Hello all! So here's the asyalicious chapter I promised :) And a little fun at the end :)

Hope you like it! I'll be going on a vacation for the next couple days so the next update won't be until after the weekend. Hence why I made this one extra long :)

Also I'm dedicating this chapter to Aileen134, -Yaz-, januable_sammy and x_Mishti_x for all their wonderful and long comments :)

Hope you like it!

Chapter 17: "Reminiscing"

In the wee hours of the night, Zoya kept tossing and turning. And to make matters worse, having Najma next to her made her conscious and guilty of ruining her sleep. She knew why she couldn't sleep. She couldn't stop thinking about him. Having him at such a close proximity again was... disconcerting. Still she couldn't help but wonder what he was up to. If he could sleep peacefully being in her home. If he was thinking about her and if he had really come all this way, traveling five thousand miles, just for her. Could it really be true? Or did he come only at Phoopi's request?

She'd chided herself all day for thinking about him, but she knew it was futile. He was in her heart, whether she wanted to accept it or not, and there was no point in denying it. But now his presence in her heart was not a pleasant one. Her memories of him were indeed carved into her mind. The dance under the rain, the times he saved her, Mangalpur, and all those times he was her pillar of strength. But his cold and bitter words were seared into her heart, a scar that was a far cry from healing.

She had always forgiven him, because she knew deep down that he was trying to push her away out of fear. Fear of feeling something. Fear of being wrong about her. But this time was different. His words were without remorse. He had gone on her parents before, but that was about behavior, about their differences in upbringing and culture. She could understand that. But this... this time was purely... cruel. He wanted to inflict that same pain on her. Why? Because his own ammi had been insulted? How was that her fault? How could she have anticipated that? Those words... They hurt more than his slap. She cringed. They even hurt more than the slap she received from that horrifying woman. Thank god for make up, or her Aapi and Jeeju would've questioned her about the bruise on her cheek. And the less she was reminded of that humiliating night, the better. But now that he was here, all those memories had come flooding in.

"Enough, Zoya. Just drink some water and try to sleep," she whispered to herself. Looking at the jug next to her bed, she groaned. Empty. Great. She got out of bed, put on her fluffy flip flops, and made her way downstairs to the kitchen. She had to admit, it was nice to be home. She missed the scent of her room, her apartment, and most of all her Aapi and Jeeju. Jeeju. That reminds me, I have to do something to Jeeju. Oh he's gonna get an earful. I can't believe he just invited them to stay here. Phoopi and Najma I love having, but... HIM. She sighed.

* * * * * * *

Asad hadn't slept. He hadn't bothered to even try. Knowing she was just a few feet away, after thinking he'd lost her forever, made his adrenaline pump and his heart beat erratically. So many thoughts were running through his mind. Was she happy to see me at all? Have I hurt her beyond repair? What if I can't get her to forgive me this time? Why did I say those things? ARGHHH! I need air. I can't think straight. How- What can I do to get her to forgive me. To see that I'm sorry. That I will never hurt her again. He closed his eyes. Well, I don't know if I'll ever hurt her again, but I sure as hell won't let it happen that easily. After several more fruitless conversations with himself, Asad decided to go to the balcony. Just the thought reminded him of their place in house in Bhopal, the countless cups of bitter and black coffee she made for him, and the milky and sweet coffee he made for her. He smiled sadly.

He sighed, got out of bed and made his way downstairs. He took in his surroundings. Despite being a small 2 floor loft-like apartment, it certainly had a homey feel to it. There were colorful pillows on every seat, little figurines on the tables and candles everywhere. It was quite different than his white and plain house in India. But he found he rather liked the chaotic color scheme. It didn't seem like he was in New York. Except, of course, for the hustle and bustle on the streets. This truly is the city that never sleeps, thought Asad to himself.

As he walked to towards the balcony, he noticed the light in the kitchen. Who's up at this hour? His heart skipped a beat when he saw the silhouette of a woman. He walked drew himself closer to the her, and felt his stomach somersault as he deciphered who it was. Zoya... Before he could take another step, she turned around and walked straight into him. The glass in her hand, thankfully plastic, fell to the floor with a resounding thud. Before she could hit the ground, he wrapped his arms around her waist.

* * * * * * *

Having finished her water, Zoya turned around to put the glass in the sink. As she took a step she felt herself crash into an all too familiar, hard chest. Losing her balance, she wavered backwards and lost her grip on the glass. Waiting for the floor to welcome her with bruises, she was surprised to feel enveloped by a pair of muscular arms.

Zoya's eyes were shut tight. She knew in an instant who's arms were shielding her from the cold, hard floor. Instinctively, she tugged at his kurta to keep herself from slipping and pulled herself closer to him. Slowly she opened her eyes, and got lost in the chocolate beads looking down at her with concern. Asad...

