled his eyes upwards as he cursed his luck, while Fareed tugged Zoya onto the dance floor in the meantime, as the two friends laughingly fell into a goofy dance routine that seemed to be obviously memorized from somewhere else.
"So Zoya, those people you came in with are the people living in the house you're at?" Fareed asked as Zoya jigged in sync with him and the music. Zoya nodded happily, as she turned over to find Phuphi and Najma mingling around in the crowd and pointed at them.
"That's Dilshaad Phuphi, and yes I'm living at her house. And that cute girl standing next to her is her daughter, Najma. Fareed, you have no idea how lovely these people are! I've been having a ball ever since I came here..." Zoya began to gush, but Fareed cut her off in the middle.
"Yeah that girl is cute Zoya, but you forgot to tell me about the guy who's been burning a hole in my back ever since he laid eyes on me," Fareed said cheekily, and chuckled as he watched Zoya throw a quick glance in the man's direction, her cheeks instantly reddening up.
"Woh... He's Mr Asad Ahmed Khan, Phuphi's son... Just ignore him," Zoya finally mumbled in reply, as she turned her attention back to Fareed. Fareed laughed openly in response, and Zoya whacked his arm in a bid to stop the laughter.
"Mr Asad Ahmed Khan?! Zoya, do mahine hogaye, and you're not even on a first name basis with this guy? Zoya why are you even trying to hide it from me, when you know you can't. Accha bataao, kya chakkar chal raha hai tum dono ke beech?" Fareed slurred in his accent again, just as the song came to an end. Zoya opened and closed her mouth stupidly for a while, trying to find the words to explain herself.
Asad was immediately grateful as the song ended and Zoya stopped doing that awful dance with Fareed. He had to admit that she still looked good doing it, despite the fact that the steps were silly. The music of the next song began to play and Asad looked up at the speaker in shock. He turned back to Fareed who was offering his hand to Zoya for the next dance and immediately began walking towards them. There was no way in hell he was going to allow Fareed to dance with Zoya on this song.
"Dhaage tod laaun chandni se noor ke," the lyrics of the song sounded just as Asad intervened and grabbed Zoya's arm right before she could place her palm in Fareed's. Zoya stared at Asad in shock for a moment, drowning in his intense eyes immediately. Asad tugged at her arm and pulled her away from the dance floor wordlessly, stopping near a wall at the corner of the hall.
"Yeh kya badtameezi hai Mr Khan?" Zoya snapped at Asad as her back hit the wall behind her. She struggled against his grip on her arm, trying to pry away his fingers with her free hand. His eyes traced down to where he had gripped her arm, and he loosened it immediately.
"Badtameezi toh woh insaan kar raha tha, aapke saath aisi behuda si dance karke," Asad replied angrily, as Zoya rubbed her arm exaggeratedly as soon as he let go of her. Zoya returned his glare once she was done, huffing loudly.
"There was nothing badtameez about anything he was doing. He was just dancing with me like any normal person would do at a sangeet. Don't hold it against him just because he's not a khadoos like you. Ab mujhe jaane dijiye, Fareed is waiting for me," Zoya replied calmly, pushing against Asad's shoulder lightly as she made space for herself. She took a step away from him, and found herself immediately disappointed when he made no attempt to stop her, choosing instead to stare at the wall.
"Waise bhi Aapi mujhe kabse keh rahi thi that I should just marry Fareed since we've been such good friends in the US for years now," Zoya mumbled as she walked away, but in an intentionally loud voice so that Asad could hear it. She hid her grin as she felt Asad's fingers encircle her upper arm yet again, pulling her against that very wall and caging her in. He said nothing though, just glared down at her, as if he was challenging her to continue.
"What's wrong Mr Khan? Aapi jo kuch bhi keh rahi thi, theek hi toh keh rahi thi. Fareed is an extremely nice, sensible person, and he's really intelligent and good looking too," Zoya continued defiantly, keeping her eyes fixed on Asad's. She watched as Asad s eyes flickered for a split second, before he looked away, lowering his arms from the wall and taking a step back.
But that split second was enough for Zoya to understand what had happened. The anger in his eyes had dissolved and changed to hurt and disappointment, which is why he had looked away. Zoya felt a deep ache in her heart, her own anger melting away as well.
"Par aapse zyada nahi," Zoya finally whispered, as she took a step forward and rested her palm on Asad's cheek, guiding him to face her again. She watched the hurt in Asad's eyes turn into confusion, and then slowly into relief, with a glint of happiness. She placed her hands on his shoulders as support as she went onto the tip of her toes, resting her forehead against his.
"Bol na halke halke, bol na halke halke, dhoop se halke halke, bol na halke," Asad closed the distance between their faces as the beautiful lyrics of the song floated in the background, pressing his lips against hers. He felt Zoya's lips smile against his as she returned the kiss, and he immediately lifted his hand to trace the side of her face with his finger, finding the dimple that would've definitely formed as a result of that smile. He let his finger dance in and out of that small dent on her face as soon as he found it, giving her all his attention as he kissed her more urgently.
The sudden blare of Imran Khan's Madhubala through the speakers made Asad and Zoya pull apart in shock, totally unaware that Bol Na Halke had ended because they were so wrapped up in each other. Zoya shared a look with Asad as memories from that song came rushing in, and smiled as Asad's slipped his palm into hers and laced their fingers together, guiding her towards the dance floor with him.
"Fareed!" Asad grunted in anger, as soon as they reached the dance floor. Zoya stared at him in confusion. She was right here with him, hand-in-hand, so why was he getting angry with Fareed again? She followed the direction of his glare and immediately covered her mouth with her free hand as she suppressed her giggle.
"Mr Khan! Woh sach mein accha ladka hai! Kasamh se!" Zoya tried to reason with Asad as he dragged her towards Fareed, who was unabashedly dancing with a highly joyous Najma. Zoya shook her head in amusement. Only Allah could save her friend Fareed now!
The End (:
