"Allah miyan, even Asad's boss must have gone to sleep by now," Zoya grumbled, as she looked at the clock. It was 11:00 pm. Asad had promised to be back by 10: 30. She was not going to forgive him. First, she would make him do pushups. Then she would have him agree to take her to the cinema. Asad had finally gotten over his hatred of jeans, but to get him to see those 'obscene Bollywood movies with their shameful item numbers' was another challenge altogether. Well now, it was time for him to give this New Yorker some desi tadka.
She sighed as she flipped through the latest edition of Cosmo. She was about to e-mail her Jiju and Aapi and complain to them about her husband's lack of punctuality, when she heard the glass breaking.
She went absolutely still. This had happened before. Except that why the heck would Ayaan want to break in if Asad wasn't there. Maybe Asad made him a false promise too. God, he really needs to learn time management! She smiled to herself. Why trouble Jiju and Aapi when she could just grumble to her brother-in-law?
"Ayaan bhaijaan?" she called out. "Is that you?" There was no answer. Zoya shivered. If it had been Ayaan, he would have definitely responded.
The house was empty. Phoophi-Zoya still called her that, despite having been married for two months-had gone out of town to attend a friend's wedding. Najma had gone for a college camp. Zoya giggled to herself, thinking of how she had had to plead to Asad for days to stop being paranoid and let Najma enjoy her last year of studies. It was only when she had denied him bedroom privileges, that he had finally agreed.
Asad. May Allah have mercy on her! What was wrong with that man? If only he'd come on time, then she wouldn't be stuck in this situation.
She went over to the drawer and took out the pepper spray she kept handy for such situations. She remembered how before marriage she'd boasted to Asad that she was an expert at karate. She wished she'd let him woo her as a damsel in distress. At least he wouldn't have thought of ever coming home late!
"L-listen, whoever you are-I have pepper spray okay?" she shouted out. Once again nobody answered. She went down the stairs, simultaneously dialing Asad on her cell phone. "Sorry, but the number you're dialing is not responding."
What the hell? Asad always picked up the phone. What if he's having an affair with the secretary? That's why he ignores my calls, and comes home late at night. She felt a burst of anger on thinking of some slim vixen wrapped around him while she was busy fending off intruders in the house! How dare he!
Fueled by the thought of her husband's late night shenanigans, Zoya charged into the living room, her eyes scanning the darkness. When she thought she detected a flash in the kitchen, she immediately dashed in there. That was definitely a very expensive watch she'd just seen. Who was it? Could it be one of Asad's corporate rivals? So apart from an affair with the secretary, he was also playing office politics. This was just great.
Zoya gasped as an arm wrapped around her waist. "What did you think?" a silky voice purred into her ear. "That you could settle down here, in some city in the hinterlands of India, and we wouldn't find you? You're greatly mistaken Agent Zoya."
Zoya sniffed. Rather than feeling frightened, she felt intrigued. This man smelt a lot like Asad. Except the voice was definitely not very Asad-y. Asad always talked in a calm no-nonsense manner. Even in the bedroom, his instructions to her were slightly robotic.
She could feel the cold barrel of a gun pointing to her temple. "One move. And you're finished." She opened her mouth to protest when the stranger hauled her over the shoulder and carried her upstairs. Zoya would have expected to feel terrorized at this point, but she felt oddly comforted. This man's arms were just like Asad's when he carried her upstairs after she'd fallen asleep watching TV.
She was tossed onto to the bed, facing the pillows, so that she could not see the stranger's face. "Reveal your secrets Agent Zoya. Or else I will have no choice but to-
Zoya immediately clicked back to life. This man was not Asad! Asad was flirting with the secretary! Well, she would deal with both of them. She immediately wriggled out of his grasp and slammed him down so that she was the one on top.
"Hiyaaa!!" she screamed.
"Zoyaaa! What are you doing?" the man screamed. It was then that Zoya realized that the stranger was Asad.
"Asad, what the hell?" she demanded. "What is this?"
"I was just roleplaying, like you asked me to," he said meekly.
"What?" she yelled. Asad shut his ears. "Oh god, Zoya, you're the one who keeps saying we should try new things or we'll get bored."
"Oh," she said sarcastically, "So you think that by doing this, you're going to get me to forgive you? You're half an hour late Mr. Asad Ahmed Khan! Are you really bored of me? You're flirting with the secretary aren't you?" She started tearing up.
"Zoya, my secretary is fifty years old and has a grandkid. I'm nice to her, but I don't flirt," Asad said irritably.
"I don't care," she pouted. "You're late."
Asad sighed and clutched his ears. "Forgive me, meri jaan. What should I do to make it up to you?"
Zoya thought for a while, then smiled. She knew exactly what to do.

Asad tried not to yawn as he waited for Zoya to come out of the bathroom. What was taking her so much time? I guess this is your punishment, he thought, to go to sleep waiting for her to come.
Finally, the door opened. Asad's heart jumped up into his mouth. Zoya had fashioned a rope out of the bedsheet and had an unusually wide smirk on her face.
"I read this in Cosmo. It's supposed to be really good," she'd told him.
"Tying me to the bed and whispering dirty words? It's punishment, not love. I will not submit to such weird experiments," he'd said disgustedly.
Asad gulped. He was never coming home late again.
"So Agent Asad? Thought you could fool me so easily? Nah. You'd better start revealing all the state secrets- fast."
She cracked the rope on the floor. Inspite of himself, Asad smiled.
"Let's start with Mission Six-Pack..."