The whole world disappeared around them. They both looked at each other, intently, longingly and without blinking even once. As if they were afraid this mirage would disappear if they did.

Zoya noticed his eyes and what they were telling her. They were full of pain, of guilt and of care. But there was another new emotion in them, that she couldn't pin point. It was stronger than the care he showed before. It's wasn't lust. It wasn't desire. Though those were quite apparent as well. As she tried to decipher what it was, she noticed a glimmer in his eyes, as if he was... happy?

Asad looked at her beautiful kohl lined eyes. He took in every detail. Her eyelashes, her bangs, her pink cheeks, the blood rushing to them. Even when she's mad, she still manages to blush in my arms, he thought. And that's when he saw it. Although she'd tried to cover it with make up, it was now painfully visible. The bruise on her left cheek... her daily reminder of that horrible day. Of his bitter words. Of her pain. Of her humiliation... His left hand, with a mind of its own, slipped from her waist and slowly made it's way to her cheek.

Zoya felt a dull ache, as she noticed one of his arms retreat. She noticed a change in his eyes. That glimmer was replaced by something else, something dark. He was now looking at her with pained eyes. What's hurting him so much, she wondered. But when she saw his hand reappear near her face, she snapped back to her senses. She pulled herself up right, and pushed him away.

"Aap mujhe girne dete, Mr. Khan. After all, aapko milne se pehle bhi mein bohot giri hoon. Phir bhi mein theek hoon. I'm not made of glass," she said curtly.

Asad flinched a little at her words, but they didn't hurt him nearly as much as the bruise on her face. How could I not see that she was in pain. I just kept yelling at her, accusing her, demeaning her. His thoughts were causing him agony. The idea of him being the person to cause her that kind of pain. And the cheek, the slap... Suddenly his hands started to ball into fists, his eyes brimming with tears.

"Aap... aapne mujhe bataya kyun nahin?" he asked in a small voice, full of anger and self-loathing, looking down. He lifted his gaze and met hers. He saw Zoya blink in confusion.

"Allah miya, what's wrong with you, Mr. Khan? Ab meine kya kiya? Ab konsi nayi inzaam lagane wale hain aap mujhe par? Meine aapko sab bataya hai. Aur vaise bhi mujhe aapko koi expla-" started Zoya. But when she looked at him, her mouth went dry.

He took a step towards her, still holding her gaze, and gently put his hand on her bruised cheek. Zoya sighed in pain, and her eyes widened as she put two and two together. She stepped back from his hand, for the second time that day, and looked down. Why does he keep doing that? He noticed my cheek. Ugh. Great. But he doesn't seem confused. Oh no. That means he knows. Is he... feeling sorry for me? Just the thought of him pitying her irked her.

"Mr. Khan, aapko itni hamdardhi dikhani ki koi zaroorat nahin hai. Mein jaanti hoon aapke saar se bohot bari musibaat utri hai." She saw him wince at her words. Good, she thought. But she couldn't help wonder why there was so much pain in his eyes. Surely it couldn't be for her. He hated her. Didn't he...?

"Zoya..." as he said her name, he saw her eyes widen again. "Mein... tumhe..." How do I tell you, Zoya? That the guilt is eating me alive? I didn't trust you... and in my blind rage, I neglected to see your pain. And hurt you further...

"Aap kya, Mr. Khan?" asked Zoya, softly. She was angry with him. She'd been hurt by him. But she was still Zoya. And she couldn't bear to see someone in pain. Not even him. Especially him, her heart corrected her.

Her soft demeanor gave him hope. She was actually allowing him to speak for once. But he had to know... "Tumne mujhe bataya kyun nahin... ki... Razia ne... tum par... uss din... agar mujhe pata hota... to..." his scattered words mirrored his uneasiness.

As soon as Zoya realized what he meant, she stiffened. He does know. But... what does that mean? "Aap mujh par chila the nahin. Mujhe se woh sari baatein-" He still can't see his mistake. It took a bruise on my face for him to say that he shouldn't have shouted? Except he didn't even say it! UGH! Zoya lost it.

"Mr. Khan, agar aapne woh sab gusse mein kaha, to iska matlab hai ki kahin na kahin aap woh sab maan the hai. Toh mere chere par yeh bruise se kya farak ho sakhta hai? Aapne mujh par bharosa to kya, baat karne ka moka hi nahin diya. Ab kaisa laga."

And with that she left a stunned Asad gaping at her as she stomped back to her room. She's right... Why can't I ever wait for her explanation before blowing a fuse! A defeated Asad made his way to his respective room. There no amount of air in the world that would help with this dilemma. He'd have to get some help in the morning. This will indeed not be easy, thought Asad to himself.

