CHAPTER 2
-THE PAST PAYS A VISIT-
oOo
The party was going well. Asad was lost in a conversation with a few people and Zoya was having a blast with Zohar and Parveen. They were telling her incidences about their honeymoon and their life after it, sending Zoya into fits of laughter. Parveen got up to receive her mother at the door, leaving Zohar and Zoya alone.
"So what does Asad do?"
Zoya flinched as Asad's words came back to her. Not a word about my work.
"Just what you guys do. Business." She said with a giggle, trying to joke. Zohar frowned but thankfully let the topic pass.
Asad looked around and found Zoya in the company of a man who she had once gone out with. He remembered his high school days. He was a loner and girls used to run away from him. He didn't know whether he was jealous or whether he was possessive. He was just angry. And his eyes just saw what they didn't want to see. Zoya with Zohar, laughing away to glory.
A fit of anger filled him as he abandoned his drink and walked up to the two of them, stopping them from laughing abruptly.
"We have to go." Asad pulled Zoya's arm.
"Ouch!" Zoya yelped and Zohar came forward.
"Woah! Easy man. She's your wife, not your dirt." Zohar said in a low voice as Asad walked away with Zoya. He stopped and turned around abruptly.
"What did you say?" Asad asked him.
Zoya panicked as she saw the anger in his eyes, "Asad..please, let's just leave." She tried to pull him out.
Asad jerked his arm out of her hand and walked up to Zohar, "Say it again." He said, looking in to his eyes.
"I said don't treat her like she's your dirt." Zohar muttered fearlessly.
That was it. It was the final blow for Asad. He swung his fist through the air and it collided with Zohar's jaw. Zohar fought back and did so until Parveen called the security and threw Asad out. She refused to even look at Zoya and shut the door on their face.
oOo
"I hate you." Zoya murmured, on their way back home.
"Excuse me?" Asad thought he was driving.
"I said, I hate you." Zoya said the same words a little louder this time.
"Don't do it, Zoya. You know what I do when I'm angry." Asad warned her.
"You're going to hit me, right? Or kill me at the most. Just do it! I wanna get this over with." Zoya screeched.
Asad shut his eyes to refrain himself from losing control over his driving and do what his hands were itching to do. He had been brought up in such an environment and such a family that only knew violence. His father used to hit his mother ruthlessly. It wasn't too late for him to pick up his father's deeds. After all, children learned what they saw. He turned out to be just like his father. Abusive and short-tempered.
The rest of the car ride was filled with Zoya's sobs and Asad's groans of anger. Every time she sniffed, he fought the urge to explode on her. He knew it scared her and sometimes he felt good. To see her so scared and fearful of him. It wasn't normal. But then there was this unwanted feeling that would creep in a few moments later. Regret. He hated it, but it came naturally.
Asad parked in to the street and led Zoya inside the house. Zoya ran to the bedroom and shut the door loudly, bolting it. This infuriated Asad to no end and he began banging on the door.
"Open the damn door, Zoya!" Asad hit his palm on the door.
"Go away!" He heard Zoya's sob.
"You know I'm never leaving you. Just open the f**kin door before I break it. I've done it before and I'll do it again." Asad warned her. He had done it once earlier too.
Then the door flew open and out walked Zoya with a small bag. Asad's eyes darted from her face to her hands which were holding the bag tightly. Her eyes were lowered but determined. Asad balled his fist and walked up to her.
"What the hell is this?" He roared.
Zoya flinched and said, "I'm leaving."
"You aren't. Now get back into the room and go to sleep." He told her calmly, hardly.
"Did you not hear what I said? I do not want to live with you anymore." Zoya finally raised her eyelashes and looked into his intense eyes.
Asad stared at her face for a few seconds and then picked her up in his arms. Zoya kicked and kicked, but obviously was nothing against his strong muscular grip. The tears of frustration became evident as Asad threw her on the bed.
"I've been through a lot of trouble to get you in my life, Zoya. Just don't make me do something that I'm going to regret later. Please."
"Trouble? You made me fall in love with you deliberately. I wouldn't have even noticed a snob like you but you made me notice you and respond to you. How did I let this happen to myself?" Zoya clutched her head in her hands.
"How could you let this happen to yourself? Why are you talking as if you did not want this and I forced you into marrying me?!" He yelled.
"Because you did! You blinded me with your lies and hurt me when we I tried to defy you! You've never been a good husband or a good human being! All you care about is you and your mistress!"
"Damn it Zoya! I told you she's gone. Done. You are the only woman I will ever see naked in my bed!" He dropped himself over her on the bed and kissed her with a vigor that blew her mind. She pushed him away and breathed heavily.
Asad shut his eyes and said, "Just go to sleep. We'll talk tomorrow." He laid his head on her chest and heard her erratic heartbeat, causing him to fall asleep.
oOo
"Happy Birthday, Zoya." Zoya whispered to herself and stood at the window. It was now 12 am and her birthday was officially over. The cold war had continued between them the next day when it was her birthday so there was no chance of him wishing her. He hated birthdays and the whole point of celebration. He had blasted her in the initial days of their relationship when she had set up a birthday party for him, trying to make him happy. Now she didn't even know whether he knew when her birthday was. Because he never cared.
She sighed and turned around when she saw him standing behind her. He looked tired and weary. Like she wasn't!
"It was your birthday today?" He asked her.
"Wrong. It was yesterday. It's over now." She mumbled and walked towards her bed.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"You hate birthdays, unlike many other husbands who probably worship the day their beautiful wives came into their life." She said, lying down on the bed.
"You think I don't appreciate your existence in my life?" Asad asked incredulously.
"Doesn't matter, Asad. Just go to bed..it's late." She switched off the bedside lamp and dozed off. Well, at least she tried to.
oOo
"I want all tabs on him. I don't care what you have to do to get the man but I.WANT.HIM." Asad yelled into his phone and threw it on the bed.
He had to plan so much for Zoya's birthday. Well, belated birthday to be precise! He thought of throwing her a party but recently their image in the media and friends wasn't very good. Like he cared! But she did. She was pretty sensitive to the rash tongue of a few people. So he planned for a typical candle light dinner at home with no interference from the people of outside. Then again he cancelled it out. Off lately, there was nothing normal between them. He didn't think that she even wanted to look at his face anymore.
He was blank. He sucked at being all warm and goey. Well, not in bed. He was just that in bed. But otherwise, he didn't know the R of romance. Lately he had started to get these feelings of being something or someone different just for her. He didn't want to change but she was forcing him to. Not literally, but yes to an extent. He wanted to change. No he didn't. GOD!
"There's someone down for you." Zoya broke his revere.
"Who is it?" He frowned. This place was sealed.
"Some man. He said he knew something about GERM."
Asad flinched as he heard the word from her mouth. GERM. Shit.
He ran out of the room with Zoya following him right behind. He ran down the stairs and saw a man in his late 50's sitting on the couch and sipping a beer. He was right. It was him. His father. And along with him, came the log lost mention of GERM.
oOo
Okay, so here's chapter 2. Errmm, like I said there's a lot of lose ends in the story and it's only going to get worse. Take this as the first revelation to Asad's past. Keep the questions coming, I love it when you'll ask 'em questions because it makes my writing feel worthy. :)
P.S - I know GERM is not something you'd like. 😆 But the name is an endearment. Well, not exactly. It's not something or rather someone Asad cares about.;)
"Damn it Zoya! I told you she's gone. Done. You are the only woman I will ever see naked in my bed!"
