He held it together only for his daughters. But inside he was losing it. They cried for their mummy and he didn't know what to say anymore. He was just going through the motions at work. He was so good at his job that he was able to do it automatically. He jumped every time a phone rang or there was a knock on the door. Where could she be? Was she ok? Was she even alive? Bu he knew if she had been ok that she would never just stay away from the girls. Not even if she hated him. He hadn't slept since she left. He would often work right through the night, just to keep his brain occupied. He hardly ate.
Ishita was in her element. She had gotten rid of Madam Nanny. Yash was disturbed by this but he would get over it. She made sure that she was around all the time. She pretended to a good little wife and mother. Those children were working on her last nerve though. The constant crying and nagging for the servant girl was getting out of control. She had to do something about it, but she didn't know what. She had bought them toys and sweets, to no avail. They would definitely be going to boarding school once she was in charge here.
It was exactly weeks later to the day that Aarti walked back into the house. The girls were at school but Yash had taken to working from home for precisely such a moment. He was working in his office when Ramdulare came to tell him that Aarti was back. He ran out and saw that she was sitting in the bed in her bedroom.
"Where the hell have you been! Do you know how worried I was? Do you know how much the girls been crying for you? Are you that inconsiderate" his crazy fear of losing her manifested as anger.
"I'm sorry. It was not my intention to make the girls sad." She said softly.
For the first time he saw how thin and pale she was.
"Aarti, are you ok. You don't look ok."
"I'm fine now."
"Where were you?"
"At the orphanage."
That night she had run out of there it was pouring with rain. She ran for miles and miles, till she found herself at the orphanage. But the gates were already locked. She sat down outside the gates, crying till she eventually passed out from exhaustion and pain. Mental and physical pain. That was how they found her in the morning. Shoba ma had the doctor come. Aarti's body seemed to have no resistance. She developed pneumonia and was admitted to hospital. She was released just the day before and her first thought was for her girls. When Shoba ma told her how long she had been in hospital she decided to go back immediately as she only had 2 weeks left with them.
"I will explain to Payal and Palak why I have been away and I will also start preparing them for when I leave in 2 weeks. No severance pay needed. I will be fine. I don't need any money from you that I didn't work for. I haven't spent much money since I have been living here so I can live off that till I find another job."
"Aarti, about what I said..."
"Sir, I would like to rest before the girls get home. I am recovering from pneumonia and I am still a bit weak, but don't worry I will still be able to do what you are paying me for."
He could see that she was weak. He left the room and he heard her coughing.
He felt like a complete a-hole. He was the cause of this. She ran out in the rain. That is probably why she caught pneumonia. He had not even realised that it would only be 2 more weeks till the wedding. 2 weeks till she would leave his life forever. He went to his bedroom and looked at the pictures of Arpita that still hung on his wall. He was so confused. He loved Arpita so much. He gave her everything and when she died, there was nothing left. And he promised her that he would never love anyone else. For the first time he questioned that promise. Would he have asked the same of her? If there was someone out there that could make her happy if he was gone, would he have begrudged her that?
"Arpita please give me a sign. What should I do? I feel things for Aarti that I can't describe. Things that I am scared to put a name to. But I can't get her out of my mind and I can't face being without her. Am I being fare to you? Does my feelings for her betray my love for you? Please answer me."
He didn't expect an answer. But he wanted one. He wanted the right one. But none was forthcoming and he remained under his obligation. The intensity of his internal struggle was getting the better of him.
When the girls came home she still slept and he wouldn't let them wake her. He had decided to get his own doctor to get a second opinion as well. They were so excited to see their mummy and couldn't wait for her to wake up. She woke up shortly before their bath time. When they saw her, they ran and jumped on her. The hugged her so tightly.
"Never leave us again Mummy" said Payal
"We missed you sooo much" said Palak
Aarti just gave a weak smile and said, "I missed you too angels." She could not stop the tears rolling down her cheeks. She already felt their loss even though she was still with them.
She wanted to bathe them but Yash's doctor was there and he wanted to her to rest anyway. The doctor confirmed that the medication was correct and that she was on her way to recovery but she needed lots of rest and needs to take her meds on time. He made her follow doctors' orders no matter how much she protested. It was so cute to see the girls trying to take care of her too. He wouldn't let her do anything. He made sure her food was brought to her on time and that she took her meds. She was getting some colour back in her cheeks. She was back and he could finally sleep. He was so tired.
His mother called to make final arrangements for the wedding. He had to make a decision.
"Ma, it's too soon. We need to postpone. I can't get married in a week."
"Yash, please we can't change the plans now. It's too late."
"Ma. We either postpone or call it off. You decide."
