For your information, in Indian schools, Hindi is taught for at least 8 years in school (it is the official language of India). After those 8 years, students are given a choice to either continue with Hindi for the next 4, or choose Urdu, Sanskrit or any of their regional languages.

Secondly, assuming that Indian Muslims don't know how to read or write Urdu is the biggest joke and reflects on your knowledge of the language's origin. Kabhi Delhi, Lucknow jaake dekhiye. Urdu wahan paida huyi thi aur aaj bhi abaad hai.

Coming to why not use written Urdu in Indian shows? Yes, it's an Indian show..it's not targeted to only Indian Muslims. It's targeted to the entire Indian population. India has at least TWENTY TWO recognized regional languages (not including English), whose script and dialect/pronunciations are completely different. So yes, not every Muslim in India knows how to write or read or even speak Urdu as Urdu. India is a diverse multicultural country and only people who live there, have been brought up there or have studied about will understand this. As for your suggestion, "At least, could have written in Roman English" so, you are assuming everyone knows how to read and write in Roman English? I am going to assume you've never been to or lived in India and that's why you have this point of view. But there is a thing called "common sense" also which may not be as common.

Also, in Pakistani shows, when the written script is in Urdu, do you think EVERYONE in Pakistan is able to read it? Really?

I just want to suggest to you to not be so judgmental that your own argument don't hold any validity.

Peace😊

Yes this show was touted as a social drama however the definition of social drama is when it deals with morality and issues of individuals versus society. And it is still that way...well at least if you see it. Zoya as a character is trying to change the way Asad perceives her of being untraditional and american girl without any manners. She still goes against society but tries to give a good message...
But I don't get how it being a social drama has anything to do with Urdu and Muslims in general 😕

It doesn't relate to anything regarding Urdu or Muslims in general. That was just a question I had. Thanks for clarifying.

@bold - who gave you that little fact? Have you met all educated Bhopali Muslims?

And as i told a another poster - nobody is questioning the importance of Urdu to Muslims but the fact remains that this is a show about Indian Muslims in general who are not obligated to know how to write Urdu. A handful of Muslims do not define what Muslim culture is.

The show is made in India for an Indian audience. Gul is under no obligation to have her characters speak or write Urdu.

1 billion is the total population if India, notIndian Muslims, Muslims are only about 13% in the population, so as for prevelance of Urdu speakers, do the math yourself.

Largest population of Indian Muslims reside in UP, Bihar and West Bengal where the largest no. Of Urdu speakers live. So I can safely say that Urdu is the language of majority of Indian Muslims.

Be assured I hv met quite a few Bhopali Muslims. U see I, unlike you talk only abt facts, not prejudices and pre-concieved notions.

As regards Gul Khan being under any obligations, nobody has said anywhere, anything about 'obligations'. All we talked about was that it would hv been 'desirable' to hv Urdu script shown in the show. Plz read carefully befor you comment.
And since you seem to be slow at seeing other ppl'z POV.

160 million Muslims and you are saying majority? Ok I'll go with the flow...

It seems it is you who can't grasp someone elses POV.

@bold - desirable for who?

You have met Bhopali Muslims...so what? Does that mean you know all Muslims who live in Bhopal. It is you who has per-conceived notions or maybe you just don't like the fact that people disagree with you?

how many of these 160 million are educated??/do you know that more than 40% of India's Muslims are illiterate. how many 'educated Muslims' does that leave us with??
It seems it is you who can't grasp someone elses POV.

@bold - desirable for who? desirable for educated muslims like me

Bhopal was founded by nawabs, who were famous for their Urdu. And FYI I hav relatives living there. So I know what I am talking about
Whats your problem with Urdu and Muslim culture?? coz u cannot dissociate Urdu from Muslim culture. As for listening to others POV, you havn't given me one factual evidence that Urdu is NOT a cultural symbol of Indian Muslims.

I really need to stop jumping in 😕
But bah! Thoda troll hi kar lu!

"Bhopal was founded by nawabs, who were famous for their Urdu"?! So?! How does this make sense? Anything i say further will probably be inane, but a befitting answer definitely.
Is Asad necessarily a descendant of these people? Being "Famous for urdu" means that after centuries too things will not change at all?! Seriously what do the founders of Bhopal and their urdu have to do with One particular family?

And the next one baffles me even more
"And FYI I hav relatives living there. So I know what I am talking about"
WHAT? You have relatives in Bhopal and you therefore know "What you're talking about" Woot?! This defies all logic i have! But I will logically answer this one when I answer the last.

No one has any problem with Muslim culture or urdu! Why take everything the wrong way? She never said she had a problem? Why take everything so personally?!

Neither is anyone disassociating Urdu with Islam, its urdu and MAINSTREAM indian-muslim culture. Heck, not even that, it's one PARTICULAR family in a fictional show!

and as to the last point, " As for listening to others POV, you havn't given me one factual evidence that Urdu is NOT a cultural symbol of Indian Muslims."
Using your very logic, If she has relatives, who are muslim, who aren't familiar with Urdu, then automatically, "She knows what she's talking about" ? You'll take that as proof, "Factually evidence" that urdu isn't a cultural symbol for Indian-Muslims? This is the same logic that you used when you said that "So I know what I am talking about".

Look, i didn't mean to get offensive/interrupt and i'm sorry for doing so, but I don't understand why people are taking this as an attack/something offensive. It isn't even about Urdu and Muslims, or even Urdu and Indian muslims. It's about Asad Ahmed Khan's family, in Qubool Hai.

So sorry, i know i have no place here and am already apologising for poking my totally unrequired nose in. Believe me, i was confused whether or not to post. SORRY! 😕

if you talk about the culture of a place, its history definitely has place in it. the whole point of my mentioning the nawabs of Bhopal was that Urdu is a part of Bhopali culture.

my having relatives in Bhopal means I know a thing or two about the culture of that place.
No one has any problem with Muslim culture or urdu! Why take everything the wrong way? She never said she had a problem? Why take everything so personally?!

I m not taking anything personally, your friend is hell bent on dissociating Urdu from Muslim culture, I wanna know why.

no individual or family exists on its own... our personalities, rituals, traditions are all influenced by our cultural surroundings...and Indian TV shows are famous for their culture. so how can you say its about One family..especially when they are being shown as so deep rooted. I am sorry but its disturbing that a culture is being shown in the wrong way.
and as to the last point, " As for listening to others POV, you havn't given me one factual evidence that Urdu is NOT a cultural symbol of Indian Muslims."

I never said all muslims know Urdu, I said a majority of literate ones do and those who don't would benefit from seeing it on TV.
i take your point that her being a muslim is factual evidence...but its just one against my many.
