That is a problem faced world over. Even in the U.S. and other Western cultures, despite people agreeing that one's skin color doesn't matter, inwards it does matter to many. My sister works at a beauty supply store and she says how many African American women buy a lot of skin whitening products. Even they feel self conscious. And with the desi crowd, people are obsessed with fair skin. My cousin has dark skin and her Mom and grandmother always lament that she has dark skin even though they have similar skin tones to her as well. Her Grandmother always victimizes herself by claiming how she's not considered good looking because she (I'm talking about the grandma) doesn't have fair skin. And then goes , "Look at your grandmother with fair skin. She' so beautiful compared to me." It gets annoying hearing her say this over and over again.