"Yash, are the rumours true. Is there something between you and that orphan girl?"
"Her name is Aarti. No there is nothing between us but I am not sure that I don't want there to be."
"Yash, she is not of our status. We will never accept her as a bahu."
"Ma, I didn't say anything about marriage. I am not sure what is happening myself but I think I owe it to myself and my daughters to explore what I am feeling."
"What will we tell Ishita's family?"
"The truth. I will speak to them. Don't worry about it."
Shortly after his discussion with his parents Aarti also approached him.
"Sir. We should start preparing the kids for my leaving. I would've started before but I didn't have the energy."
"The wedding has been postponed. "
"How long?"
"Indefinitely"
"Then I suggest you find a new nanny because I am still leaving"
He did not expect that.
"Why?"
"Because I need to get away from you. I can't do this anymore. I can't live with you. Not even for my girls." She had no more pride left. She needed him to know how she felt.
"Aarti, please don't leave."
"Why should I stay? You have said it before I am just the nanny. I can be replaced."
"No Aarti. You can't be replaced in Payal and Palak's hearts."
"Then you bring them to visit me when I go."
"No, you are not going anywhere. I won't let you go"
He moved to her in quick strides and kissed her. She closed her eyes and felt the kiss to the very core of her being. She responded. Tears flowing down her cheeks. She knew that it would be their last. She wanted to savour it. She would have done anything that he wanted just to be close to him right now. She wished that she did not have to let him go but he was destroying her. She loved him so much, but she could not endure the pain anymore. She would not be any use to the girls like this. Every day was a battle. To be so close to him and not to have him. To know that he thought that she either easy or a gold digger. And he still loved Arpita. Not her. She needed to get away from him soon.
When he finally removed his lips from hers. She stood on her tippy toes and held him tight. Her head on his shoulder.
"I love you" She said.
"I know" he knew for a while now. Those eyes could not hide anything.
"And you still love and are loyal to Arpita."
He didn't answer. He didn't have to.
"I love you so much but I will not share you. Especially with the ghost of your past. It's too painful. If you have any feelings for me at all Yash, I beg you, please let me go."
"What if I can't?" he was crying too now.
"If you ask me to stay, I will. But then you will have two ghosts in your life because this is killing me."
"Where will you go?"
"I don't know but I will be ok."
It wasn't easy to prepare the girls for her departure. She extended it for a week and Yash suddenly discovered he had a business trip. It was easier that way. Yash's mother would come and be with the girls till he found a suitable nanny. She walked out of the house when eventually Payal and Palak's hold on her were physically removed. Their heart wrenching cries for her followed her out the door. So many tears shed by all of them. So much heart ache. Aarti left the house but her heart stayed behind.
shame, please be gentle with Aarti. She was not in an emotional state to be a good mother to the girls and she also had the girls best interest at heart when she left. Or so she thought.Originally posted by: annirogc

Part 7
His mother has finally found someone that would look after the children. She was a very good nanny but she wasn't their Aarti-mummy. They missed her terribly. After they spoke with her over the phone they would normally act up and took a while for them to settle down. It was very difficult for him to see them like this. He was suffering too. He desperately wanted her back but he knew that it would mean that he was disloyal to Arpita. He knew he was the only one who could make the girls happy, he knew what would bring her back but he was not able to let go of Arptita yet. If he his love for her could die, then what would that say about the love he had for her. What would it say about his integrity if he could not stay loyal to her?
The kids seemed a bit happier here in Bhopal. They were with their family and they did not miss their mummy so much. But the holiday was only for 2 weeks and then it was back to the real world. Yash was dreading that day. They still asked him to bring her back even after 6 months. He had gone to Ishita to explain his situation and he finally saw the part of her that Aarti warned him about. She was upset and understandably so, but the things she said especially about his daughters and Aarti was unacceptable. She had called Aarti all kinds of disgusting names and called his girls drama queens and spoilt brats. She had even threatened him. Her actions made him realise that he dodged a great bullet there.
He was sitting in the garden watching the girls play when he was joined by Vidhi, his sister in law.
"Yash, you are really not looking after yourself. You are home now and we can see that are eating and getting enough rest but when you are in Mumbai, you neglect yourself."
"I will survive Bhabi."
"That is the problem Yash. You are surviving. When are you going to start living again? You're a handsome and successful young man, you have the world at your feet but you the saddest eyes that I have ever seen. When are you going to stop grieving for Arpita and move on with your life."
She waited for an answer but none was forthcoming.
"I hear the girls talk a lot about their Aarti-mummy. She must be a very nice person. She seemed to have really loved them and the feeling appears to be mutual."