* * * * * * *

The next morning in the New York apartment, all it's residents came down for a 'family' breakfast. Zeenat and Dilshad were busy in the kitchen when Najma, Zoya, Asad and Anwar came to the dining table. Asad looked towards Zoya, hoping to catch a glimpse of her face. But Zoya avoided him like the plague. He sighed. He could see, however, that she had once again covered up the bruise with make up. Looks like she hasn't told them about the sl- Just the thought send a dagger through his heart. Nahin to make up kyun lagati? I've already seen it.

Zoya was trying to be her chirpy self: laughing, reciting shayari's and blabbering non-stop. Asad smiled sadly. Even if it was fake, at least she's trying to be happy. But that thought sent another stab at his heart. Why Zoya, why do you hide your pain in front of others?

His thoughts were interrupted by Dilshad's voice. "Zoya dekho meine tumhare liye kya banaya hai." She put a bowl in front of Zoya on the table. Zoya's eyes grew wide and brimmed with tears. "Phoopi... aapko kaise pata tha. Aap jaan thi hain, mein kal raat ko hi soch rahi thi ki mujhe aapke haaton ki banaywi kheer khane ka dil kar raha tha." She got up from her chair and hugged Dilshad.

Dilshad hugged her back and patted her back, pacifying her. "Meri bachi koi kwaesh kare, aur mujhe pata na ho. Aisa kabhi ho sakhta hai?" She broke the hug and cupped Zoya's face with both her hands. "Ab dil se khalo, hmm?"

At this, Asad couldn't help but smile. At least I did one thing right, he thought triumphantly, as he watched Zoya eat the kheer happily. Her face lit up again, and the spark in her eyes was back. I promise Zoya, from now on, I'll do everything I can to keep you like this: happy, glowing.

Anwar noticed Asad's smile. Dilshad was right. He does indeed love her. He can't keep his eyes off her. He smiled to himself. Time to get the plan in motion. "Uh Zoya, tum Asad aur Najma ko apna sheher nahi dikhao gi? Pehli baar woh dono New York aaiye hai. Mujhe to kaam ke liye jaana hai. Aur Zeenat Dilshad ko shopping ke liye le jaa rahi hai. To tum youngsters ko sightseeing ke liye jaana chaiye," he insisted.

"Par Anwar Jeeju, mujhe bhi shopping karni hai," whined Najma with a pout. Everyone laughed at her childish nature.

"To phir tum bhi hamare saath chalo Najma. Asad Zoya ke saath sightseeing ke liye jaa sakhta hai," said Dilshad, sneaking a peek at both of them. Wah Najma, tumne to hamara kaam aur bhi asaam kardiya, thought Dilshad happily.

Hearing this both Zoya and Asad choked on their food and started coughing. Zoya was horrified. A whole day!? With HIM!? While Asad was amused and giddy. I can get her to at least talk to me civilly, maybe? he hoped silently.

"Phoopi lekin aapko sightseeing nahi karni? Aap bhi yahan pehli baar aaye ho. Aap bhi chalo na," she pleaded.

"Nahin Zoya. Mujhe in sab cheezon mein interest nahin hai. Tum Asad ko leke jao, woh architect hai. Usse buildings aur woh sab dekhne mein mazaa aayega." Sorry Zoya, lekin yeh tumhari bhalay ke liye kar rahi hoon.

Zoya looked at Najma for help. "Tamatar, tumhe sightseeing nahin karni hai? Mujhe tumhe itni sari places dikhani thi." Please Najma, tum to mujhe mat choro.

"Zoya hum kal nahi jaa sakh the hain? Mujhe shopping karni ki bohot dil hai," retorted Najma.

"To mein bhi tum logon ke saath shopping pe chalti hoon!" Zoya was panicking. She didn't want to spend a whole day with him. She'd end up committing a murder. Either his, or hers.

"Zoya tum to abhi abhi India se aayi ho, to tumhe konsi shopping karni ki zaroorat hai? Dilshad aur Najma ko kuch cheezein leni hai, jaise ki toiletries and what not. Tumhare paas to yeh sab already hai. Hai na?" said Zeenat, enjoying a squirming Zoya.

Asad chuckled. She had tried so hard to get out of spending a day with him. But alas, everyone seemed to be hearing his silent pleas. And she was stuck with him. He looked her way and smirked at her. But his smirk disappeared within seconds, seeing her seething in anger towards him. Chaliye, Ms. Farooqui. Gussa kije. Jitna gussa karna kije. I deserve it. And I won't stop you. Because the sooner you vent out all your anger towards, me the sooner you'll see and understand what I am really doing here.

So? How was it? Please comment! The more comments I see the more I'll be motivated to update as early as possible :)
