Part Nine
"If he decides he wants to be with you, I will back off," Arpita continued.
Aarti pondered for a while and then replied, "Alright."
Arpita was quite pleased with the outcome, now she can concentrate on winning back Yash's love. He will forget a person name Aarti ever existed in his life. On the hand, Aarti thinking was not on a different wavelength, she figured at least she will know for sure and not be left in a lurch like this. Both of them headed home. Aarti updated Aman on the phone about this latest development, he assured her whatever decision she takes he will always support her.
Arpita walked into the house and saw Gayatri, Buaji in deep conversation with a pandit. It occurred to her that they must be discussing Prateik's wedding date. On seeing Arpita, Gayatri remembered one important matter and immediately asked the pandit, "Oh! I forgot I gave you Yash and Arpita's kundali, did you do what I asked to do?"
"Hain.. Hain'please tell her, she is getting impatient she wants to know when she will get a grandchild," Buaji laughingly told the pandit.
"Gayatriji... I'm unsure how to tell you this, it seems their marriage is short lived. At first I thought I made a mistake and then I rechecked and still I got the same results."
Gayatri and Buaji looked at each other puzzled.
Arpita was in her room contemplating on her next course of action to bring Yash closer to her. She decided to plan a romantic dinner and quickly set out to make the necessary arrangements. She wanted the day to be special and waited with bated breath for evening to come. Yash and Arpita went to the restaurant separately. Arpita was over enthusiastic and somehow compensated the lack of it on Yash's part. Yash mind wandered elsewhere, often times he had to be brought out of his reverie by Arpita's constant, "Yash... are you listening," and he would answer her back, "Yeah.., yeah."
His mind drifted to Aarti, "Oh! God, never in my wildest dream I thought I could miss someone as much as this," he lamented to himself. He wandered if he could go one much longer like this. Yash became more restless and avoided to meet Arpita's gaze. The demeanour of Yash finally got to Arpita who noticed him nibbling at the food and not the least interested. With Yash showing lack of interest she scrapped all the other plans she made after dinner and they headed straight back home. Yash was more than relieved. He was tired of pretending.
In the car, Arpita first commented, "Yash.. why are you so cold towards me? In fact you are acting like this since I came back."
Yash was silent and Arpita grew more agitated, "it is because of that woman, isn't it."
That was the last straw, Yash pulled over his car at the side road. He finally opened his mouth and said, "that woman is the same person whose husband to be you killed and who you asked me to marry and that woman'.. . He hesitated, took a deep breath and continued, "That woman happens to be the woman I love."
Arpita felt her world came crashing down on her. "Yash, you are lying you love me not her."
"No Arpita I don't love you, I never had. You manipulated everyone in my family and yours too into believing we had some kind of relationship. The only relationship we ever had was friendship. I didn't want to cause embarrassment to you and your family so I continued with the charade. Before I knew I was sucked into marriage. Still I respected the relationship we have."
Arpita couldn't hold back her tears and started crying. Yash tried to pacify her but she pushed his hand away. When she felt much better she said, "Yash, we'll let go the past and start fresh, you can learn to love me."
Yash continued driving. Yash was angry with himself and with Arpita, she always knew how to get to him and make him weak. When they reached the house, Arpita turned to Yash, he didn't turn off the engine and he had a confused look on his face.
"Yash, you are not coming in, are you going somewhere?" Arpita curiously asked.
"Arpita, it's now or never, I have to make a decision. I have struggled in vain I don't want to hide my feelings anymore, I..I... want Aarti in my life. I cannot do without her, I'm going to bring her back."
Yash felt so relieved as if a burden has been lifted from his shoulders. Arpita got down and walked slowly towards the house. She didn't want to believe him, when she heard him drive away, she closed her eyes and then ran until she reached their room. She slumped herself onto the bed, her eyes caught the photo frame of their wedding. In her anger she took the frame threw at the mirror of her dressing table. The glass shattered into pieces, some of them failing on the ground. She stared blankly at the broken pieces of glass, later got up and squatted on the floor.
Prateik who heard some noises from Yash's room came to door and called out. When no one answered he turned the knob, found it unlocked and pushed the door open. He was shocked to see Arpita in a daze holding a piece of glass to her wrist. He rushed to her and took away slowly the glass piece from her. Prateik pulled her to the living room, sat her down and called Yash. Yash was caught off guard, he couldn't comprehend that Arpita would do something this extreme, he was wary and returned home.
One look at Arpita's dishevelled condition, he was guilt ridden. He blamed himself for her state. "Yash, please don't leave me," Arpita hugged Yash and said. He rubbed his hand on her back to calm her down.
---------------------------------------------
One night Aarti had a bad dream about Yash, it was more like a premonition. As days passed by her anxiety increased. She couldn't call Yash because of her promise to Arpita. Then one day she received a call from Prateik.
"Bhabhi... I had wanted to call you earlier but Yash bhaiya told me not to, he didn't want to unnecessarily worry you. Still I think I have to tell you," Prateik told her on the phone. Aarti's heart was beating fast, she held onto a chair.
"Bhaiya had an accident a few days ago at a construction site, a piece of brick hit his arm fracturing it. He is recovering now and under bed rest at home," Prateik relayed the piece of news.
Aarti thanked him. She told Shobhama this news and she in turn advised Aarti to go and check on him. Aarti was in two minds whether or not to go, how would everyone react to her presence? , the thought kept playing in her mind.