"She is more than just nice Bhabi. She is kind, and caring. She is beautiful and talented. She has the biggest heart of anyone I have ever met. She seems so meek and demure but she has guts, even enough guts to stand up against me. She loves those girls like they were her own and would do anything for them. And they love her too. It broke their hearts when she left."
For the first time since Arpita's death Vidhi saw a hint of life in Yash's eyes. The way he spoke of this girl brought a smile to his lips, even to his eyes. He loved her, it was so obvious.
"And yours?"
"My what?"
"Did it break your heart when she left too?"
"Bhabhi, my loyalty is to Arpita."
"Yash, this misplaced loyalty for a dead woman has gone on long enough. I cannot stand by any longer and watch you ruin your life. This family tip toes around the subject, scared of your re-action. Today I will have my say and you will listen. Arpita was a normal human being. She was not a saint. You are romanticizing a version of the woman that you wanted her to be, but she never really was. She had flaws, Yash but you chose to overlook them because you were so besotted with her She did not love you half as much as you loved her. I am not saying that she did not love you at all but you made it so easy for her to use you. You carried the relationship. Everything came from your side. You treated her like a queen and she just accepted it. When the children were born, you were their primary caregiver, not her. You took time out of your working day to take them to school and bring them home. You bathed them, read them stories and put them to bed at night, never her. All she ever did was go out with her friends and spend your money. Where was she coming from when she had the accident Yash? Another night of partying with her socialite friends. Friends she never would have had if her last name was not Scindiya. What kind of person would ask the person that they were supposed to love to remain faithful to them even in death? I'll tell you what kind of person. A selfish one. She is not the woman that you have built up an image of. She had no substance. And now you have fallen in love again and you are prepared to give up your love and happiness, and even your daughter's happiness for that selfish woman. Wake up and smell the coffee Yash. You have a chance at happiness. Don't blow it."
He was shocked at Vihdi's outburst. She was always the soft quiet one that kept the peace in the family and now she was shouting at him.
"How does Aarti feel about you?"
"She loves me but she would not stay with me because of my loyalty to Arpita."
"I don't blame her. Yash, go get Aarti, make her your wife and give your daughters their mummy back. You owe it to them, to Aarti and yourself. I am sorry if I have upset you and I won't speak about this to you again. I just hope and pray that you will make the right decision."
Yash watched her walk away. Her words still echoing in his mind. He heard the sound of the children's laughter as Palak, Payal, Vendant and Vedikha were playing with their Chachi. Was it true what Vidhi said? He had sometimes wondered about the promise that Arpita had him make but the other things that Vidhi said was so harsh. Was he really so blinded by his love for her that he could not see any of her flaws? He sat there and thought of all the moments that she was too tired to put the kids to bed but was never too tired to go out with her friends. She could never get up to get the kids ready for school but if she had a breakfast date with her friends, she could get up at the crack of dawn to make herself pretty. Sometimes he had asked her to collect the kids at pre-school but she would always have an excuse and he would have to ask his mother or Vidhi as he did not want to leave the children in the care of the driver as they were still so small. The wind was completely out of his sails. He was a brilliant business man, an analytical thinker and yet he was unable to see the true Arpita. She was not even half the person that Aarti was. He had let her go for a dream. For a something that never was. Yash was devastated. His perfect life with Arpita had only been a illusion.
Yash's eyes had finally opened. Now that he could face the truth about Arpita, he was free to accept his feelings for Aarti. He loved her. He was hopeless and madly, irrevocably in love with her. She meant everything to him and he wanted her back. He had to get her back. He had to make his parents understand that he was going to marry her. No matter what the difference in their status was, she would be his wife. But first he wanted to hear her voice. He was not sure that she would speak to him, but he would call her anyway. He was so excited, so happy. He had not felt this way since... In fact he had never ever felt this way. He walked briskly into the house to get to his phone which he had left in his room.
"Hello." It was a strange woman's voice.
"Please can I speak to Aarti."
"Sorry, she can't come to the phone right now."
"Please, it is quite urgent."
"She is busy with her engagement rituals. But if you leave your name, I will tell her you called."
"Aarti Sharma?"
"Yes, sir. Who shall I say called?
His hand that held the phone dropped slowly from where it was held at his ear. He vaguely heard someone say "Hello, hello" on the other side. They must have eventually disconnected the call. It felt as if his heart stopped. She was getting engaged. How could she be getting engaged? She said she loved him. Did he really expect that she must wait for him when he made it clear to her that he would never be over Arpita? Once again he had missed out on happiness, on his love and he only had himself to blame. He went to lie down on his bed as the pain engulfed him. He could not commit to her when she wanted him too and now he had lost her.
