Sorry to jump in, but I would just like to say something here. I think in India, ppl have mixed hindi n urdu so much as now they cannot recognize when some1 is speaking in urdu only or in hindi only. I, being a Pakistani, think that the language used in this show is urdu (very few words are hindi). It's because in Pak, we are not taught hindi (also, the pt. to be noted is urdu is influenced from many languages and hindi is one of them).

@ bold: You make an interesting point. The language of North India and also Pakistan before Independence was 'Hindustani', a mixture of Hindi and Urdu. Colloquially this is what is still spoken in large parts of India, and this is what you hear in Bollywood films.
Hindustani derives from Persian, Arabic, Sanskrit and Turkic. At the time of India's independence Hindustani was being groomed by the British to be the official language of both India and Pakistan, but India opted to use Hindi with the Devanagri script as one of its (now 23) official languages, and Pakistan Urdu with the Perso-Arabic script.

Agreed.
Actually it's Hindi that is influenced from urdu, countless words we use everyday are actually persian/urdu...(farsi maybe?) in origin, so yes, i might not be able to see the difference, because most of the stuff they say,i understand. Haww, i didn't know ki urdu and hindi were that similar! 😲 Chalo, new learnings every day 😃

Really cause as far as I know...shops like McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Dominoes etc and names of schools and work places are all written in English so I'm not sure how u got that idea but maybe if u say so Sadia :)

McDonalds, pizza hut etc are rare and limited to the comparatively educated Metros and bigger cities. Also, the language used by McDonalds and Pizza hut isn't exactly an indicator of anything. There are villages, small towns, even people in Metros who can't read/speak english. The show caters to many indians who aren't familiar with English as well. I got that idea from living in India, and well the statistics too speak for themselves. As someone said above your post, the number of people in india who know english is actually below 20%

I dont think only 12.16 % of Indians speak English...These statistics is of the year 2000 yaar 😆but even if its not and only 12.16 % speak English...I think more people can read English then can speak it cause I know a lot of people...basically my entire extended family who live in India...who can write English very well but dont speak it very well so...Anyways...like I told Sadia today...if people who dont know how to read English watch Qubool Hai then how will they read "Qubool Hai" or "Zee TV" 🤣

I didn't even get the first part of your msg :P
but on second thought i may have jumped in, i think you were referring to someone called sadia, at first i thought sadia was your name, but I guess not, my bad 😆

Yes, they are pretty common in urban areas, but india has a huuuge rural population too...Same for work places/schools etc, even they are in English in urban places only. And only 31% is urban population. In fact in many schools even subjects like Science and Maths are taught in regional languages/hindi...not english

Okay this quote thing is getting reaally long and confusing so let's just end it :P

I get where you're coming from, TM.

Personally, let's just say I was thankful the message wasn't written in Urdu.

I am a South Indian , Non-Muslim who lives on a diet of Hindi soaps. I am fairly proficient in Hindi and this is the reason I can follow the show. But Urdu...I wouldn't have understood the script.

India is by no means a homogeneous country, and when you have a diverse audience comprised of people like me in a southern state and someone in Gujarat watching the same show, which is in Hindi BTW, it is better to stick to Hindi for purely practical reasons.

And can I say that with this topic you have lived up to your reputation once again😆 I used to visit 'Geet' forum, so I know😊

Yes the percentage of Indians speaking English is undoubtedly more than 12.16%, which was the figure in 2000. But this figure is for people who speak English any which way, not necessarily fluently. The number of people who are able to read English is bound to be much lower. Reading a language is predicated on the ability to speak it and not the other way around. But I guess you're having a laugh here. 😉😊

This topic still lives? 😆

Ok, my point is quite simple ... I'm not going into details again. I have read the comments defending my post, but the point still remains the same --
If Asad knows how to write Hindi then why not Urdu? It doesn't make sense that he speaks Urdu but writes in Hindi. I'm sorry, as smart as his character looks (Dumb when comes to Tanvir), how is it ... he is comfortable with the script of an other culture but not his own?
It's still hard to get around it.
