Hi,

Apologies if this may seem unrelated to QH but the QH meteor shower sequence brought me here.

I just thought I'd let you all know that there is a meteor shower tonight across the UK skies,
which will be seen between 10.30pm till about 5am tonight and I believe it was also viewable yesterday in the wee hours of the morning.

I've been outside - it's a little chilly where I am but the sky is starting to light up beautifully with stars and a few shooting stars so far.

So if you want to recreate the meteor -shower-AsYa-sequence ... where ever you are in the UK then now would be the perfect opportunity to do so & make all the wishes you want.
(As long as the sky is clear and there are no clouds blocking your view that is.)

Some of my friends from the university I attend captured this image earlier, they are astrophysicists (which I am not) hence I will not explain what they have marked on here:

The image can also be viewed on http://www.jodrellbank.manchester.ac.uk/astronomy/nightsky/Perseids3.jpg, which will be updated soon.

Yes there will be one tonight. It is called the Perseids shower or something along those lines estimated with 10 to 15 meteors an hour seen on a clear sky.

And the peak dates of the shower is Monday night (tonight) into the early hours of Tuesday morning, when up to 100 meteors an hour can be seen.

My friend says look for bright streaks of light that shoot across the sky so fast they can be seen in the blink of an eye.

My sis is in Northumberland & she's seen a lot more than I have :(
I've seen 2 sadly and a lot of stars which is weird because I never see that many stars in Manchester's night sky and it's cloudy which is ruining the view.

I agree it is really pretty outside 😳
The best time to view them is after 1am, clear dark sky :)

I've never seen any 😭 but that's cuz I never use to pay attention to stuff like this before ... but tonight I'm determined to see one! 😊 I have to wait a few hours though, it's only 7pm here :(

Ditto - not before QH anyhow, I love science but not star gazing. However I'm trying to enjoy this while I can. Ps I guess you are situated on the other side of the Atlantic 😳

I have seen a few only tonight but I'll stay awake for one more hour.

There are more opportunities in the year for meteor shower viewing:

Perseids August 12, 2013 (best seen in the northern hemisphere)

Orionids October 21, 2013

Leonids November 17, 2013

Geminids December 14, 2013

If you're situated in a brightly lit city, and cloudy skies - definitely use binoculars 😳
